To worry about America?

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:37

I used to love America and would holiday there every year. We have had some amazing road trips there over the years. We were due to go to New Orleans this year but I’ve cancelled, I no longer want to go.

They are completely alienating themselves from the rest of the world, talking about taking over other countries, turning on allies, suddenly best mates with Russia ….

I watched that awful woman speaking to the UK journalist this morning “we don’t give a crap about your opinion” - how rude and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on trump - greeting Zelenskyy with “I see you’ve dressed up for the occasion” !!! I’m no fan of Starmer but could you imagine him greeting a foreign leader like that?

Imagine Rachel Reeves screaming at a journalist that we don’t give a crap about their opinion?

What is wrong with America right now and will they ever recover from this administration?

All of the people suddenly concerned about journalists not being able to do their jobs. Look closer to home!

@kattaduck I don’t need your help. Perhaps you’d like to talk about the impact of the Labour “government” sending people over to influence US elections and support the Democrats campaign before you talk about the impact of tariffs on our manufacturing industry. Actions have consequences.

Who is reporting about our own government who are doing more to destroy it. Where’s our steel industry? Our energy industry? Our manufacturing, energy and food security are being seriously diminished.

For most on this thread its easier to moan about Trump and the US than address what’s going on in the UK. That includes holding journalists to account for what’s happening here.

The influencing of US elections that didn't happen?

Google is your friend. You still haven't explained though why the same news network shouldn't report on American politics impacting the British economy.

What makes you think these 'wrong tattoos' are the truth in the first place?

I mean, it's a 'cool story bro' if ever I heard one.

You’re repeating Kremlin talking points…a Russian Bot, perhaps?

AlisonDonut · 28/03/2025 17:17

You cannot pretend that Mark Zuckerberg didn't admit to suppressing stories that affected the previous election results.

Nobody in the USA at a high level is innocent of trickery and subterfuge. They're all fucking at it.

The same people complaining that the US / Trump are imposing tariffs on the UK motor industry are the same ones gleefully posting about the unlawful damage being done to an American car manufacturer.

Also no one cares about being called “right wing” and “right wing extremism” is a redundant term as everything is “right wing” or “fascist” that the intolerant left don’t agree with. Or a Russian bot FGS.

Shoutout to all who voted Labour in, now facing the miserable consequences.

@kattaduck posting links from biased unreliable sources isn’t going to convince me, nor is google. You’re proving my point. Don’t waste your time. I’m not going to read them.

I agree with this. I think Bernie Sanders saying USA style democracy has let a signication section of the population down has a point.

I'm also not wild about Labour government or previous Tory ones and I'm aware of many problems in the UK.

On top of all those existing problems though we have one of the world's biggest economies causing global chaos and a previous close ally who can't be trusted. It's not just us was flipping past channels and saw a south Korean new station and they were facing problems due to tariffs.

I can't remember who they were quoting but saw an analyist talking about shfiting international power - and crumbling american influence - and they said when an empire falls they don't leave power vacuum they leave pregnant widows - meaing there is shock at changes wanting old reality back and long work raising next power up.

I think the world adjusting to changing international poltics - I don't think the USA will be fine without a change in direction - I think many there suffer from normalcy bias - but that's up to them.

WeHaveTheRabbit · 28/03/2025 17:36

No one can pretend that what is happening in the US is just business as usual. It most assuredly is not. The First Amendment protects speech. That includes speech that government officials disagree with. (Obviously.) What has happened to some international students is nothing short of terrifying. Not to mention everything else that has occurred in the past 2 months: the elevation to cabinet positions of people who are blatantly unqualified, the wanton firing of federal employees, the calls to impeach judges and even to dismantle the federal courts entirely, the threats to programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, the Signal chat debacle, the attempts to rewrite US history by removing any mention of women or non-white men, the intimidation of universities, cultural institutions, museums, etc. Sadly, I could go on.

I teach in a university in the US. I used to tell my students that they need only look at Russia in the first decade of this century to see how easily a democratic system can be dismantled. But Russia is a country that had no history of democracy prior to 1991. It was relatively easy for Putin to turn back the clocks and reassert an authoritarian style of government. Now my students are witnessing the attacks on democracy in our own country in real time. This is what fascism looks like.

What is the comparison between Tariffs and Leon Musty’s cars being damaged by American individuals.

I know this is just a joke but, in all seriousness, you have to list your social media accounts on your ESTA form in advance. Your devices can also be seized and examined at the border. You can’t be forced to provide your passwords but if you refuse they can deny you entry. Just recently tourists have been put into indefinite ICE detention rather than just being turned back at the border like you might usually expect.

I've just filled in an ESTA and you don't have to fill in the social media section, it is optional.

Not that that is really a saving grace

I’m more worried about the UK.

The general decline is staggering.

No one cares about manners, it’s dirty, overcrowded, noisy and expensive.

Crime everywhere and no one cares.

Me too. The destruction of this country is moving at quite a speed now, pretty soon we will have no industry and millions dependent on government handouts. Desperately worrying and sad.

America isn’t doing well - unemployment up, economy heading to a recession, stock market crashing and huge concerns over the falling values of 401k’s.

I do not think any of the so called West countries is doing particularly well, due to the increasing debt and the beyond useless politicians we have at present.
One of the big issues that have got us here is the very good news of an extended life expentancy. It is something to celebrate and propagate through the whole world, but the elephant in the room to be addressed. The old system was not geared for this and they have not done much to change it yet.

This is what my family in the US are saying too. But only during WA calls. They've stopped putting their views in the family WA group because they fear repercussions.

Every day their fears grow. It's bad enough watching it from across the pond, it's so much worse seeing it happen to your own country.❤️

Please let's make our cars, spoons, clothes, screws, tools, machinery... in this country. Each country should aim to be as independant as possible. But here we are, getting our mops from all the way across the world. If tomorrow there is a delay in the delivery, the floor will not be mopped, because we can no longer make our own. It is flipping ridiculous.

Yes we’re going through major geopolitical shifts and it’ll be tough whilst things emerge, and maybe after they do.

I don’t think US will crumble, I think it’s preparing its own raft to match China, Russia, India.

Major alliances are shoring up. We’re at risk of just chatting about it from a decreasing state of our own situation without thinking of our own weaknesses.

As for pp remarking on @AlisonDonutbeing a ‘bot’ that doesn’t really fly anymore. People have differing views on mn.

Your family members are wise to be circumspect. It really is a frightening time to be in the US. I hope with all my heart that we will make it through this insanity with our democracy intact. But I am not at all certain that we will.

MushMonster · 28/03/2025 18:44

Well, if people are scared to write their mind on social media, where you are meant to be able to do so, then democracy is already well chipped.

So am I. I think things will have to get even worse though, before sufficient people are fed up and disadvantaged enough to demand a change in direction. Hope it won’t be too late.

This is what the US are getting away from, even more than already as in pp they are more insular as an economy than many. That’s a strength as they are more independent for good / energy etc.

It’s not easy to change though, interrupting reliance on a cheaper good from somewhere else is hard. And also not that quick.

Business goes where the profit is. The profit isn't in paying a decent wage to people with labour laws. The profit is in exploiting people with scant rights in other countries.

We benefit from child labour, trafficking and lack of human rights with cheap goods.
