He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

Is this a joke?

Mumistiredzzzz · 06/10/2024 17:12

Erm. Ok. Think maybe you made it weird?

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:13

No!

My point was we were having a nice meal and him calling the wasp a moron caused other diners to look at him like he was mad. I was embarrassed

In a restaurant? I'd be pissed if something ruined my £8 glass of wine!
But he's your boyfriend and if he's giving you a bad feeling...

purpleme12 · 06/10/2024 17:13

🤣 Oh dear

I didn't say anything but there was something about the 'display' that left me feeling weird after it

Exactly what I would do. Wasps are morons

WhatsInTheRug · 06/10/2024 17:14

Outdoors in this weather??

Pippa12 · 06/10/2024 17:14

I think he was very restrained! Surely the couple wasn’t offended at him calling the wasp a moron?

DaftyLass · 06/10/2024 17:14

Did the wasp say it's feelings were hurt?

SophiaJ8 · 06/10/2024 17:14

Wasps are morons, I’m with DH

It's tongue and cheek but in a way - it seemed am angry reaction.

steff13 · 06/10/2024 17:14

Rescuing it and then giving it a pep talk does not seem all that angry to me. I'm in the US so possibly the word has a different usage there than it does here but here "moron" just means someone who is stupid. Which landing in a glass of wine is, for a wasp.

WhatsInTheRug · 06/10/2024 17:14

And 'looking into each others eyes'??

Foxblue · 06/10/2024 17:14

Is it the word moron or how he said it? I think we need more info here...
Moron is a light hearted 'you idiot' saying where I'm from - maybe I'm missing something.

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:14

Did the wasp say it's feelings were hurt?

Yes, it has been maligned all it's life

Idontevenknowmyname · 06/10/2024 17:15

A wasp in my wine would be called a hell of a lot worse than that. And then crushed on the table in its drunken stupor. Moron was very mild. Unless he hollered it at the top of his voice, but some people really don’t like wasps.
Other people’s opinions really don’t matter here op.

I actually think that's fairly amusing, especially him giving the wasp a pep talk.
Are you quite an uptight person?

MrsMitford3 · 06/10/2024 17:15

Surely moron was used in the heat of the moment and the pep talk more than made up for any offence caused 🐝

Octopies · 06/10/2024 17:15

Unless he seemed genuinely enraged the wasp had landed there, I'd think it was sweet he cared enough to help it and help it along it's way. I'm an animal lover, but not sure you can verbally abuse insects! 😂

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it
