Sorry name changed as I’m mortified.

I was having a clear out for the new year and gathered four bags of clothes and toys etc for charity shop.

Last night I started taking the bags to the shed and heard noise coming from next doors garden and I was worried that someone was in there that shouldn’t be so I stood on a patio chair to look over the fence. Neighbour was in the hot tub with a man I didn’t recognise (I thought she was single!). The bloke looked up and saw me and I didn’t know what to say so when neighbour looked up I asked her if she would take the bags to charity shop for me. I have no idea why I said that, even as the words were coming out I was mortified at what I was saying. She looked a bit confused but said she’d do it so I asked her if I should bring them around and she said “well, not now” and gestured towards the man. He started laughing and she then said “just leave them in your shed for now?”

im beyond embarrassed, I just can’t believe I said that to her not to mention the embarrassment of being seen peering over the bloody fence.

please tell me I’m over thinking it. I’ve felt sick all day just thinking about it.

I'd just drop her a text and explain exactly what you said here then you can both laugh about it. Also, tell her she doesn't need to take the stuff to the charity shop. x

Shrinkingrose · 05/01/2025 21:45

I’m not sure id try to explain further past sorry about last night, I only looked as I thought burglars.

and leave it there. Anything more she might find a little disturbing,

im not sure why you thought someone who shouldn’t be there v your neighbour, or the fact you didn’t recognise the man is Important.

OurDreamLife · 05/01/2025 21:46

Haha shouldn’t be so nosy.

Mielbee · 05/01/2025 21:46

This gave me a good chuckle, thanks OP! I do feel for you though. Definitely do as PP have said and pop over to explain. The truth is far less weird! I'm sure you'll be able to bond over it.

This is hilarious OP. I can just picture this like a very awkward Miranda type scenario 😅

Yeah you are going to have to write a whole sitcom now to share this gem of an experience with the wider world.

This!

If you don’t have her number then try and catch her and tell her the truth.

Say you saw the guy and panicked thinking he’d think you were a peeping tom.

I’d be more relieved that you haven’t asked me to go to the charity shop!

ScruffMuffin · 05/01/2025 21:50

Ah, OP, just explain to her that you were surprised and blurted out something stupid. And that she doesn't need to take your bags to the charity shop! I like the wine idea. Maybe you could share a bottle and have a giggle about the situation.

I'd have been mortified and worried too, and can understand how anxious you must feel. But I'm sorry... the comments from other posters have had me absolutely howling. I've laughed until the tears came!

Bearbookagainandagain · 05/01/2025 21:52

I agree that you have to tell her, the truth is so much better in this case!
Maybe bring a box of chocolate or something.

Yes, it's a good job the chair didn't wobble, sending OP over the fence and into the hot tub on top of them!😂

Choccyscofffy · 05/01/2025 21:53

Your neighbour sounds lovely, you sound quirky, I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.

BeAzureAnt · 05/01/2025 21:54

Oh, OP, just go over and explain. Your neighbour was amused and bemused. I doubt she is angry whatsoever.

Definitely this.
😁

ttcat37 · 05/01/2025 21:55

No this is both mortifying and hilarious in equal measure. You have to go around and apologise/ explain. Take a packet of biscuits and hope she invites you in for a cuppa and a good laugh. It was harmless and will be hilarious to you as well one day so don’t lose sleep over it!

PoisonRain · 05/01/2025 21:56

Bahahaha, genuinely laughing here. She 100% thinks you're a batshit CF 🤣

Just pop round (when it's convenient!) and tell her the truth. "God I'm so sorry about the other night, I heard strange noises and peeped over the fence. Faced with you and a bloke in the hot tub I panicked and said the first thing that came into my head. You really don't have to take my charity bags."

Then leg it.

kaos2 · 05/01/2025 20:49

Go and see her and tell her the truth .. I'm sure she will see the funny side of it .!

This. It's a story to dine out on!

ScruffMuffin · 05/01/2025 22:00

I'd also get in there sharpish, like tomorrow. If you leave it any longer, you run the risk of her knocking on the door asking about the charity shop bags, at a time when you're unprepared and at risk of blurting out something else memorable! 😂

AUDHD · 05/01/2025 22:01

You need to tell her OP

Workhardcryharder · 05/01/2025 22:02

Loved all of this 😂

Tiredofallthis101 · 05/01/2025 22:02

This has honestly made my day- brilliant. Sorry OP. In all seriousness I'd just write a letter explaining the situation, that you thought there was an intruder but it turned out you were the one intruding. Then you had foot in mouth and looked mad. Apologies! No expectation to take bags to the charity shop at all. And perhaps throw in a box of chocolates for good measure, noting they are a bribe to induce her to forget your slip of the tongue and start again!

Sidebeforeself · 05/01/2025 22:03

God no not a letter!

Topsyturvy78 · 05/01/2025 22:07

Aww that's just cheered me up. 😆

I was feeling sad watching the documentary about the London bomb.😭😔

CaptainBeanThief · 05/01/2025 22:09

I think you need to find the cheapest plane tickets and emigrate to a land far, far away 🤣🤣🤣🤣

hopes2409 · 05/01/2025 22:12

Totaleclipseofthemind · 05/01/2025 21:40

Upsetting a neighbour with a tacky hot tub in their garden is impossible. Stop worrying. I am sure the random man got his full hot tub service too 🤢

Edited

Someone obviously isn't getting any 🤣🤣

mumandmumber · 05/01/2025 22:16

Totally agree you should just tell her. Have you got her number? Can you text her to explain and make a joke out of it all?
“Hey Claire, omg I am so mortified, please ignore what I said about the charity shop! (And then tell the story?)”
I’m sure she’ll see the funny side and just appreciate that you were keeping an eye on her property.
