There's something weird going on in my house

1000 replies

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Hugs op, hope there’s an easy answer

AtlasPine · 19/10/2024 23:34

Oh no!

I assume you live alone?

Peasnbeans · 19/10/2024 23:34

Think I'd be calling the police if I lived alone.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/10/2024 23:35

If it’s not an intruder than a possibility might be husband has lost job and pretend leaves for it every morning and then sloths about the house all day, leaves just before you come home and then comes back at usual time if he’d worked.

He would know the blind spots of your cameras.

Peasnbeans · 19/10/2024 23:36

I'd want the DNA of the blood in my bathroom!

WhatWouldHopperDo · 19/10/2024 23:36

We found blood like that in our bath once. A bit confused then a couple of days later, DH found the cat sitting in the bath scratching. He had some badly dry skin and had scratched it to bleeding which was flicking everywhere when he scratched.

Is that a possibility?

I was just thinking that. You can call police and they will take samples of the blood to test. We had a similar break in and they sent round a forensics technician.

Dreamerinme · 19/10/2024 23:37

You need to check the loft even if the hatch looks small. Change all external door locks and set up cameras around the house, including at all external doors.

Noseybookworm · 19/10/2024 23:37

So no-one has come in or out as you would have seen them on the door/hallway camera? Is there a back door that someone could have come through? Good idea to change the locks, I'd also have DH have a look in the loft with a torch! The spots of blood on the toilet are strange but I'd assume it must be the cats 😳

Me too! Sister has offered to put us up, thinking of taking her up on it!

Luckily I have a big noisy dog with me but I'm still so creeped out. I know it wasn't there this morning - I wiped the top over.

If there's blood then I would call the police too. At the very least ask them to do a sweep of the property.

Waboofoo · 19/10/2024 23:38

I have heard of people being able to access the next door loft in Victorian terrace houses and it explaining strange occurrences. Could this be a possibility?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 19/10/2024 23:38

Thats so creepy and weird.

Waboofoo · 19/10/2024 23:42

Th most straightforward explanation is usually the actual reason. So I would guess the cat is most likely… or a shaving incident?

. Have you checked the cat for wounds? You can usually feel the scabs on their skin if they’ve been picking and bleeding.

Have a husband who is definitely 100% at work. We work at the same small company so I'd know if he'd lost his job.

Neither of us have been in since the mornings - I got home at about 6 but have just come upstairs.

Will check the loft asap which will realistically be in the morning when I can get some ladders that are tall enough to reach.

Check your cats for any signs of blood. I had blood splattered all over the door, the hall, the window ... black cat had a cut on her tail. Swished it everywhere.

As for the other stuff ... more cameras, a second and a third dog and nail the loft shut while the police are there.

Cats and dog are all fine and have been shut out of the bathroom all day. The room was empty when I opened the door.

It's detached so no shared loft spaces.

Tbh I don't think there's much space in the loft because of the layout of the house.

The cat is the likely culprit. You'll find a lovely present from her, possibly still alive.

I genuinely don't think it's from my animals - it wasn't there when I left this morning and the door has been shut all day (because they like to knock everything into the bath tub)

Thank you all for posting - it's making me feel a lot better and less alone!

I've been right through with the dog and there's no one here but me ATM.

I'm just really concerned that someone is in the house during the day when I'm out. And really fucking creeped out ATM.

Zonder · 19/10/2024 23:47

Really odd.

I honestly don't think the police will come and sweep for clues though.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/10/2024 23:48

That is a job for the police. Cats and dogs can’t get milk out the fridge and then leave it out.

The youngest two don't go out, and the big lad who does has a spot where he leaves his critters. Really hoping that's the answer but I genuinely don't see how because the bathroom door has been closed all day.
