Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

Well, he’s clearly not. How much better all our lives would be if we could junk this stupid overblown political rhetoric all round.

Eyesopenwideawake · 19/05/2025 11:28

😂😂😂

LavenderBlue19 · 19/05/2025 11:29

No, he's not. HTH.

I bloody wish he would though.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/05/2025 11:29

Where on the brexit voting form did it say that the options were "Stay in the EU" and "Have nothing to do with Europe"?

Blueflowerpower · 19/05/2025 11:35

Firstly, he isn't reversing Brexit - please inform yourself properly. And secondly, it would be a bloody good thing if he did. If the referendum were rerun remain would win just on the basis that so many who voted leave have died since the vote was held.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/05/2025 11:37

He absolutely is not. There will be some tweaks to the trading relationship with our biggest trading partner.

I wish he would, or at least put it to the people again. He’s pretty spineless IMO.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 19/05/2025 11:38

Withdrawing from membership of the EU is not the same as having nothing to do with Europe, the continent in which we are located. Don’t be so bloody ridiculous.

midlandsmummy123 · 19/05/2025 11:39

Granted 12 years of access to UK fishing waters without even running it by the Scottish Government!

cantkeepawayforever · 19/05/2025 11:39

If you could tell me one really good, measurably positive outcome that was only possible because of Brexit, which he is reversing, then I might consider your point carefully.

As it is, I think he is pragmatically trying to mitigate some of the disadvantages that Brexit has inflicted on the country. Which seems to me exactly what an intelligent government - regardless of their moment by moment popularity but given their overall electoral mandate - should do.

SomewhereinSuberbia · 19/05/2025 11:41

In a last minute concession Starmer has surrended access to our fishing waters to the EU for 12 years. A huge win for the EU, a loss for Britain.

Toolatetoasknow · 19/05/2025 11:42

You couldn't be much more wrong, I am sorry to say. I am no Starmer fan, but if he had the courage to call for a referendum on the subject of rejoining the EU he would have my vote.

MatildaMovesMountains · 19/05/2025 11:43

🤡

Radiatorvalves · 19/05/2025 11:43

I’d be so happy if he was able to wave a magic wand and undo all the appalling damage of Brexit. But it doesn’t work like that. Rebuilding relationships that were damaged during that process and improving the lot of Britains is vital. Especially when you look at the shit show that’s going on across the pond…. We need to have reliable allies.

373849595d · 19/05/2025 11:44

The Brexit Referendum was a binary choice - in or out. There was no vote on what exactly Brexit would look like or any particular policies or agreements. The government has the normal responsibility and opportunities for negotiating deals, policies and agreements with other nations and supranational bodies. The current government was democratically elected on the basis of a manifesto which indicated a desire for a closer relationship with Europe than that pursued by the Tories. There is nothing unfair or undemocratic about what's happening now.

ShortColdandGrey · 19/05/2025 11:46

I wish he would. It was the stupidest thing to happen in the UK for a long time. Well apart from people in England voting in Reform. We do not need the poor mans Donald Trump having any more power.

nightmarepickle2025 · 19/05/2025 11:47

There are more yoga teachers in the UK than fishermen. Holding the whole of the UK economy hostage for them is silly. And fishermen will hugely benefit from getting rid of the extra customs checks that often mean they have to ditch vast quantities of their catch.

I don’t think this is quite correct- my understanding is that the current arrangements have been agreed to trains for 12 years rather than be renegotiated annually, so there are the same protections as now. EU wanted the rights in perpetuity but UK said no. There is no change to what is is place now and our rights remain protected

GasPanic · 19/05/2025 11:48

Well he's about to decimate the domestic fishing industry to the benefit of some other groups such as the agricultural sector as a whole.

Whether you believe this is moral or sensible really depends on your worldview. Some people would argue democracy is tyranny of the majority and what is in the entire countries best interests should prevail.

Others might point out the logical extension of this is that the cuts to the disabled PIP are therefore valid, because they are minority groups and the money should go to helping the majority not the minority and benefit a larger number of people instead.

For most people it seems like putting small specialist groups on the bonfire is fine. Right up to the point it's the small specialist group that they belong to that ends up getting toasted.

JHound · 19/05/2025 11:48

Anything is true when you lie.

MyPresumablyScrotum · 19/05/2025 11:48

In return the UK gets better trading deal for agricultural products (cheaper food in the long run?), more money into the defence fund, Streamlined Travel throughout Europe, but it’s only beneficial for Europe?

Agree.
And sadly I see reform getting the votes next GE...

Witchcraftandhokum · 19/05/2025 11:51

I can't tell if you're ignorant or goady, either way no, he's not.

MissCharlotteLutterell · 19/05/2025 11:51

Unfortunately not.

He is just responding to the reality that the Brexit set up by the Tories was appallingly bad in every possible way and trying to make some very tiny changes to make it fractionally less awful.

It's posts like this that lead to Brexit enthusiasts being labelled as thick and ignorant. Because you clearly don't even know what Brexit involved.

Bollocks.
