Taylor Swift engagement - puzzled

LouisaJG · 27/08/2025 17:45

I’m in my 30s and so unreasonable to be posting/caring about this on every level. BUT. I didn’t see a post. So…

AIBU to be puzzled that the man Taylor Swift has finally decided to settle down with is so different to the type she has seemed to date pretty consistently through her 20s and 30s up to then? She seemed so keen on soft, arty, mainly British boys - and now she’s gone for the direct opposite. Is it because her previous long relationship with a soft, arty British boy (Joe Alwyn) didn’t go the distance and so she decided she really needed to change her type if she wanted marriage and kids? Is it a fairly cynical marketing reaction to the current political situation in the States (no idea if TK is actually a Republican but he looks like someone who could appeal to Republicans, very much unlike Joe Alwyn)? Is it just a return to her American, country roots? What gives? I’m her age and I just can’t imagine my tastes changing as dramatically as that.

We used to like the same type of man, and now I feel like I don’t know her any more (I know, I know, I know) 🤣

She seems a very savy woman, who is incredibly successful and runs alot of her own business.
I imagine she has focused on herself, and what makes her happy, as well as setting good boundaries.
We all need to do the same rather than focusing on "types" or caring what other people think.
The answer to what makes you happy is always within you if you look hard enough.

ShesTheAlbatross · 29/08/2025 09:29

I agree.

Although she was a bridesmaid at Lena Dunham’s wedding, so I do think they were/are actual proper friends, rather than just scouting round for the nearest non-model she could find. “You are in Love” is about Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff.

That's almost worse given what a dick LD is!

But yeah, I'm not knocking her success, if anything, I'm just emphasising how comprehensive it is - she's navigated some good and bad PR to come out on top. But it's still PR.

She doesn’t need the publicity to
make her album a success. She has 282 million followers on Instagram. She could release an album of her singing nursery rhymes and it would sell massively.

Yep. She also announced her new album name on the 12th August, so 2 weeks before the engagement photos.

Publicity. They only have a short time in the public eye. Particularly him and AI can only write so many songs before anyone realises!

What the fuck? You do know Taylor has been around for about 20 odd years now and has been writing songs since she was a teen before AI was even a twinkle in a billionaire’s eye. Speaking of billionaires, she is one.

He’s also worth millions. Might only be 2/3% of Taylor’s worth but he’s not going to struggle for money in his lifetime.

You can be as bitchy as you like, doesn’t change the fact she’s gorgeous, talented and super rich.

I’m staggered that anyone could be so lacking in intelligence, they could accuse her of using AI. She’s hardly a recent addition to the pop world. Honestly 😂 Again, it’s always people who have not actually listened to her music- especially her lyrics- who make nasty comments about her song-writing ability.

I agree.

I can totally understand not liking her, and thinking her songwriting isn’t good. I mean, I love her, but it’s all subjective. But she is very clearly capable of writing songs without AI.

@LouisaJG LouisaJG...

Darling...your very first sentence says it all. Let's grow up and move on from fantasy talk about the starlets, shall we? We are much bigger than this low stoop you seem to have taken. Moving right along...

Honey… you’re on mumsnet clicking on threads about starlets. You also seem a bit confused about how tagging works. Maybe sort that out before you start lecturing anyone else?

She's not a "starlet" she has made it.

Also this. This thread generated 11 pages really fast. Because a lot of women are interested in a hugely successful female artist whose work and life reflect a lot of our own experiences and dilemmas back to us. Funny that.

'Settling'? What about a physically fit, physically attractive bloke who loves her and is a millionaire in his own right is 'settling'?

Settling for someone that’s not her usual type for the sake of marriage and babies.

I agree with all this.

And I like Taylor (I'm a fan) and believe that this relationship is genuine and they really love eachother. That said there will still be an element of manipulation of the press and well timed delivery to maximise the impact of any announcements etc. They will have a whole team around them timetabling everything I'm sure.

I think it is actually very difficult to have a genuine relationship when you are a billionaire starlet. Even loved ones can start to see you as a product - which is why their relationships often don’t last very long. It is actually very sad. I am reminded of Marilyn Monroe who said that men went to bed with Marilyn and woke up with Norma Jean.

I wish them both every happiness.

Agreed, and I think she knows this as well: “Cos all of my heroes died all alone. Help me hold on to you”

Lots of people suddenly using the word starlet. 🤔

I didn't marry my usual type and I wasn't settling. I upgraded. I actually think it's a sign of growth and maturity to recognise the qualities you truly want in a partner don't necessarily align with a 'type.'

I also think she looks extremely happy and in love and he seems to be making her very happy.

FrodoBiggins · 29/08/2025 23:35

LouisaJG · 27/08/2025 17:52

Yeah but my point is the falling seriously and long-term in love with someone who is the polar opposite of everyone you have dated in the past. That isn’t something I’ve experienced, and it’s not something I’ve witnessed often with friends, I can think of maybe one example max in my personal circle. It’s strange to me.

He might not be the polar opposite of her last boyfriend. They might be extremely similar. You don't know any of these people at all.

Yes I bet gorgeous young billionaire Taylor Swift would have really struggled to get a pasty indie boy to marry her

How is it settling when they are CLEARLY in love and really compliment each other? Everyone on this thread who watched the podcast agrees.

He's a multimillionaire. He's hot. He's tall. He's regarded as one of the best tight ends in the NFL. This isn't some loser.

I don't get what part of marrying the hot millionaire you're in love with is settling? Not that she needs the money, lol.

Are there any hot millionaires around who fancy settling with me?

"Who knows what happens to two people when they’re alone?"

(That's was a conversations with friends reference btw lest anyone accuse me of not knowing she used to go out with a skinny gorgeous famous man and now she goes out with a tonked gorgeous famous man)

SleepingStandingUp · 27/08/2025 18:41

What's the quote about madness being doing what you've always done but expecting the outcome to be different? She's dated similar types of guys, it's never gone the distance. So she's looked for someone different and it's worked.

She's engaged to someone who grew up in the same region - she's gone back to her roots in a way.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 30/08/2025 00:16

Clearly her usual type was working out. He seems like a great man for her.

Or is it a case of choosing someone whose points of reference and general values align with yours because you grew up in the same region...

Is it 'settling' to choose somebody who is right for you when all the others have been wrong?

I'd have been a fool to stick with the types I'd dated previously, as it would have meant I wouldn't have given DP a second look. The only shame is that I wasted my time with the dickheads previously.
