Growing trend for halal meat

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Between 2001 and 2009, the Muslim population increased almost 10 times faster than the non-Muslim population. Islam is now the second most widely practiced religion in the UK. In 2017, Pew Research Centre projected the population of Muslims in the United Kingdom to grow to 6.56 million (12.7% of the population) by 2050 under a zero migration scenario, or to 13.48 million (17.2%) under a high migration scenario.

The above is not a value judgement, just facts. If the population continues to increase at this rate, why would halal meat not eventually end up the norm?

There is a fascinating book called The Forbidden Zone by Michel Lesy where he goes and interviews people who are surrounded by death on a day to day basis and how they deal with it.
As part of this he visits a huge American cattle slaughterhouse and a Shochet at a kosher slaughterhouse. It was very eye opening to me and there was a lot more suffering in the industrial slaughterhouse than the kosher one.
There has always been a strong undercurrent of Islamaphobia when it comes to Halal. As people have pointed out the majority of UK halal meat is stunned (just under 90 percent at last count) and only a few halal groups prohibit this.
In addition stunning is not an exact science. One study showed that for captive bolt stunning on cattle around 10% of accurately subbed cattle were not actually subbed and over 30% of inaccurately stunned cattle were not stunned prior to slaughter.
For people who refuse halal meat for cruelty reasons but will gladly buy meat from the supermarket, you really will struggle to prove you aren't just prejudiced against Islam.

I don't have a problem with halal. At the end of the day, then animal dies in both cases.

Especially if most of halal meat is pre-stunned anyway, there is literally nothing for people to complain about.

One thing that I mourn the loss of is pork sausages in chippies! Every place I've been to now do chicken and beef sausages. Well where I live /lived down South anyway! I do miss a pork savaloy!
