Sorry name changed as I’m mortified.

I was having a clear out for the new year and gathered four bags of clothes and toys etc for charity shop.

Last night I started taking the bags to the shed and heard noise coming from next doors garden and I was worried that someone was in there that shouldn’t be so I stood on a patio chair to look over the fence. Neighbour was in the hot tub with a man I didn’t recognise (I thought she was single!). The bloke looked up and saw me and I didn’t know what to say so when neighbour looked up I asked her if she would take the bags to charity shop for me. I have no idea why I said that, even as the words were coming out I was mortified at what I was saying. She looked a bit confused but said she’d do it so I asked her if I should bring them around and she said “well, not now” and gestured towards the man. He started laughing and she then said “just leave them in your shed for now?”

im beyond embarrassed, I just can’t believe I said that to her not to mention the embarrassment of being seen peering over the bloody fence.

please tell me I’m over thinking it. I’ve felt sick all day just thinking about it.

Go and see her and tell her the truth .. I'm sure she will see the funny side of it .!

Pillarsofsalt · 05/01/2025 20:51

Haha this is so funny. I agree just tell her exactly what happened and have a laugh over it. Poor you 😂

RaininSummer · 05/01/2025 20:51

That's hilarious. I actually agree that you should speak to her. Just knock on the door and apologise and tell her the actual truth that you were looking for innocent reasons and then panicked and something mad.

Journeyintomelody · 05/01/2025 20:53

I agree with the PPs. Tell her, it's funny and innocent.

OtterlyMad · 05/01/2025 20:53

Oh god I’m mortified for you! 😂 I think on this occasion, the truth is less strange than your cover story, so I would go round with a bottle of wine or box of chocolates and just explain what happened - try to make light of it!

Flipslop · 05/01/2025 20:54

Sorry you’re beating yourself up over this but it’s really made me giggle as it’s the type of thing I’d do myself. Put your brave pants on and go and see her and tell her you’re mortified, you already said she was laughing at the time, you didn’t do anything nasty, go and clear the air, I can guarantee you’ll be relieved and realise you’re totally overthinking this x

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 05/01/2025 20:54

I totally agree. Take a bottle of wine over, come clean and have a laugh about it together … “Bloody hell Wilma, I’m so embarrassed about last night. Of course I don’t want you to take the stuff to the charity shop for me, I just opened my mouth and those were the words that fell out. Your new bloke seems nice though!”

Joelle84 · 05/01/2025 20:56

😂

CatsBeCrazy · 05/01/2025 20:58

Honestly I'd just tell her exactly what happened , she will understand if she is a decent person.
I remember having to go into nursery to look at my daughter work . I remember (like it was yesterday ) her having a tantrum and lifting up the back of my Gypsy skirt , I was so upset and embarrassed I told my DP about it as soon as I got home as I was worried people had seen 👎🫣😳 it was fine , no one said anything or laughed when I was about . But yeah I can understand that mortified feeling .

PreferMyAnimals · 05/01/2025 20:58

She's probably confused. Just tell her the truth.

Ghostin · 05/01/2025 21:00

This is so funny 🤣 I’m mortified for you but you didn’t do anything bad, it’s a benign mistake! I agree with PPs to pop round tomorrow and explain, you’ll feel better for it.

HolyStyleFailBatman · 05/01/2025 21:00

Oh Lordy. Exactly the kind of thing I would do. Go and explain what happened, have a good laugh about it. It might turn out to be a bonding experience.

KazMeddy · 05/01/2025 21:00

Thanks everyone, I do need to clear the air I know but I barely know her, which just makes the whole “will you do me a favour” thing even worse

I’d bet a huge amount that she’s had a good laugh about this. It’s a good way to get to know each other. If i was the neighbour id think you were funny and sweet tbf

It's not often I say this on Mumsnet but you're definitely not overthinking it!

I'd be beyond mortified too lol.

Definitely this. You can have a good laugh about this with her by the sounds of it.

On the contrary, I bet she's fuming!

She'll be calling the OP all sorts of cheeky fucker names I imagine.

Let's just hope she's not a Mumsnetter, although I'm going to keep my eye out for the thread Wink

Circumferences · 05/01/2025 21:06

Why the fuck did you say that 🤣😆
That's one hell of a brain fart.

XWKD · 05/01/2025 21:06

Just explain the situation to her.

ioveelephants · 05/01/2025 21:06

Omg this is the funniest post I've read in ages 😂😂😂 love it!

OverthinkingOlive · 05/01/2025 21:07

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

CatsBeCrazy · 05/01/2025 21:07

Bless you Op. my daughter caused me no end of embarrassment over the years 🤣 took her to a party bus party at about 30years old . After we had left she had decided to run off , I ran after her on wet muddy grass , I fell into a massive muddy puddle in front of a little group of teens . I phoned my sister in tears . I was cold , wet and muddy and had to walk home like it .

CatsBeCrazy · 05/01/2025 21:08

3 years old lol 😂

comedycentral · 05/01/2025 21:10

Oh my goodness. You just have to tell her! Otherwise you look crackers.
