To worry about America?

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:37

I used to love America and would holiday there every year. We have had some amazing road trips there over the years. We were due to go to New Orleans this year but I’ve cancelled, I no longer want to go.

They are completely alienating themselves from the rest of the world, talking about taking over other countries, turning on allies, suddenly best mates with Russia ….

I watched that awful woman speaking to the UK journalist this morning “we don’t give a crap about your opinion” - how rude and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on trump - greeting Zelenskyy with “I see you’ve dressed up for the occasion” !!! I’m no fan of Starmer but could you imagine him greeting a foreign leader like that?

Imagine Rachel Reeves screaming at a journalist that we don’t give a crap about their opinion?

What is wrong with America right now and will they ever recover from this administration?

Its awful I agree

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 27/03/2025 08:42

I don't understand what they're trying to do or where this new attitude has arisen from. Obviously there is some sort of Russian interference in their politics, but how have so many of them been so easily swayed?

I don't think their allies have given the US a reason to turn on them like this. I have friends over there and have had some good holidays there and think it's an amazing country. Even though I haven't agreed with 100% of the US's actions over the years, I've always admired their commitment to their allies and to values like free speech and they seem to be gleefully throwing it all out the window, and for what? It's distressing.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 27/03/2025 08:50

Sadly this is what happens when people who aren't as intelligent as they think they are get into power. The real eye opener isn't that they're off their bloody trolleys, it's that the checks and balances have fallen away so completely and so easily.

Absolutely.

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop…

I couldn’t care less about America - they voted (in very large numbers) for what they now have.
I AM worried about the impact of America’s shift on the rest of the world.

Been to America a few times. Don’t consider it a huge loss that it is no longer in my list of potential destinations for a trip.
Ive never ‘loved’ it though. In fact all my visits there were made with at least a partial reticence.

IsawwhatIsaw · 27/03/2025 08:56

Trump seems to want to emulate Putin , he and his team clearly have contempt for Europe.
I agree the checks and balances supposed to keep abuse of power in check seem to have disappeared.

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:57

Sounds awful but I really hope their behaviour backfires on them. Just to make the American people think twice about voting in another extremist idiot next time.

I mean Christ, trump makes Starmer look competent

Come on, very little has changed in reality. The mask has slipped is all.

They have NEVER 'given a crap' about anyone's opinion.

This bunch are appalling, but can you honestly say hand on heart that Cheney and Rumsfeld were better? Because I can't. I'd rather know who I'm dealing with, than have a load of diplomatic flannel for the cameras and then gloves off behind the scenes, which is what they've always done. So, in reality, nothing has changed.

In many ways, it's a good thing. The rest of the world can finally stop pretending they're anything other than the bully boys they've always been.

Hear, hear.

BagelandEggs · 27/03/2025 17:33

Also if you tried to go there they may not let you in if you have criticised the Trump administration on social media (not sure how they'd know!) ! I have heard of American citizens even being detained when they tried to enter the US after being away if they have taken issue with Trump publically. That is very scary.

Maitri108 · 27/03/2025 17:39

"we don’t give a crap about your opinion” sums up America's foreign policy and has done for years. You're just seeing them as others have seen them for decades.

i think im safe, they’d have to waterboard me for my login details and i still wouldn’t remember them!!

This is of a certain different order of magnitude. Congress is irrelevant and will rubber stamp anything. A ketaminefuelled de facto leader; taking Greenland and the Panama canal and making Canada the 51st state. Welsh backpackers being arrested and detained in chains. How is any of that normal ??!!

Umidontknow · 27/03/2025 18:54

Part of me is finding it hilarious, except its real and they are playing with people's lives. It will take a very long time for America to be respected again after this

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 27/03/2025 20:12

Martha, the journalist who shone through that awful interview has a podcast called Trump 100. This is the episode 'When Martha met Marjorie'

Fireflybaby · 28/03/2025 06:11

Well, it's happened in UK with Brexit... nobody believed there'll be enough "leave" voters, and so it happened.
Who knew who Farage was before that? Nobody! Just a yapping dog on a busy alley.
Now imagine him being voted for PM... yup! US take 2! But worse!.
Trump, Vance and Musk think they're the bees knees and The heroes of US. The saviours. Their feeling of grandeur is beyond imagination.
The fact that they think they cand and are entitled to taking over other countries such as Canada and Greenland is out of this world...

Meadowfinch · 28/03/2025 06:22

I think it will take years for the damage Trump and his flunkies are doing, to be undone.

Co-operations such as the five eyes, that have protected the safety of hundreds of millions of people for decades, are over. America is completely untrustworthy, totally lacking in professionalism or even basic competence, their administration is truly 'amateur hour'.

It will take decades for trust to be restored.

I know this is just a joke but, in all seriousness, you have to list your social media accounts on your ESTA form in advance. Your devices can also be seized and examined at the border. You can’t be forced to provide your passwords but if you refuse they can deny you entry. Just recently tourists have been put into indefinite ICE detention rather than just being turned back at the border like you might usually expect.

helenafalco · 28/03/2025 06:40

The social media section does say optional...however I only have one social media account and I did put it down. I wonder if you have a prominent social media presence and opt out of including it, what then? My application was approved 5 minutes after submitting, so there is chance more scrutiny is done at the point of entry so not worth taking chances.

1vyBerry · 28/03/2025 06:45

My husband was listening to a podcast and apparently a lot of the USA relied on people just doing the right thing as opposed to firm laws. When/ if he ever goes they are apparently going to have to completely rebuild due to so much damage being done with this administration just doing what they like.I’m wondering how as the Supreme Court is full of those Trump put in who are there for life.

I too loved America however something has shifted in my view towards it. It’s a stunning beautiful country but the people aren’t who I thought they were. I thought they were better than this. Same podcast said this is what America was like pre second world war as regards isolation and their involvement (which took a lot of persuasion) changed things a lot.

I’ve seen a lot of what I want to see and there is a lot more of the world to see. Loads .I refuse to spend a shed load of money to end up being dicked around at airports or treated like criminals.I also don’t wish to be in a country that is so scornful about the rest of the world. A holiday isn’t worth that.

LavenderBlue19 · 28/03/2025 06:57

It is a terrible shame, and difficult to see how things will end up given the pace of change already. They simply won't be trusted, even if/when this lot are out of power.

What really concerns me, though, is the possibility of it happening in this country. It's very obvious that online propaganda, probably funded by Russia, has completely addled people's brains. We're going to have the same here in four years, with Farage and Reform.

MushMonster · 28/03/2025 07:01

We are right to worry about the every day American indeed.
But we also need to worry about ourselves. We have just been sandwiched between Trump's US-Russia-Unstable, volatile ME- not calmed Africa.
The only ones who are not, yet at least, a problem is East Asia and Oceania. Hopefully China will not turn funny too.
Trump's lot is obssesed with opposing Europe, trying to humulliate Europe, presenting Europe as a weak party, and alligning with Putin.
We have no option but to re- build our reality and ally with others closer. Actually, the US has been a drag in international institutions like the UN for a while now. Just being the vote to stop anything from happening and against our principles.

I’d like to think we have tighter laws and the British people will protest more. I also think having the end result playing out in front of us will be helpful.

1vyBerry · 28/03/2025 07:03

And yes we need to align more with Europe and build up defences. Farage looks like a silly little boy now.
