She bought the same coat as me.

I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

It sounds like a nice coat, where did you get it? 👀

ash677x · 12/09/2024 20:48

If all you are worried about in life is your friend wearing the same coat as you you need to grow up! Primary school drama.

YorkshireIndie · 12/09/2024 20:49

Just shows you have good taste

People can worry about more than one thing at a time. It's not a 1 or nothing kind of thing.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/09/2024 20:50

You should be flattered! She thinks you’ve got good taste.

Lavender14 · 12/09/2024 20:50

With respect I think you need to grow up a bit op! I couldn't get worked up over this! I know a coat is a big part of an outfit but they can be styled very differently depending on the rest of the outfit. How often do you see your friend? Also please can we see the coat, I'm also curious!

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/09/2024 20:52

What type of coat is it? If it’s a purple fluffy bomber jacket or something similarly niche then it’s odd she copied you but if it’s in the more generic category eg it’s a black north face then I wouldn’t think twice. I unintentionally have the exact same jacket as my best friend and my teenage niece! If someone else I know bought it too I wouldn’t think twice.

GoodVibesHere · 12/09/2024 20:54

I think it's a really weird thing for your friend to do, it's quite rude really.

mushpush · 12/09/2024 20:55

Honestly unless it's something designer or limited edition, it's going to be bought by lots and lots of people!

You can't claim the rights to a H&M mac 🤷🏻‍♀️

Villagetoraiseachild · 12/09/2024 20:56

It's rude. She could have asked you if you'd mind as a courtesy, especially if you move in the same circles. There are plenty of coats out there. Next time she admires something you wear and asks where from, stay mysterious!
I can see how it might take the shine off a happy purchase.

This! Please tell us, we promise not to turn to where you are.

namechangetheworld · 12/09/2024 20:57

You sound like my five year old whining that her sister is 'copying' her. Thousands upon thousands of people will be out in the world wearing the very same coat. Get a grip.

Flashcardsagain · 12/09/2024 20:57

YABU for not providing the link so this can become THE mumsnet coat 2024/25.

leopardski · 12/09/2024 20:59

It’s a coat! My goodness. Me and my friends frequently buy the same things if we like it, share links etc.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/09/2024 21:00

For some reason with a coat it would annoy me a bit. It would be so obvious for the whole winter season if you met up or in photos that it's the same. Unless it really is fairly tastefully generic, like a black peacoat, or puffer coat.
But is also taken it as a compliment. I'd say it's a bit weird to do it right in front of you. I've done that with beauty products and makeup or other bits but not really clothes. Unless it's something like tights, vests, knickers. Not that I'd be that obsessed with needing guidance on panties.
For some reason copying my knickers wouldn't bother me. Haha.

thehungryteacher · 12/09/2024 21:00

Oh god this would be the ultimate compliment to me!

I love twinning my friends!

MargotMoon · 12/09/2024 21:01

Twinsies! 👯‍♂️

Exactly this. I'm desperado for a new coat and have no clue where to start 😂

I’m sure it’s coming, it’s a dastardly plan from a canny marketing department 😉

I feel a bit annoyed

Why on earth would you feel annoyed? Confused
I would feel flattered that someone liked my taste.

TomatoSandwiches · 12/09/2024 21:03

Let's see it and then we can decide 😂

ClementineChurchill · 12/09/2024 21:04

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness" (Oscar Wilde).

Not sure why you mind, OP, to be honest. No one ever liked my fashion choices, let alone copied them!
