Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

If only it was a dream and we hadn't left Europe because people were hoodwinked into voting for Brexit by a bunch of liars.
As time goes on more people are in favour of being part of Europe especially the young ones who just missed being able to vote and are now being affected by leaving

MissyB1 · 19/05/2025 12:08

Sadly not true at all OP. But I suspect you knew that.

Gilead · 19/05/2025 12:08

The more I hear about Starmer the more I think he wants to destroy the UK and give the country away and does not want to govern it for the people who elected him (who wont be voting for labour in the future).
How is he giving the country away?
Did you vote Brexit? If you did, I blame you for the bloody mess we’re in.

BustingBaoBun · 19/05/2025 12:09

I have an expensive bottle of champagne put aside. I would open it now if I thought we were re-joining the EU. It was the stupidest most damaging vote ever, and I loathe David Cameron for going there.

Funnily enough, everyone I know who voted for it, now deny they ever did. Fuck off, I know you did because you were crowing about it the next morning! They either say they can't remember (yeah right!) or they voted to stay in (yeah right!). Biggest embarrassment ever for them!

By the way, I consider myself European so why would we have nothing to do with our nearest friends and neighbours? I love Europe and travel extensively throughout it.

In a last minute concession Starmer has surrended access to our fishing waters to the EU for 12 years. A huge win for the EU, a loss for Britain.

No it isn't.

It's to make trading easier and more cost effective , as Brexit rules made it difficult and unprofitable for British fishermen.

Try again.

Makes you wonder if someone has something on him he wants to hide and is blackmailing him..

He wants to destroy it by setting up trade deals which are beneficial?! Right-io

He has done more for the benefit of this country than the last government did in 10+ years in regards to international relations and trade deals. Being a lone island is not an option if we want to prosper again.

Blueflowerpower · 19/05/2025 11:35

Firstly, he isn't reversing Brexit - please inform yourself properly. And secondly, it would be a bloody good thing if he did. If the referendum were rerun remain would win just on the basis that so many who voted leave have died since the vote was held.

Along with many others who voted leave realising now what a shit show it was always destined to be and how those who were touting for it had no idea about how to achieve it, or even what it would mean 🤦‍♂️

MikeRafone · 19/05/2025 12:12

Any referendum, doesn’t have to be legally adhered to anyway - but it was. Even though the percentage wasn’t high enough either way to count as legally binding.

Agreed!
I find it very strange indeed that the UK population want things given to them and want to offer nothing in return? There is something almost arrogant about it!

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 19/05/2025 12:12

Exactly - how is that "destroying" the UK?! Confused
It's making it stronger, surely.

zenas · 19/05/2025 12:13

I doubt the EU would or could have UK back in the fold without a fresh application to join (re join). Another 10 -20 years of negotiation, votes by other members as to whether to agree or not, and less favourable conditions than were there before.

That's my take on it. But regenerating a good relationship with the EU via trade negotiations etc. is a good thing. Allying with Europe is a must now, given the state of things in the US and the tariff situation amongst others.

It's a positive start IMO.

BustingBaoBun · 19/05/2025 12:13

Yes but blue passports! How excited Brexiteers were for that!

I hate mine. And how ironic that we used to print them up until 2018 but De La Rue lost out and they are now printed in Poland.

You couldn't make it up!

UnderTheCover · 19/05/2025 12:13

If only ...

MoominUnderWater · 19/05/2025 12:13

I can’t even blame the people who voted for Brexit. People believe the lies, like the fucking bus and £30 million a week extra for the nhs. In any other area the ASA would have stepped in!!!!

I blame Cameron for his stupidity in not realising that people might vote for it and boris and co who whipped everyone up to vote for it just to bolster their own image/career.

thetrumanshow · 19/05/2025 12:14

LavenderBlue19 · 19/05/2025 11:29

No, he's not. HTH.

I bloody wish he would though.

could not sum it up better

Oioisavaloy27 · 19/05/2025 12:14

You Reform voters are getting tiresome, try and educate yourself properly before you start a false thread.

They were conned by Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson into believing that we could have our cake and eat it.

The more I hear about Starmer on this middle class Reform voting forum , the more I realise posters will talk more nonsense about him than they do about Meghan Markle.

If you think Starmer is a bad PM, God knows what you thought of the lazy, , self serving , corrupt Boris Johnson, the lunacy and incompetence of Liz Truss and the nastiness of Rishi Sunak.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 19/05/2025 12:15

I was Remain. I fucking hate Starmer. But at least blame him for something he's actually done. Severing our ties to Europe have resulted in rising prices, lost trade markets and business, rising prices... he is trying to fix some of the damage that has done. We have similar agreements with many countries. Because there is a world economy and severing ties with other countries is something only idiots do. The only people that Brexit has damaged is the UK, and if we want to stand alone we will quickly discover that we will fall alone too.

Indeed. And many others have learned the hard way what the impact of Brexit has been on them and their families.

YourSignalFadedIntoAnotherWorld · 19/05/2025 12:15

God I wish!

Oioisavaloy27 · 19/05/2025 12:15

Also many people know now that Brexit was built on lies, we have not gained but lost a lot from leaving. And this is why I can't understand why people are voting for Fartage.

They won a landslide at the GE. Not an unpopular govt. If people didn't want them they should have voted for someone else.

And it's not a reversal of Brexit by a long way. Sadly.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 19/05/2025 12:16

It's definitely a close run race, but I honestly think Meghan is winning it.

80smonster · 19/05/2025 12:16

Not much of a Starmer fan, but this is a very good thing.
