There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

I might have an explanation. We had similar a few times and finally sussed it out. We had a bathroom cabinet above toilet that had got a metal bottom with a few rust spots. If someone took a long shower condensation built on bottom of cabinet and dripped what looked like blood spots

It backs onto the window with nothing above it. Really wish it was rust though!

The blood spots can easily be explained by the animals but things been moved around is freaky.
Any possibility family /friends with keys to your house were in the area and came into use bathroom, make themselves a tea, maybe they thought it was fine without realising how freaked out you would be?
As far fetched as it sounds, the homeless living in lofts has been known to happen, it is definitely worth having a look around the loft, especially as the weather starts to get colder. I worked in a city centre hotel and the homeless would often manage to sneak in, get themselves food from the kitchens and we would find them asleep in the oddest of places, cupboards and meeting rooms, bin rooms.

merrymelodies · 20/10/2024 00:19

Poltergeist, obviously 🙄

a carbon monoxide leak can have effects on a person’s mental state.

apparently there was a Reddit thread where a poster discovered post-it notes, and it turned out that they’d been writing the notes themselves without realising (I’m not even sure this was genuine as it sounds so far-fetched, but it is supposed to be an actual event, and certainly could be a possibility)

Could the 'blood' be spores from dry rot?

I was going to suggest something like this too. My house has some wood that leaks a weird coloured sap.

The loo blood pic is a bit unclear. Is it actually red OP?

I was the last one to use the bathroom.

He's home, thank god! And going around the house with the dog.

101 are sending someone rough though the dispatcher didn't know when. Think it's going to be a long night!

I know it's a typo but I'm enjoying the idea of 101 sending someone rough!
That'll sort out a potential intruder, haha.
Jokes aside, I hope you solve your mystery and it can be explained away. Could dh be leaving milk out etc?

thorneyislanddoris · 20/10/2024 00:03

Could your cats have brought an injured mouse into your bathroom? Then run around while you were out, bleeding? Have a good look around the bathroom for it hiding somewhere.

Really hoping that's the answer.

Can you take a video around your house before you leave for the day? That would confirm how you left it (milk away, lights off, whatever). The you can check anything odd or different against the video.

Theirishwoman · 20/10/2024 00:26

Christ this would properly freak me out. Hoping the police come out soon!!

Moonflower6 · 20/10/2024 00:27

How old is your property? How big? Any room for rooms you may not know about? A podcast I listen to did a story of Manor House and a room behind fire Place.

There's only my parents and sister who has keys, and they all live locally so I don't think that's it. DH's family live hours away and he is NC with them.

It's browny red - it is 100% splattered dry blood.

If your dh and 101 cannot figure it out, you are going to have to put cameras around the house, internal and external. You can have them motion-activated.

Maybepossibly22 · 20/10/2024 00:28

Goodness, how creepy. Hope it’s something innocent OP

This is a brilliant idea and I will on Monday, thank you!

No hidden rooms- it's just a standard detached new ish build. Not sure exactly how old it is but was built in the last 20 years or so.

Just ordered more from Amazon.

He's still going around but has found nothing so far. Dog is confused but settled if that makes sense, so I don't think there's anyone in the house ATM.

Have you heard any strange noises lately? Anything during the night or early morning?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/10/2024 00:40

I'd want police to take a sample of the blood for testing.
And, if a match comes up with someone long dead I'd be outta there so fast.... 🫣

Lived here for almost four years without an issue and changed the locks when I moved in. I do have an ex lived with me when I very first moved but I got the keys back from him and haven't seen him since!

He could have made copies he didn't tell you about. I'd be changing the locks again.

But if you are 100% sure it’s blood then you’re saying someone definitely has been in the house. You’re sure it’s not an animal. So you are definite that someone has been in? This is very worrying and I don’t know what I’d do but I think I wouldn’t be staying there. I hope you got the cameras on fast delivery.
I have just got into bed and thought let me look at mumsnet to try to relax a bit…

I would check with them. My sister used to have a spare key to our house. She used to let herself in if she came around and we weren't in. She refused to give the key back to me. When we moved though I had to hand all the keys back to the rental agency. She's not had a spare key since.

If there's blood then I would call the police too. At the very least ask them to do a sweep of the property.

The police won’t be remotely interested in this. They barely come out for anything besides serious crime anymore

Have you wiped a bit of the blood to see could it be dirt/dust/rust anything else? Extractor fans drop dirt.
im stuck on the fact that you’re saying you’re totally sure it’s blood. And yet the implications if that is the case are very frightening
