He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

Would you have preferred he drown it in a sadistic way?

StaunchMomma · 06/10/2024 17:38

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:13

No!

My point was we were having a nice meal and him calling the wasp a moron caused other diners to look at him like he was mad. I was embarrassed

Are you always so concerned about what strangers think?

Nice loyalty to your DH 🙄

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/10/2024 17:38

Yes he's a bit eccentric

Sounds like you are a good match !

user98786 · 06/10/2024 17:38

After calling it "my lovely"?

Depressedbarbie · 06/10/2024 17:38

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:15

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it

To me it's not nearly that strong

CustardySergeant · 06/10/2024 17:38

I thought the expected response to an insect in your wine was remove it and say "Spit it out!".

Tophelleborine · 06/10/2024 17:38

I'd be amused by this, but I'm also verbally (not physically) abusive to insects from time to time.

My friend once called a bramble patch a cunt, which made me laugh my head off.

JuvenileBigfoot · 06/10/2024 17:38

I was at lunch with a friend a couple of months ago. Wasp arrived to harass us. We both told it to fuck off. Friend flapped the drinks menu at it and actually threw it into my face. My nose bled. The wasp remained to laugh at us.

You would have actually died.

I’m struggling a bit to see what left you with a weird feeling about it. Was it that he called the wasp a name? Or that he attracted the attention of someone on a different table? Did you feel that he was too aggressive for you? Or did you feel embarrassed that someone might have been judging him as being a bit odd?

I think he sounds quite fun. If any part of you is feeling embarrassed about his basic personality, do you think you might be better suited to someone a bit more…. beige?

The truth is that I didn't date for ages after my last relationship because I found most men TOO beige

Then I met him and found him quite exciting and eccentric. I just sometimes wish he'd be 10% beige because I don't always like to attract attention.

I can't build a boyfriend so I probably need to accept it.

Ok that is quite funny

It's tongue and cheek but in a way - it seemed am angry reaction.

I think an angry reaction to a wasp in your wine is perfectly understandable. I would have been tempted to call it some far worse things than moron.

usernother · 06/10/2024 17:40

I'd think that was really funny. Especially the pep talk.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 06/10/2024 17:37

Yep. Same for idiot and lunatic. Also cretin. The reason being that these were medical terms that have become misused.

I can’t see who would be offended myself

It’s an odd stance to take I think.

Language changes a lot over time and I would wager if you asked the majority of people what the meaning of these words was they would be very surprised to hear they were previously a medical diagnosis.

ShittyTitty · 06/10/2024 17:40

I would have called the wasp a cunt.

Probably best if we aren't friends.

CherryDrops89 · 06/10/2024 17:40

This is really making me laugh 😂

BiscuitlyBoyle · 06/10/2024 17:40

My mistake, moron and idiot aren’t on the list, but cretin is. I can’t see why moron and idiot wouldn’t be as they are in the same bracket in my opinion.

The list is attached, flagged as sensitive.

I have a friend who constantly calls her dog a wanker. It’s daft attributing human “qualities” to animals.

Hereforaglance · 06/10/2024 17:41

Stop serious i howling here

As always, it's the intent, not the actual words

PennyCrayon1 · 06/10/2024 17:43

It gave you the ick. That’s all. It would probably give me the ick too.

Puddlewoman · 06/10/2024 17:43

You have the ick it's irreversable im afraid. Nothing for it now but to end the relationship, better luck next time.

Perhaps the other people didn't realise what he was talking to?

Are we not allowed to say ‘it’s bedlam in here’ anymore either? I still say idiot, moron and lunatic. Not on a regular basis but every now and then. I’m not going to stop saying them.
