To worry about America?

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:37

I used to love America and would holiday there every year. We have had some amazing road trips there over the years. We were due to go to New Orleans this year but I’ve cancelled, I no longer want to go.

They are completely alienating themselves from the rest of the world, talking about taking over other countries, turning on allies, suddenly best mates with Russia ….

I watched that awful woman speaking to the UK journalist this morning “we don’t give a crap about your opinion” - how rude and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on trump - greeting Zelenskyy with “I see you’ve dressed up for the occasion” !!! I’m no fan of Starmer but could you imagine him greeting a foreign leader like that?

Imagine Rachel Reeves screaming at a journalist that we don’t give a crap about their opinion?

What is wrong with America right now and will they ever recover from this administration?

I really do wish that that ridiculous second state visit for Trump had never been offered.

With any luck, Princess Anne will step in and deal with him appropriately. Grin

Oh my god, I would love to see/hear that.

This is closets to orignial footage I first saw - masked men approaching and detaining a woman on valid student visa of the street - one I saw it was neigbour filming shouting wtf and they ID as police though stayed masked. Then there was some court ruling saying she couldn't be taken out of state - which happened anyway - then her lawyer had no idea where she was - now apparently her visa been revoked.

Her crime was 12 month ago to be involve - and I think wrote an article that was pro palestine.

Not heard more since.

I think it's sinister and I can understand why DH decline conferences in USA even though as white male UK national he unlikely to hit problems - but why risk it.

I am seeing surpise via USA via news about the impact already had with mostly Canadian actions.

I don't think there is a big well thought out plan behind it all - I think USA economy will suffer and rest of world will as well but rest of world will fordge new alliances and find new market places. I also think it's a bigger problem than just Trump - it's people round him and The Reublican party and the people who voted for him and possibly their entire poltical system.

Haven’t RTFT but I’m more worried about the dismal state the UK is in than I am about the US.

I find it really embarrassing that we have this shower supposedly representing us. I cringe to say it but I used to think the UK was important but our own government don’t gaf and that’s really clear.I’m so glad that MTG told the British journalist to go and report on matters happening here, that she told the BBC where to go is even better. Well said!

It’s like an alternate universe where I’ve woken up in hell to hear the dalek tones of Starmer and Reeves spouting rubbish about how they’re helping us - who are they helping exactly? then that utter buffoon Miliband has reappeared and is in charge of our energy strategy?! holy fuck we are so so doomed and Lammy at the foreign office, I mean what the hell??? It’s like a really bad dream. We are seriously fucked in this country, maybe ignorance is bliss for those of you not aware. Young people are not able to get jobs, there’s no growth and small businesses will struggle and they’re where growth comes from.

America is the last country I’d worry about right now, they’re gonna be just fine.

LoveItaly · 28/03/2025 15:28

I don’t have the energy to worry about the US, I think we have more than enough things to worry about in the UK to be honest.

You think that MTG was correct in how she treated a professional journalist who was doing her job to report on issues in America which directly impact the UK?

YANBU. I am a US citizen living in the US. When friends from abroad ask tentatively about visiting the US, I advise them not to. If I weren't tied to the country for a variety of reasons, I would leave for the next few years (or possibly permanently, depending on how things pan out). I have never seen anything like the authoritarian insanity coming from the lunatic currently in the White House and his henchmen. We are teetering on the brink of fascism and it is terrifying.

I'm sorry King Charles is unwell enough to have a day off today. The royals aren't daft though. An extended period of convalescence may prove necessary and lead to an unavoidable and lengthy delay to a presidential visit. 🤞 👑

Journalists haven’t been doing their job in reporting issues that impact the UK in the UK. So I’m not sure what kind of reporting you were expecting from Sky in the US.

Do your job not selectively do your job. That’s why they’re rightly being called out.

@TooBigForMyBoots a laugh emoji at my post from someone who in all seriousness posted a Huffington Post link is tragic.

The Sky journalist was trying to ask a question about Signalgate - very relevant. MJG was incredibly rude but the American journalist who had the opportunity to ask the same question, backed up Martha who is US based.

I'm seeing reports that she was involved in pro Hamas activity.

I am an immigrant to France and if I was involved in pro Hamas activity, I'd be fully expecting to have my visa revoked. I don't see why people who support actual terrorist groups and actions and who are in a foreign country think they can do what they want without any come back.

Well the job of a foreign correspondent is to pose questions to foreign leaders so she was doing their job. The same job American foreign correspondents do too though most politicians are able to remain professional.

If you can't see why questioning US officials about an intelligence leak is relevant when the UK is part of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, then I can't really help you. Or what impact tariffs have on the UK manufacturing industry.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/03/2025 16:37

I’m more worried about the UK.

The general decline is staggering.

No one cares about manners, it’s dirty, overcrowded, noisy and expensive.

Crime everywhere and no one cares.

The US government has deported Venezuelan asylum seekers just because they had the wrong tattoos so why do you think they are telling the truth now?
And supporting Palestine is not the same as supporting Hamas. If there is actually proof that she was supporting Hamas it shouldn't be that hard to proof it before a judge? Strangely with those cases there never seems to be any tangible evidence.

VibeShift · 28/03/2025 16:43

All of the people suddenly concerned about journalists not being able to do their jobs. Look closer to home!

@kattaduck I don’t need your help. Perhaps you’d like to talk about the impact of the Labour “government” sending people over to influence US elections and support the Democrats campaign before you talk about the impact of tariffs on our manufacturing industry. Actions have consequences.

Who is reporting about our own government who are doing more to destroy it. Where’s our steel industry? Our energy industry? Our manufacturing, energy and food security are being seriously diminished.

For most on this thread its easier to moan about Trump and the US than address what’s going on in the UK. That includes holding journalists to account for what’s happening here.

I think we should worry about the state of the UK first. A lot of people around the world think we've lost our minds.

Yes, and this is relevant to this thread how? If you think what happens to the US doesn't affect the UK, you're deluded. Trumps threatening tariffs on our motor industry by the way.....

I guess you feel we've "lost our minds" because we've not voted for whatever right wing extremist you've no doubt had a craving for.

It is currently unclear what charges she is facing or how she allegedly supported Hamas.

Ozturk was one of four students who wrote an article in a student newspaper last March that criticised Tufts' response to Israel's war on Hamas and attacks in Gaza.
...
Friends told the Associated Press news agency that Ozturk was not closely involved in pro-Palestinian protests, but that after the article was published, her name, photo and work history were featured by Canary Mission.

I've seen this article she co-authored written a year ago before the USA election and publichsed cited as a reason for it all - but only heard quotes so far from CNN which basilly she wrote all people should be respected - and that was taken as reference to Gaza. So I don't yet know how bad what she wrote was - or why this self professed group decided to use her picture on their website.

So far only people saying she was a Hamas supporter - seem to be USA government people but they've done no charges and offered no further explination.

Same government has also be very pubically caught lying and trying to besmusch others repuation with the whole Singal and Yemen debacle to cover up their fuck-ups.

Even if I agree perhaps on a visa you should be wary of protesting in countries with free speach when did it become normal to grab women of the street in masks and unmarked cars and ignore court orders saying they can't take her out of the state and transport them 1000 miles away.

Because the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying that the reason this person was arrested was because he had tattoos consistent with being a member of TdA. No further evidence has been provided nor has there been any criminal record. The tattoo was a tribute to Real Madrid, clearly a very dangerous criminals association.
Why unearth some obscure law which denies asylum seekers due process and is not applicable anyway if there is evidence that those deported are criminals? Why not just prove it in court? Maybe because the "cool story bro" is that actually someone like the president is more of a convicted criminal than some of those deported to El Salvador.

I was thinking the other day about how talk of taxes rising and increased defence spending would impact my family finances. I came to the conclusion that I could stomach the impact if I could witness Starmer, just once, tell Trump to sod off. I’d love to see the rest of the world isolate America and the UK to become closer to Europe again.
