Taylor Swift engagement - puzzled

LouisaJG · 27/08/2025 17:45

I’m in my 30s and so unreasonable to be posting/caring about this on every level. BUT. I didn’t see a post. So…

AIBU to be puzzled that the man Taylor Swift has finally decided to settle down with is so different to the type she has seemed to date pretty consistently through her 20s and 30s up to then? She seemed so keen on soft, arty, mainly British boys - and now she’s gone for the direct opposite. Is it because her previous long relationship with a soft, arty British boy (Joe Alwyn) didn’t go the distance and so she decided she really needed to change her type if she wanted marriage and kids? Is it a fairly cynical marketing reaction to the current political situation in the States (no idea if TK is actually a Republican but he looks like someone who could appeal to Republicans, very much unlike Joe Alwyn)? Is it just a return to her American, country roots? What gives? I’m her age and I just can’t imagine my tastes changing as dramatically as that.

We used to like the same type of man, and now I feel like I don’t know her any more (I know, I know, I know) 🤣

I think she just fell in love. I’m happy for them both.

FunnyOrca · 27/08/2025 17:48

As a long time fan, I have to say it’s a real surprise!

Even if the footballer isn’t a republican a lot of his circle are and while she was dating Joe Alwyn, associating with people like that seemed a complete impossibility.

If she’s genuinely happy, I’m happy for her, but I would never trust him.

Osmosisfreight · 27/08/2025 17:48

I am by no means a Taylor Swift fan, tbh she irritates the life out of me, however I think you are analysing this far to much. She’s met someone, she loves them they got engaged thats literally it!

Didimum · 27/08/2025 17:50

I think it’s odd to scrutinise a celebrity’s choice so much. You don’t actually know anything about them, despite the media making it feel as though you do.

Yeah but my point is the falling seriously and long-term in love with someone who is the polar opposite of everyone you have dated in the past. That isn’t something I’ve experienced, and it’s not something I’ve witnessed often with friends, I can think of maybe one example max in my personal circle. It’s strange to me.

Kelce has always avoided politics so it's impossible to know what his views are. The owners of his club and most of the teammates are Republicans. But again, just because you work with Reps does not make you one.

CommissarySushi · 27/08/2025 17:55

I think the relationship is a publicity stunt. It seems like suspicious timing to release his American eagle line the next day.

ExitPursuedByBearGrylls · 27/08/2025 17:56

Apart from Joe Alwyn I don’t think the other Brits were really actual relationships but I get your point. Maybe that’s why it works? She’s done with the moping and non-committal and he’s all-in and happy to be in the spotlight with her.

Maybe that’s why it’s working because he is different to all her ex’s? I wish them well but engagement and marriage doesn’t mean it will last…

Stopandlook · 27/08/2025 17:58

Maybe she’s just ready to settle down? I sure dated some wrong uns for a while and then took a chance on my DH who was different -and it was the best decision I ever made

Obsessed with Tay’s music and v much hope it’s the real deal 😍

Succinctly put.

It's curious, isn't it?

One the one hand, she could have fallen for someone who's not her usual type.

On the other hand, maybe the woman who tells us she can show us lies and that romance isn't dead if you keep it just yours isn't showing us the truth.

Who knows?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 27/08/2025 18:01

His Wiki suggests that even if he’s a republican he’s a reasonably liberal one. He took the knee as part of the BLM movement back in 2017 and he’s quite philanthropic towards those who Trump supporters would be fairly disparaging about. He’s not the same as her previous boyfriends but I think she acknowledges that herself. As she’s says ‘you know how to ball, I know Aristotle’

Sowingbees · 27/08/2025 18:05

Or maybe the people before weren't her type, but a rebellion, the people she wanted to want.

I am not who I was in my 20's, in my 20s I dated people who I thought gave me the life I didn't have growing up.
But then I grew up, and realised their was no shame in my background and I married someone who was similar to my childhood.

Meggie2008 · 27/08/2025 18:07

My husband is completely different from all my previous boyfriends. All my boyfriends were musicians, usually guitarists, playing the whole tortured artist act where they don't work and don't drive and this band is going somewhere and we'll get our big break, really!! 😂

My husband has a career, a car, is a PC gamer geeky type, plays absolutely zero instruments, can't sing a note, and it's a breath of fresh air 😂

‘the people she wanted to want’ is a really interesting take, I hadn’t thought of that…

I'm definitely not over invested in this and definitely haven't wondered the exact same OP!!

I don't think it's a publicity stunt. I do wonder if it's a bit of a rebound after Joe (and also Matty).

I really hope they are happy together long term.

I also wonder if they will have babies.

As I say, definitely not over invested.

Sometimessmiling · 27/08/2025 18:13

Always had a type. Met my husband so not my type but I am still madly in love and grateful for him 32 years later........

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 27/08/2025 18:13

I had to Google the English and gym teacher thing because I didn't understand what she was on about. It will come as a clattering surprise when I say I'm not a Swiftie.

Do we have the faintest idea whether she wants 'marriage and kids'? I can't say it would be uppermost in my mind if I were bestriding the music world like a colossus.

"You swore that you loved me but where were the clues?
I died on the altar waiting for the proof"

DisappearingGirl · 27/08/2025 18:19

Then again she also sang

"All they keep askin' me
Is if I'm gonna be your bride
The only kind of girl they see
Is a one-night or a wife"

RuthandPen · 27/08/2025 18:22

DisappearingGirl · 27/08/2025 18:18

And literally all her lyrics are taken from her real life, are they? So this freakishly successful, rich, powerful woman whose entire life has involved one record-breaking feat after another is really like those tragic, wilting Mn figures glumly writing 'Two years in and no proposal' posts?

turkeyboots · 27/08/2025 18:27

She is engaged to a man who is also hugely famous and understands the associated lack of freedom in their incredibly well off lives. They'll have way more in common than with some musician who'll never reach her level of success.

autienotnaughty · 27/08/2025 18:28

She encouraged her fans not to vote trump so either a democrat or at the least not a trump fan.

I think she is amazing, a fantastic role model to her younger fans, dignified in the press, gives loads to charity, a feminist.

I hope he treats her well and she gets the happy ending she deserves (relationship wise)
