He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

Rescuing it and then giving it a pep talk does not seem all that angry to me. I'm in the US so possibly the word has a different usage there than it does here but here "moron" just means someone who is stupid. Which landing in a glass of wine is, for a wasp.

That’s what moron means here too but on Mumsnet any phrase that has a history in a medical diagnosis is frowned upon.
In real life people use these words and very few people are offended - the only words that we don’t use are one beginning with S that describes stiff unusable muscles. And one beginning with R that refers to an IQ below a certain number. And to be honest there are probably plenty of people out there that still use those.

Is that you Sharon? Only ye olde Mumsnetters will get this.

Does he T-Rex in Asda?

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:24

He yelled you moron! While gesticulating yes

But it was followed with a pep talk so maybe I'm being too harsh

I think you are bonkers.

I had diversity training a few weeks ago and we were told that moron was no longer acceptable.

It's tongue and cheek but in a way - it seemed am angry reaction.

Tongue in cheek.

toopytoo · 06/10/2024 17:28

You were looking into each other's eyes? Were you talking, did you look away when cutting your food?

Aha!

We're you given a reason why?

Probably you.

Differentstarts · 06/10/2024 17:30

I think it depends how loud, dramatic and over the top he was being. If someone causes a scene it is embarrassing

Hereforaglance · 06/10/2024 17:30

Called lany a wasp worse then that lol didn't know they where so easily offended did the wasp want yo speak to a manager or need counselling after this distressing incident

Why exactly?

And does the same apply to idiot or lunatic?

It was so long ago that these words passed into common language from medicine that they should no longer be offensive.

The other words I referenced were still used in a medical context (and may still be I don’t know) in our lifetime and so are offensive

Yes I felt embarrassed.

Obviously he didn't expect a wasp to land in his wine, but I don't think I'd be calling wasps morons. Clearly much worse could have been said of the wasp, based on the curses up thread.

i got stung by a wasp once for no reason, just minding my own business walking to my front door. I called it every name under the sun! I’m normally a ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’ kind of person but there’s a limit!

Needmorelego · 06/10/2024 17:32

😂😂😂
This is the sort of thing I would do. Although I would probably call the wasp a dingbat.
Who cares what the other people thought. None of their beeswax (semi pun intended.....).
I mean some people might have thought I was telling off a tree the other day. I wasn't. I was telling off a squirrel who threw a conker at me.

TillyKister · 06/10/2024 17:33

Not many threads baffle me on here, but this one has.

OP you sound very uptight.

Sodthebloodymealplan · 06/10/2024 17:33

I'd have probably dropped a f-bomb in before moron. In deference to OP's sensitivity, I am holding back from typing it in full.

And if my H did this, I would just laugh at him.
Everyone likes to get a bit of buzz from a glass of wine!

I wouldn't use the word lunatic.

Surely most people wouldn't these days?

💯 this.

I can just see how this poor partner's life will be miserable going forward.
Please save him by finishing with him.

Noone in life deserves this.

BunnyLake · 06/10/2024 17:35

Was it Basil Fawlty hitting a car territory?

Giving it a pep talk after would have made me feel quite soppy actually.

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:33

Yes. Yes they would.
And I would argue it is far less offensive than using a shortened form of the name of mental health conditions that many people also still use.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/10/2024 17:36

It seems quite a calm response compared to leaping up and running round the table or trying to swat it with his shoe which other diners I've been out with have done.

Do you live somewhere warm? On holiday? Or have you been brooding on this reaction since August.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 06/10/2024 17:36

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:24

Yes he's a bit eccentric

Most of the time I don't mind, other times I just want a quiet under the radar meal

The wasp had other ideas

I’m struggling a bit to see what left you with a weird feeling about it. Was it that he called the wasp a name? Or that he attracted the attention of someone on a different table? Did you feel that he was too aggressive for you? Or did you feel embarrassed that someone might have been judging him as being a bit odd?

I think he sounds quite fun. If any part of you is feeling embarrassed about his basic personality, do you think you might be better suited to someone a bit more…. beige?

Yep. Same for idiot and lunatic. Also cretin. The reason being that these were medical terms that have become misused.

I can’t see who would be offended myself

Anawi · 06/10/2024 17:37

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:19

Maybe a PP is right

Maybe the diners thought he was calling me a moron, hence the response

That was my first thought, that I bet they thought he was talking to tou and were offended on your behalf!
