Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

Hmmm - I don't remember a referendum on whether we wanted to "have nothing to do with Europe?"

LavenderBlue19 · 19/05/2025 11:29

No, he's not. HTH.

I bloody wish he would though.

This.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/05/2025 11:54

Oh FFS. Would have thought those who fervently wanted to leave the EU would have learned their lessons by now and stopped just taking ridiculous, alarmist headlines as fact.

Do some actual reading, OP. Brexit is not being reversed.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/05/2025 11:55

If only.

kirinm · 19/05/2025 11:55

How embarrassing for you OP.

mysecretshame · 19/05/2025 11:56

Are we back in the EU now?

If not, then he hasn't reversed it.

Witchcraftandhokum · 19/05/2025 11:51

I can't tell if you're ignorant or goady, either way no, he's not.

And yet, we're told they knew what they were voting for

FruityCider · 19/05/2025 11:57

If he actually managed that I'd be throwing a street party and jumping with joy. That's not what's happening though. Brexit was and is nothing short of a disaster.

Dingalingalong · 19/05/2025 11:57

I wish!

ruffler45 · 19/05/2025 11:58

The more I hear about Starmer the more I think he wants to destroy the UK and give the country away and does not want to govern it for the people who elected him (who wont be voting for labour in the future).

Makes you wonder if someone has something on him he wants to hide and is blackmailing him..

The Brexit Referendum was a binary choice - in or out. There was no vote on what exactly Brexit would look like or any particular policies or agreements. The government has the normal responsibility and opportunities for negotiating deals, policies and agreements with other nations and supranational bodies. The current government was democratically elected on the basis of a manifesto which indicated a desire for a closer relationship with Europe than that pursued by the Tories. There is nothing unfair or undemocratic about what's happening now.

Very good summary.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/05/2025 11:59

I only wish that were true!

I’m not convinced they’re an unpopular govt - this started to be said way too soon after their election to be based on anything.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 19/05/2025 11:59

Are you deliberately seeking to spread disinformation, OP, or just not very clever?

I wish he would reverse Brexit, but sadly, he is not going to do anything of the sort.

Mumwithbaggage · 19/05/2025 12:01

Oh to wake up from a long sleep to find that Brexit, Boris, Trump and Truss were all a really bad dream.

MoominUnderWater · 19/05/2025 12:02

Don’t believe the daily mail headlines

SwedishEdith · 19/05/2025 12:02

The only question the referendum asked was whether to leave or remain in the EU. We left. Brexit was executed. Everything post that is not Brexit reversal but fixing the damage Brexit has caused to trade. But you know that.

I dunno, I might be more worried if I have dreamt up Boris and Trump!

Hyperbolic idiocy

MushMonster · 19/05/2025 12:03

LOL, ho and have an actual read of what they are actually agreeing to.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 19/05/2025 11:38

Withdrawing from membership of the EU is not the same as having nothing to do with Europe, the continent in which we are located. Don’t be so bloody ridiculous.

You literally said exactly what I came to say 👍

Exactly. Nobody thinks we’ve joined the United States because we have a trade deal with them.

theDudesmummy · 19/05/2025 12:05

What a stupid and opaque OP! Who said we should have "nothing to do with Europe" and when?

It was the democratic wish of some of the UK.

Been reading the DM headlines and getting yourself in a stew? which they like to get people doing
He's not "reversing Brexit" at all.

ExtraOnions · 19/05/2025 12:06

The Domestic Fishing Industry has already been decimated

Apart from anything else, Fishing equates to 0.04% of GDP - why would we build an economic policy on an Industry that brings so little to the table ?
