Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

As a non veg Hindu. It doesn't bother me if the chicken or lamb I eat is halal. All this talk about animal cruelty, do you think the meat on your plate wanted to die.

When I was in primary the Muslim kids would also say halal meat tasted nicer.

OP, you are spreading lies and misinformation

There are 178 Five Guys branches in the UK.

Only three of them are fully halal (B'ham Fort, London Park Royal and M'ter Arndale).

A further 20 serve halal beef but also serve pork.

Why have you twisted this into 'Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal' and what is your agenda?

Can’t say you weren’t warned (not you specifically, but anyone who spoke out was called racist).

This is it 🤷‍♀️

Maybe do your own research before spouting off.

Why are you bothered and concerned on a personal level?

Perhaps because it is a cruel and disgusting practice and shouldn't be allowed in this country.

LeaderBee · 29/09/2025 15:07

Think of it this way.

If you were going to be killed would you prefer to be conscious during the process or not?

Id probably prefer not to die tbh.

cheeseforever · 29/09/2025 15:11

If you eat meat served in a restaurant, it is likely to a lower ethical standard than you prefer anyway. It probably isn’t free range or organic. It was unlikely to have been raised on a UK farm. My cousin is a butcher selling to trade and restaurants buy what is profitable. If customers buy chicken they sell chicken. If customers insist on free range (as happened with eggs) then that’s what the market demands.
The daily mail has made out that halal slaughter is about lack of stunning but that’s not really true - actually some of the locally owned British free range farmers I know who do their own slaughter where permitted don’t do stunning. I have watched a poultry farmer teach my husband how to kill a bird (one of my own pets, who needed to be put down) and there was no stunning involved, but it was respectful. He does not stun his animals prior to slaughter. It’s used in industrial processing.
if you want to eat meat, your local butcher or farm shop can help you find your local farmers who are more invested in welfare and not industrial processes.

I don't think the carrots and cabbages are ritually slaughtered without stunning, left to bleed to death whilst being prayed over.....

Edited

I hope you realise that slaughterhouse stunning fails quite often. Just a quick Google search shows plenty of evidence that stunning has a surprisingly high failure rate.
All animal slaughter is brutal.
As an aside though, why do people always condemn halal slaughter, but give kosher meat a few pass when they are very similar practices?

earphoneson · 29/09/2025 15:09

What is halal meat @SouthernFashionista?

Halal meat is meat that is slaughtered while fully conscious, usually by bloodletting.
Non-halal meat is generally stunned by either electrocution, or a captive bolt gun before death occurs.

88% of halal meat is pre-stunned.

I bet you don't check that when you were tucking in to your curry at a halal Indian.

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

“All the meat in the country”

Holy Hyperbole batman.

Not at all. Plenty of institutions serve halal only and do not notify people of this before buying. Many universities do. It’s appalling.

ChainStress · 29/09/2025 15:15

Europe is becoming more Islamic. In Brussels 50% of school children are Muslim. Other European capitals including London are catching up. As this happens society will change to reflect this demographic. Halal meat, women’s inclusion (including wearing hijab), LGBT+ rights.

Im sure everyone can make their own value judgements about the type of society we want to live in. Just be aware of how these changes will affect you and your children, grandchildren etc

I don't eat meat. I prefer not to eat dead animals.

GCITC · 29/09/2025 15:17

Most halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter. Unlike kosher meat, which never gets mentioned.

I don't care whether my meat has been prayed over or not. I do care whether the animal has been stunned before slaughter. That is what should be on the packaging.

Well I’ll mention it now and say I’m against that too.

VioletandDill · 29/09/2025 15:18

First of all, where are you seeing this? I can't find this information anywhere. Like PP said, there are 3 fully halal-certified UK stores, a dozen or so where halal meat is an option, and the rest is not halal. So, it seems your claim is bullshit.

Secondly, the majority of halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter. The only thing that separates it is a prayer, usually played on a loop on a speaker.

Thirdly, if you eat meat in the UK that is not only free-range from a tiny farm shop which allows you to see the animals skipping about in the field, you don't have a leg to stand on. Slaughter for meat and the conditions of many farms in this country and the countries we import them in is barbaric.

AudHvamm · 29/09/2025 15:18

I assume all the people hugely concerned about animal welfare at the moment of death only ever eat higher-welfare meat?

Either you care about how livestock is treated throughout its entire life or you're using the method of slaughter as a foil for other fears.

OneDearWasp · 29/09/2025 15:18

Posters have reminded us all, quite rightly, that meat is the muscle tissue of a slaughtered animal and maybe we shouldn't get too precious about how their lives end.

Also. Only a small proportion of Halal and Kosher meat is not pre-stunned so maybe any campaign or outrage should be around pre-stunning rather than Halal hysteria.

If profit making organisations are buying Halal certified meat it's a commercial decision not some sort of tinfoil hat conspiracy.

nomas · 29/09/2025 15:19

Daysofdreams · 29/09/2025 15:16

And you thought you'd crusade against halal meat when the larger is issue is the state of UK abattoirs? Sure.

tripleginandtonic · 29/09/2025 15:19

I've genuinely never looked to see if the meat I'm eating is Halal.

Naddd · 29/09/2025 15:19

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 29/09/2025 15:02

They dont kill the carrots in a barbaric way. Halal slaughter should not be allowed in the UK, British Veterinary Society are against it.

But they don't mind other slaughter methods😂🤣
