She bought the same coat as me.

I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

I really wouldn’t care . I was admiring a friends bag last year and she bought me an identical one for my big birthday.

IDontHateRainbows · 12/09/2024 21:24

If I love love loved a coat a friend was wearing I'd probably order it on the sly and be sure to wear a different one when meeting up. I wouldn't be ordering it there and then. That bit is weird.

No.one has rights to a coat though

RampantIvy · 12/09/2024 21:24

Please can the posters who would be annoyed that someone else has the same taste as them please explain why they would be annoyed that a friend has bought the same item.

I just don't get it.

Unless the coat is a very distinctive style or colour I daresay that most people wouldn't even notice that they were the same.

EmeraldRoses · 12/09/2024 21:25

Put a picture of the coat on here I might get it aswell 🤣

Daisy May, is that you ??

UltramarineViolet · 12/09/2024 21:27

@rampantivy Hard to explain really but a coat for me would be quite a 'big purchase' and likely carefully considered and I would expect to be wearing said coat for several years. The last thing I would want would be to be 'twinning' with a friend every time we meet up. As others have commented I would be less bothered if it was a blouse or jeans as would be easier to avoid wearing it at the same time. If it was an extremely generic coat I might be less bothered but I'm guessing that is not the case as friend is hardly likely to get excited about a black cagoule!

I don't get it either, it seems bizarre.

thursdaymurderclub · 12/09/2024 21:22

it depends if its just the coat! or does she have form for copying whatever you have?

i had a friend who did exactly that, if i bought something, she went straight out and bought the same thing, just the newer upgraded version. it got to the point that i purposely bought some rubbish to see how far i could push her..

we are no longer friends

She has copied in the past but it’s more house things so I wasn’t particularly bothered.

It just annoyed me when she would get annoyed when I couldn’t remember the exact place I bought something from. Like I have two clear plain globe lights in the dinning room, I did an entire renovation so no I don’t remember where I bought them from 10 months later, but there’s a billion others out there the exact same.

That would irritate me, I’d think ‘go out and source out your own coat’. At least she did it openly not turned up say next week in it and you realised what she’d done. No that would tick me off.

Backtoblack1 · 12/09/2024 21:28

I want this coat!

You don’t have a seven figure job do you. 😂

ps the giveaway is you’ve completely misunderstood what the poster was saying.

It’s actually you who has misunderstood, OP was being sarcastic.

Sallyanne92 · 12/09/2024 21:29

I can see why you would be annoyed as it can awkward meeting up in the same coat especially if its quite distinctive. There's not much you can do about it and your friend doesn't seem to think its an issue so id focus on it being a compliment you have good taste, id probably make it a bit of a joke like "its my turn to wear the coat" next time you meet up

I think I would just tell her it was a gift from now on or something.

It sounds like a nice coat, where did you get it? 👀

😂

EI12 · 12/09/2024 21:32

Next time buy Max Mara (the real one, not week-end) and bankrupt her! Then discretely return it to the shop and hey presto you have your first down payment and she is bankrupt and you are happy.

imgonnadowild · 12/09/2024 21:34

Just to point out throughout the years that yes other friends have copied me and me them. I bought a stunning lipstick after I saw a friend of a friend wear it, I would never have picked that colour on my own and the amount of compliments I get each time I wear it - never experienced that and my safe nude colours before 😂.

Because it’s a coat it’s a big purchase. You might buy a new top but you’re not wearing it every day, but a coat you wear most days. So yes I don’t like that she blatantly copied me with it. I’m trying really hard with my clothes and appearance after letting myself go really bad due to a breakup and being in a terrible job.

I'd be bloody annoyed too.
Had a teenage friend that did this all the time.
It's not the done thing.

Yes having my friends be bankrupt is the dream.

On at least a million you can surely buy many coats?

This is absolutely pathetic I'm actually laughing at your "problems" hahaha

VibeVanguard · 12/09/2024 21:37

Yeah this would annoy me too.

my friend did this frequently and I always found it irritating.

Chillimuma · 12/09/2024 21:37

Link pls

RampantIvy · 12/09/2024 21:38

Such a first world problem.

Compash · 12/09/2024 21:38

I get it. I think it was weird and provocative of her to order it right there and then in front of you. What message was she trying to give you, I wonder? 🤔 That you can't stop her being enmeshed with you if she chooses? That she thinks you're her Bestie Fwend and you just think of her as A Friend? As a one-off, maybe not a problem, but it sounds like she has previous about the globe lights etc.

A psychologist would have a better idea of why, but maybe it's like animals don't like being observed closely because that's what predators do? I know she's not going to lunge across the restaurant table and start devouring you (UNLESS SHE IS!), but it's generally unnerving to be closely scrutinised.

Reverse psychology, next time you buy something and she doesn't copy it, start demanding why, what's wrong with it, doesn't she like it? 😁
