To worry about America?

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:37

I used to love America and would holiday there every year. We have had some amazing road trips there over the years. We were due to go to New Orleans this year but I’ve cancelled, I no longer want to go.

They are completely alienating themselves from the rest of the world, talking about taking over other countries, turning on allies, suddenly best mates with Russia ….

I watched that awful woman speaking to the UK journalist this morning “we don’t give a crap about your opinion” - how rude and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on trump - greeting Zelenskyy with “I see you’ve dressed up for the occasion” !!! I’m no fan of Starmer but could you imagine him greeting a foreign leader like that?

Imagine Rachel Reeves screaming at a journalist that we don’t give a crap about their opinion?

What is wrong with America right now and will they ever recover from this administration?

Not putting up a man in his 80s in serious cognitive decline would have been a start.

And then forced into making a late change with Harris an extraordinarily weak presidential candidate. Is that really the best they can do?

And so much of the woke/trans madness (which went insane last few years) comes from the Democrats and is just buying votes for the right.

Yet Trump, who barely makes sense, comes across as deranged and is the same age, was a vote winner.

The problem isn't the candidates, the problem is the lack of an alternative to the status quo. People are barely subsisting, working their arses off and feel ripped off. This is happening all over the West and people are turning to extremism.

I don't see much difference between TRA ideology and fascist ideology. How is book burning and punishing people for the wrong 'ideology' any better? Trump is ignoring the constitution and ignoring basic rights - how is that better?

Haven’t rtft but if I were to be concerned about where things are going I’d consider bigger shifts and pressures affecting smaller countries, including here. The US will be ok.

The US is likely to be in recession by the second half of this year - it’s not looking ok.

They’ll be ok. They always are. They produce much of their own energy and food.

And they are 1/4 of the global economy. It’s likes of this irrelevant little island with people that have delusions of grandeur that needs to worry about how to pay its bills.

Edited

This is closer to reality for the US. It’s production of the stuff you need that counts.

As much as people are wanting US not to be ok over time they will be. Particularly if they can up production of more stuff.

It's losing investment and suffering increased Brain Drain as academics and scientists leave because of Trump's constraints and the loss of free speech.

The man is wrecking America.

Trump is a couple of years younger than Biden and also clearly not all there cognitively.

So they should have beaten him.

yes I agree @User135644

also democrats have in many areas shown a terrible lack of ability to govern. They allocated $42bn to roll out rural broadband under the Biden administration. Nobody has rural broadband yet. And California has wasted billions on a high speed rail link that they have been failing to build for years.

we should have had Josh Shapiro. Maybe next time (if we make it that far).

Democrats cities tend to be a dumpster fire as well. California since it turned blue has rotted away socially.

Personally I would still take the democrats in a heartbeat over this terrifying autocratic shitshow but we are where we are. I really hope they can sort themselves out and become electable, and it is not too little too late.

Anyone trying to understand what makes Trump tick and what is actually going on in his tiny mind should listen to the interview with Michael Wolff on The Rest is Politics Leading, who spent years inside the White House with Trump and his inner circle close up before writing a book about him.

In a nutshell, he says there is no plan in Trump’s head. He is purely and only motivated by headlines, and being the reality star. When asked why he wanted to be POTUS he replied “to be the most famous man in the world”. Wolff says Trump is not a serious person. The problem is everyone treats him like he is because he’s the POTUS, but there is nothing else there, no plan, no strategy other than say this, say that, say anything to get the headline, and a pursuit of wealth. The reason he’s obsessed with Putin is because Putin’s widely believed to be (secretly) the wealthiest man in the world, and Trump worships wealth.

Wolff also says that Melania could be Trump’s only weakness / Achilles heel as she is entirely transactional, has him giving her exactly what she wants and has the power to upend the whole thing.

I love visiting the US with both work hand holidays, circa 7 or 8 times per year.
I'm off to texas next week and looking forward to it.
As for DT and MAGA, they're doing what they said before elected.
Wish DT could be our PM

Serpentstooth · 28/03/2025 13:44

Why not stay there @Whammyyammy? Unlikely you'll be missed here, I'm sure we'd get by without you.

alittleprivacy · 28/03/2025 13:45

You know that's verifiable bullshit right? That researcher had confidential information from Los Alamos National Laboratory on his computer, in violation of a nondisclosure agreement. He admitted to taking it without permission and that he was attempting to conceal it. That's got fuck all to do with him being critical of Trump and everything to do with him being in violation of his travel terms. But don't let the truth get in the way of scaremongering!

AlisonDonut · 28/03/2025 13:46

If you follow this news story you will find it was actually because he had items he took othout permission from a US University on him.

Sadly this is what happens when people who aren't as intelligent as they think they are get into power. The real eye opener isn't that they're off their bloody trolleys, it's that the checks and balances have fallen away so completely and so easily.

You mean the Joe Biden days, right?

Why would you want a felon as PM? Someone who is talking about ethics cleansing in Gaza, taking Greenland against their will and turning Canada into the 51st state.
He has zero understanding of world affairs and hasn’t yet understood how tariffs work. Americans are concerned about the falling value of their 401k and the likelihood of a recession.

Some of what they are doing, there is a clear mandate for. Some of it I would even kind of agree with if it was being done differently (e.g. DOGE - sure, review government spending, it probably needs it, but don't just wade in and fire people when you don't even know what they do (safeguarding nuclear weapons for example)).

what scares me is the attacks on checks and balances, due process, the courts and freedom of speech. Also the chumming up to Russia is extremely worrying.

This doesn’t sound like serious analysis tbf.

I got more from the recent movie covering the motivations of the lawyer he worked with and learnt from.

Topseyt123 · 28/03/2025 14:02

I find it all very worrying. I have zero respect for Trump, his administration or any of the American electorate who helped vote him back in.

I do have sympathy for those who didn't vote for him and didn't want him back in. They must be utterly horrified and despairing.

For the record, I also have no time for those who have actually voted for Farage and his cohort in any way, shape or form. Whether that was by voting for Brexshit or for the Reform Party since then. I am absolutely dismayed and disgusted (though sadly not really surprised) to see them now in Parliament.

Trump is in Putin's pocket, Farage is/certainly has been in Trump's pocket. If you want to see how the UK might go if people continue to vote for these arsewipes then you probably need to look no further than the USA at the moment - buddying up to Putin, starting to dismantle Western alliances, wanting to annex Greenland and even Canada (as the 51st state!) and slowly but surely turning itself into a huge dictatorship.

I really do wish that that ridiculous second state visit for Trump had never been offered. I think that there is definitely a case to be argued for rescinding the invitation given Trump and Vance's current behaviour.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 28/03/2025 14:04

Fuck America. They chose to be Mr Billy Big Balls and not care about anyone or anything.
We, in the UK, need to strengthen our ties with Europe and Canada.
I would much rather be close to my European neighbours than the batshit Americans and their nut job president.

With any luck, Princess Anne will step in and deal with him appropriately. Grin

think of the second state visit as buying time for the uk to sort out its defense situation.

it is good if Putin thinks America might still aid the uk.
