To worry about America?

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:37

I used to love America and would holiday there every year. We have had some amazing road trips there over the years. We were due to go to New Orleans this year but I’ve cancelled, I no longer want to go.

They are completely alienating themselves from the rest of the world, talking about taking over other countries, turning on allies, suddenly best mates with Russia ….

I watched that awful woman speaking to the UK journalist this morning “we don’t give a crap about your opinion” - how rude and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on trump - greeting Zelenskyy with “I see you’ve dressed up for the occasion” !!! I’m no fan of Starmer but could you imagine him greeting a foreign leader like that?

Imagine Rachel Reeves screaming at a journalist that we don’t give a crap about their opinion?

What is wrong with America right now and will they ever recover from this administration?

Imagine if we had a government that wanted to put itself above the law, broke international law, tried to opt out of the echr, attacked the judiciary, the freedom of Universities, banned journalists & media outlets from having access, went after public broadcasting, limited protest, collapsed the economy and gave tax breaks to the rich.

They wouldn't last 15 years.

Martha, the journalist who shone through that awful interview has a podcast called Trump 100. This is the episode 'When Martha met Marjorie'
open.spotify.com/episode/3sH6WBovPIAorbgFrQ63hX?si=kXfZPX1CQ5ytQrdeG0su9A

Marjorie Taylor Greene is also the woman who told Emily Maitlis to “fuck off”, and said that David Cameron (when he was foreign secretary) can “kiss my ass”.

She has also had to retract previous comments about school shootings being staged, and no plane hitting the pentagon on 9/11.

Oh and she said that the California wildfires were started by Rothschild funded “space lasers”.

And this woman is elected!!

(Her boyfriend is the journalist who asked Zelensky about what he was wearing in the Oval Office)

Thisbastardcomputer · 28/03/2025 07:15

Try not to worry about things you have no control over

randomchap · 28/03/2025 07:16

We're witnessing the beginning of the end of the American influence throughout the world, and the slow destruction of the county from within.

Interesting times, not in a good way

You worry about America?

I think people in this country should worry about the tanking economy, the sky high energy bills and no domestic production of energy, the flight of capital and rich people leaving with their money in droves, and the fast descent into becoming a 3rd world hellhole.

America, on the other hand, is doing quite well.

The sanctimony, laughably inflated sense of superiority and delusional belief that this increasingly irrelevant country is somehow better than America is palpably noticeable on here. Wonder what bubble these people live in.

I couldn’t care less about America - they voted (in very large numbers) for what they now have.
I AM worried about the impact of America’s shift on the rest of the world.

Been to America a few times. Don’t consider it a huge loss that it is no longer in my list of potential destinations for a trip.
Ive never ‘loved’ it though. In fact all my visits there were made with at least a partial reticence.

Edited

The sad part is they didn't really vote for this. Almost half of them stayed home (my adult children who live there) and he won by the tiniest of margins.

They thought it wouldn't matter if they voted or not. All politicians are the same they said. They clearly aren't.

As a dual citizen, I'm very glad I'm not living there now. But I'm very sad for the country. I'm.terrified for my children.

Bigly admires Putin and wants to prove his country, USA, is as tremendously big and powerful, more big and tremendous, than Putin's country. Like toddlers comparing their favourite toys. We're in the position of waiting to see whose wheels fall off first. I think it would take a woman with the determination of Rees-Moggs nanny to sort them out. What an unhouse-trained rabble in the White House. I expect they pee on the floor.

You appear to be talking complete and utter bollocks.

America is going to shit

Roe vs Wade overturned leading to many states outlawing abortion
Florida rolling back child labour laws
Doge going round destroying the instruments of state

I could go on, but I can't be arsed

Takoneko · 28/03/2025 07:30

This is an interesting read.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-journalists-covered-rise-mussolini-hitler-180961407/

It probably won’t be online for that much longer given the executive order this morning putting Vance in charge of purging the Smithsonian of “improper ideology”.

Diorchristian · 28/03/2025 07:30

Yes and no.
Disgusting that they spoke to a head of state, zelensky like that.
It felt very set up.
The arrogance coming through is appalling.
I can't see how the country won't just be jammed up in law suits for decades to come!
People deported without question, loosing jobs etc.
@1vyBerry how much more alignment do you want? You do understand we are geographically always in Europe? We have been hosting and leading this reassurance force idea.
We are still part of the justice part.

On the other hand I don't think it will be all bad for the states.
Unfortunately it's how these things get gone about it.

Diorchristian · 28/03/2025 07:31

What also concerns me is the right wing Christian ideology coming through

jeaux90 · 28/03/2025 07:32

well I’m off there for holidays, my sister lives there and I’m not going to let the histrionics stop me. Honestly some of the reactions are totally batshit considering what’s going on in our own country. People happily spend their money swanning off to Dubai which in my opinion is way worse than the US.

BlusteryLake · 28/03/2025 07:33

Yesterday I encountered the first Americans I have met who have left the USA and come to live in Europe, because of the Trump administration. I imagine I will meet more in the coming months.

I know this is just a joke but, in all seriousness, you have to list your social media accounts on your ESTA form in advance. Your devices can also be seized and examined at the border. You can’t be forced to provide your passwords but if you refuse they can deny you entry. Just recently tourists have been put into indefinite ICE detention rather than just being turned back at the border like you might usually expect.

Yep. We deliberately visited the US last October, before the election. I had to declare my FB (interestingly, not Twitter) on the ESTA application, which wasn’t an issue as I don’t post political content on FB. We won’t be visiting again until the US is blue again, but if I had to go for any reason, I’d be doing a mass delete of my social posts to be on the safe side.

TheGrimSmile · 28/03/2025 07:35

Not to mention the university professors who are critical being arrested and disappearing. This is like something from the Spanish Civil War when people kept "disappearing" during the night. It's terrifying.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 28/03/2025 08:28

Already have my esta for this year…no idea what dh put on it but a few years ago he ticked yes for ‘seeking to or had ever engaged in terrorist activities or genocide’

for 14 year old dd

but yes, i do take on board that this is a serious matter

Let's hope they don't find this post of yours then. Trump's company has just done a deal to build in Dubai with Dar Al Arkan.

It's possible to be concerned about both, especially considering the people behind the Tory right and Reform are the same people behind Trump.

1vyBerry · 28/03/2025 07:03

And yes we need to align more with Europe and build up defences. Farage looks like a silly little boy now.

But to some people he doesn’t look silly and this is a big problem for our country.

In any other normal time, the man who gave us Brexit which has cost us billions, destroyed businesses and led to the current cuts, created the ‘small boats’ issue, admires Andrew Tate and sucks up to Trump who’s administration wishes our country harm, would have kept his head down or fled the country in shame.

Yet there are people who see him as the solution to the problems he caused. Its amazing as it is scary.

JHound · 28/03/2025 09:51

No I am not worried about the USA. I only worry about the overspill from their shitshow on other countries.

I do worry about my family members and about minority groups (specifically those that did not overwhelmingly for Trump e.g Latino men) but I just want them to keep their shit show to within their borders.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 28/03/2025 10:07

I agree with you OP. I can't abide Marjorie Taylor Greene. She's a white nationalist and is known for her hate speech and antisemitism.

The problem is , these are the people who are leading the Free World now. Pete Hegseth has Nationalist tattoos, is an alcoholic and has "financial irregularities " . This man is the US defence secretary. I just find it terrifying. Especially after the Signal debacle. Which other country would share any sensitive information with these jokers.

All we can hope is this transformative period for the US leads to a more united Europe. Now that we can see what happens when we rely on the US. I was a complete pacifist before the Trump administration and now I really understand the reason behind your own strong military.

I'm hoping people understand that this is what happens when you let the crazies run the country. So, maybe we won't have Farage at the helm in 4 years....I really think he might be our PM one day soon ......

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/03/2025 10:21

YANBU @BelloItalia. My family in America are increasingly worried about their sectors, education, women's reproductive health, hospitality, and what they've posted online.

The Trump administration is quelling free speech and the right to protest. He is dismantling their democracy before their eyes. On top of that, his chaos is costing them financially.

The Smithsonian move is symbolic of the destruction of everything the USA stood for.Sad

JHound · 28/03/2025 10:37

This kind of stuff is chilling though. This attempt to obscure and hide darker parts of US history. This is a white nationalist regime and it’s interesting that some don’t see that:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed his intention to force changes at the Smithsonian Institutionwith an executive order that targets funding for programs that advance “divisive narratives” and “improper ideology,” the latest step in a broadside against culture he deems too liberal.

Trump claimed there has been a “concerted and widespread” effort over the past decade to rewrite American history by replacing “objective facts” with a “distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth,” adding that it casts the “founding principles” of the United States in a “negative light.”
The order he signed behind closed doors puts Vice President JD Vance, who serves on the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents, in charge of overseeing efforts to “remove improper ideology” from all areas of the institution, including its museums, education and research centers, and the National Zoo.

The executive order also hints at the return of statues and monuments of Confederate figures, many of which were taken down or replaced around the country after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020 and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, which is detested by Trump and other conservatives.
The order also calls for improvements to Independence Hall in Philadelphia by July 4, 2026, in time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump singled out the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016 near the White House, the Women’s History Museum, which is in development, and the American Art Museum for criticism.

This is not “removing divisive ideology”. This is white washing US history.
