There's something weird going on in my house

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

But if you are 100% sure it’s blood then you’re saying someone definitely has been in the house. You’re sure it’s not an animal. So you are definite that someone has been in? This is very worrying and I don’t know what I’d do but I think I wouldn’t be staying there. I hope you got the cameras on fast delivery.
I have just got into bed and thought let me look at mumsnet to try to relax a bit…

I'm really hoping it's from a mouse my big cat brought in. Sorry for stressing you out too.

If it helps, we're 100% sure there's no one in the house apart from us and the animals ATM. Door chains are on, only place we haven't checked is the loft because the ladders are at my parents and I don't want to worry them at this time of night.

Could DH be having an affair? I know it sounds weird but no weirder than the other explanations? The blood spots look like they've been sprayed, as if someone's coughed them up?

The police won’t be remotely interested in this. They barely come out for anything besides serious crime anymore

Pity you didn't read all of OPs posts first. It's very easy to do. Click on the "all" link in first post.

It might not be blood. Creepy crawlies can leave er residue (aka shit) and other detritus around. I'm forever finding little black dots around my house, turns out it's spider poo.

Might be a stretch but if you have cameras downstairs and near your door it doesn't sound like it could realistically be a person, unless they are getting in via another window somewhere? Loft doesn't sound likely if you are detached and there's not much space. But maybe get your dh to check it out just in case. I'd be freaked out too but I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation.

If it is spider poo at least he tried to do it in the correct place. So many droplets though so either a whole plague of spiders or an unwell one

Applemayjune · 20/10/2024 00:53

Creepy!

121Diet · 20/10/2024 00:53

Take a video of cupboards, surfaces etc before you next leave the house.

No, we're very happily married and he's a shit liar. I'm not having an affair either.

No.

North west England.

Why?

I think cats can open doors

Alicehatter · 20/10/2024 00:55

Really hoping it's the big cat, or a creature in the extractor!!

101 said they'd send someone round at some point but it's not an emergency so no idea when.

ah no just cos you said bath tub and critters, sounded a bit American and because of all those scary house films it seemed to fit 😊

when is your husband getting back? it's 1am

I wouldn't put it past him but it opens into the room so I'm not sure how he'd have closed it without locking himself in. And the big daft idiot was waiting for me in the living room when I came in.

What are all the grey flecks on the cistern in amongst the orangey ones?

valentinka31 · 20/10/2024 00:58

Personally I absolutely would go to my sister's until the police have been and collected the dna

He's been home for a while now. Thank god! I feel a lot safer not being home alone!

Hmm.

I would definitely check the attic

BlackOrangeFrog · 20/10/2024 00:58

Hmmmm

I think the most likely explanation is the most likely explanation. And that's if you left the lights on, milk out etc.

Buckbeak123 · 20/10/2024 00:59

Following this story as its so bizarre! Hoping you find a logical explanation and stay safe x x

Emulsion paint I think - it's some sort of paint stuck on that I can't get off!

This puts me in mind of a Victorian with consumption. Could this be it? It’s ghost month after all

blueshoes · 20/10/2024 01:00

Can you get your dog to sniff at the blood spots to see its reaction?

The top of the cistern is higher up so you may have to carry it.
