Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

No, he's not. HTH.

I bloody wish he would though.

Me too. The stupidest thing ever

CointreauQuaint · 19/05/2025 12:32

Lol. If only.

I can’t even blame the people who voted for Brexit. People believe the lies, like the fucking bus and £30 million a week extra for the nhs. In any other area the ASA would have stepped in!!!!

I blame Cameron for his stupidity in not realising that people might vote for it and boris and co who whipped everyone up to vote for it just to bolster their own image/career.

I blame all of them. They were not deceived at all. They were told what would happen, from increased immigration from outside the EU to us having to deal with our own burearocracy, to us losing our right to freedom of movement, to a huge increase in paperwork in order to export anything into the EU, to the huge loss of clout we would have when trying to negotiate trade deals with other non EU countries, to the loss of farming subsidies but they decided to ignore it all. They were lied to but they were also told the truth. They decided to ignore it.

We could only wish.

Unfortunately £trillions of damage has been irrevocably caused already, and reversing is impossible, we might rejoin, but it will be on worse terms.

WhoDatDen · 19/05/2025 12:34

Starmer's had enough. He wants Reform to take over and can't wait 4 years. This is now the start of his fast track procedures to get those keys to No. 10 into Nige's hands.

Couldyounot · 19/05/2025 12:35

Bit more choke and it'll start next time, OP

letsallchant · 19/05/2025 12:35

Absolute garbage. This is what to expect for the next four years from Nige. Meanwhile the grown ups are having to get on with it and build bridges as best they can. As for Brexit benefits, don't make me laugh.

MaggieBsBoat · 19/05/2025 12:36

I’m feeling deep schadenfreude for the OP. How embarrassing! 😳

countrygirl99 · 19/05/2025 12:36

BustingBaoBun · 19/05/2025 12:28

Why is it a plus?

It's a total minus with me because I travel a lot and I might well have to get a new passport before it runs out because I'm running out of pages

A lot of people like seeing the stamps in their passport and it's fairly unusual to run out of pages.

Whatafustercluck · 19/05/2025 12:36

He's very sensibly realising that the future health of our economy rests on having good relations with our European neighbours. He's negotiated with the US for a better trade deal on steel and cars to protect UK industries and he's now doing the same with Europe. 'Negotiation' doesn't mean having everything your own way, it means conceding on some issues, to gain in other areas.

I wish Brexit had never happened. I voted remain. I've been hoping for a government that would try to harness relationships with our closest allies in this way. If the government can improve the economy in the first instance, then their hands are less tied where domestic policies are concerned. Austerity has crippled the UK, people don't want more of the same, they want their lives to improve. The only way that will happen is by having a healthy and resilient economy.

People don't like Starmer. But I genuinely think he's a long term strategist who is currently taking the hit on some unpopular short term decisions whilst prioritising and pursuing a longer term approach which will get the UK moving in the right direction again. People expecting instant gratification and their lives to change overnight under a new government are naive to say the least.

I wish he was, and I wish he could. Brexshit was the stupidest act of self harm the UK has ever committed. The ludicrous 2016 referendum should never have been called.

He isn't though. He's just trying to make better sense of a ridiculous situation. Good luck to him. On this he has my support.

Stop embarrassing yourself and swallowing the Daily Fail headlines hook, line and sinker.

SomewhereinSuberbia · 19/05/2025 11:41

In a last minute concession Starmer has surrended access to our fishing waters to the EU for 12 years. A huge win for the EU, a loss for Britain.

Already handed over by Johnson in the first place.

Hedjwitch · 19/05/2025 12:38

midlandsmummy123 · 19/05/2025 11:39

Granted 12 years of access to UK fishing waters without even running it by the Scottish Government!

Independence voters gain a huge boost from that.

He isn't reversing Brexit; don't be so silly.

He is currently in talks to allow a greater level of cooperation with our allies and friends on the European mainland which, given the current state of the world - and especially of the US and Russia - is an entirely sensible move.

Agreed. Shame it's not possible. The statement in the OP is ridiculous by the way.

MoistVonL · 19/05/2025 12:42

Do you struggle with reading comprehension on all topics, OP, or just those relating to Europe?

MonoMono · 19/05/2025 12:43

countrygirl99 · 19/05/2025 12:36

A lot of people like seeing the stamps in their passport and it's fairly unusual to run out of pages.

I have never ever heard of this before.

But it would sum up the IQ of the average Brexiter.

Stamps in blue passports, plugs and bendy bananas...

Sahara123 · 19/05/2025 12:43

It’s when you read posts like OP’s you see how we ended up leaving , so many people didn’t understand what they were voting for. I remember seeing one woman quite upset as she didn’t realise that the referendum vote was actually binding.

Oh if only you were right and Brexit was but a feverish nightmare instead of solid reality.

Goditsmemargaret · 19/05/2025 12:45

ShortColdandGrey · 19/05/2025 11:46

I wish he would. It was the stupidest thing to happen in the UK for a long time. Well apart from people in England voting in Reform. We do not need the poor mans Donald Trump having any more power.

Let's be friends.

BertSymptom · 19/05/2025 12:45

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/05/2025 11:29

Where on the brexit voting form did it say that the options were "Stay in the EU" and "Have nothing to do with Europe"?

This.

And how poor has your understanding of the world got to be for you to think it would be a. possible and b. a good thing for the UK to have nothing to do with Europe.

Maddy70 · 19/05/2025 12:45

No he isn't. He's negotiated a trade deal with the EU , which was part of the Brexit promises that the Tories failed to deliver.
This will add billions each year to the British economy.

Gustavo77 · 19/05/2025 12:46

I really hope he does, it's been a predictable disaster
