There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

The blood spots are kind of odd. Like if you cut yourself shaving, they'd be bigger spots than that.

merryandbrightdelight · 20/10/2024 01:02

Hope you get sorted op!

Emulsion paint I think - it's some sort of paint stuck on that I can't get off!

Ah OK so they aren't new marks too? And the cleaning spray you used this morning hasn't reacted with some of them in any way turning them red/orange? Grasping at straws!

blueshoes · 20/10/2024 01:02

A splatter of blood does not normally just land on one spot, the top of the cistern. If it is truly the result of a splatter, there will be spots on the surrounding wall and floor. Can you check?

Otherwise, the spots may have got there by different means ...

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/10/2024 00:40

I'd want police to take a sample of the blood for testing.
And, if a match comes up with someone long dead I'd be outta there so fast.... 🫣

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Can you get your dog to sniff at the blood spots to see its reaction?

The top of the cistern is higher up so you may have to carry it.

And If he laughs you know it’s been him messing around

Elphamouche · 20/10/2024 01:03

Left DH downstairs with the baby and sent myself to bed. Considering getting back up now cause I’m freaked out! Hope you’re okay OP!

Dustydolly · 20/10/2024 01:03

Is someone coming round during the day to check on/walk your dog? If you leave in the morning and don't get back till 6 as you say you did tonight.

horseHorseHorse · 20/10/2024 01:04

I'm absolutely shattered, going to try to get some sleep so please don't panic if I don't post for a while. Been up since 5am and the scare has left me with a thumping headache too!

I just zoomed right in on the photo.

I don't think it looks like blood? Just my opinion.

What do other people think?

This is a good point. I’ve had bed bugs before (acquired from a hotel!) and they left droplets of blood under the bed.

My first thoughts.

Cleaning my bathroom earlier and there was a line of those harlequin ladybirds strutting across the wall tiles and window sill, chuck them out the window, turn your back and there's more of them.
You could see brown dots where they'd been.

If someone was in your house while you were out surely they'd be known to your dog, I couldn't imagine my dogs ever letting strangers in with having a word with them.

Mumto42005 · 20/10/2024 01:06

Hope you get this sorted OP.

I’ve had two similar situations.
The first where things were moved / toilet seat changed position during the day, son felt someone touch him in the middle of the night but nothing found and no explanations. I moved after 6 months of this (but was renting at that property so easier to do!).

The second was a similar situation but without my son feeling someone had touched him. It turned out my ex had broken into my house and was living in my loft without my knowledge. He would come
down when I’d left for work, shower, eat, chill etc and go back up before I returned from work.

He was found as I went away with my children on holiday, and my Nan was keeping an eye on my house whilst away. When she was checking all was ok in the rooms, discovered him asleep in my bed! 🙄 She got him out, called the police and an injunction was put in place. The officer had said he’d never seen anything like it in his 30 plus years as an officer… mind you, this was 12 years ago now!!

Sending hugs xx

User100000000000 · 20/10/2024 01:07

@LittleGreenDragons

Look at the time I wrote that.

Comprehension is key.

Also I can guarantee the officer was sent begrudgingly and more to make OP feel better. They won’t do a single thing because resources don't stretch to pathology for things like this. They should be able to do more but they can’t!

The moved stuff and lights are concerning, and I definitely think a few hidden cameras are in order.

With regard to the blood, my Mum has Alzheimer's and my brother and I were worried when we started finding what appeared to be blood smeared around in the bathroom. Mum could not explain it, and when further investigated I realised that it was most likely coming from her elderly cat who frequently sleeps in the bath/basin etc. After checking said cat over thoroughly, it turned out to not be blood at all, but stains from where she had been sleeping in a neighbours flower bed that was covered in decorative bark.

I hope you find an explanation for it all very soon.

We get almost identical red dots on our cistern when the cat has picked up fleas.

For some reason she likes to sit on top to scratch. It is useful though, as it triggers treatment (she gets them from roaming the fields and often).

Did you wipe the cistern, then immediately leave the bathroom and shut the door, or were you pottering about a bit, and the cats were wandering around?

I enlarged it too. It does not look like the way blood would splatter. The spots are too tiny. There are no smears. They could be blood spots if someone was brushing their teeth vigorously with their gums bleeding, so it is blood mixed with water that sprayed out of the mouth. But it would go not just on the top of the cistern but on the adjacent wall and floor as well.

User1836484645R · 20/10/2024 01:21

My husband had something similar happen at random intervals. He would come home to find things like the kettle warm and things moved around.

It turned out that it was his ex who still had a key. They had split up three years before and she had moved over an hour and a half’s drive away.

It does look like tiny blood spots from where there might have been an insect bite which was scratched and then started bleeding. Or bug poo but that would be drier and harder.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 20/10/2024 01:25

Bed bugs for sure.

Years back, a friend of mine thought for a long time that she was losing her marbles, as, for example, food she knew she'd bought just seemed to disappear, along side money she occasionally left on the shelf, her computer monitor and mouse was sometimes in an odd position to how she'd leave it when she left for work, her Venetian blinds in one room at the front of the house would sometimes be completely down (even though she used to pull them up halfway, but she just thought the blinds must've slipped down), the back patio door was unlocked a couple of times (which she could've sworn she'd locked before going to work), and there was just a general sense of her house not feeling right on occasions when she'd been at work all day and came home.

(Her young kids all denied taking money etc, and there was no one else living with them)
Then one day she came home after work and froze as her Venetian blinds were put back up to halfway, but the slats were turned the opposite way to how she'd always turn them.
My friend knew that her kids wouldn't have altered the blinds and she rang me insisting that someone had been in her house, but as there was no sign of a break in, it had to be someone with a key.

Tbh I couldn't imagine anyone doing that, but my friend decided to 'set the scene, ' and so before she dropped her kids to school and carried on to work the next time, she put pop, biscuits etc out on the side (but noted how many biscuits were there and how much pop, she positioned the computer mouse a certain way, and took pics of how she'd left the room (this was all in the kitchen/dining room area) .

Sure enough when she got home that day everything she'd laid as a 'trap' had either moved, been eaten or drank out of! There were only 3 people with a key incase she was ever locked out, her parents and her cousin. My friend knew that her parents wouldn't go into her house without her knowledge, as if they needed to pop in they'd tell her. So that left only one person.

My friend set the scene again for the next couple of days, just to be certain, and sure enough, it was obvious someone was letting themselves into her house. After a few days of this, she went off to work and her parents waited and watched the house outside from a distance. They saw her cousin letting himself into my friends house, and let themselves in after half an hour.
The so called cousin was happily sitting at the computer, eating food, and charging his phones up. His face drained when he saw her parents.

It turned out he'd been letting himself into her house to use her facilities, steal money, etc etc, when he knew the kids were at school and my friend was at work.

He's also been doing this on a regular basis for over 3 years he admitted to when he was caught!
A neighbour had also witnessed him one day going into the house when she knew my friend was away on holiday, but after knocking on the door to ask who he was, he told the neighbour he was looking after the house for his cousin. Her neighbour thought nothing of it and didn't think to mention to my friend about him going into her house.

The lowlife used the excuse when her parents challenged him that he'd 'thought he'd seen someone in the house as he was walking by, so went to investigate'!

The lying bastard!

HP07 · 20/10/2024 01:36

Could it be flea dirt? You could have fleas in your carpets/on your pets who are jumping around and leaving droppings. If the droppings come into contact with water then they will then sort of dissolve into blood spots. It would fit with you wiping over the cistern this morning as it could have still been damp?

Dahliasarebeautiful · 20/10/2024 01:42

I don't think anyone has mentioned it (haven't read all the posts) because they don't want to sound mad and tbh someone coming in is more likely, but have you ever considered you may have a poltergeist?

How old is your house? How old is it? Has anyone died there before? If it's a new build what has it been built on etc?

Fully aware people don't believe but if you have no other explanation?

Outrageous. To think the cousin thought he could get away with it.

These days you don't have to lay traps. Can just put ring camera at the door and cameras around the house and burglar alarms with PIR sensors. Cameras are not particularly expensive to purchase or difficult to set up. They don't have to be wired in. They can be operated using wifi and batteries. You can watch live on your mobile phone as well and have notifications sent to your mobile phone if you are out and about. As well as speak through the camera.
