She bought the same coat as me.

I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

Well if there is one thing I think you need to rethink, its your confidence. You clearly have good taste if she wants to copy you, no matter how "not ok" it is for her to do it.

I suspect the problem here is that you look far better than you think you do and your friend is jealous, plain and simple.

I am trying to work on myself ☺️

I have a new and much better job (no more crying on a Sunday night now) and I’m over my breakup. I just stop caring about how I looked for a good 2/3 years.

It’s so rude and teenagery and would annoy me as there are thousands of coats for her to choose from. Why does she have to copy you and take the shine off your new coat? I understand some people aren’t confident with their own choices but it’s so rude to get your phone out to order and not even ask if you mind. Rude! Def go to charity shops or designer OP. Or say it was an end of line, gift or can’t remember next time.

Having said that four friends have bought the same sunhat as me but it makes us laugh when we meet up and looks quite funny.

I was going to guess purple!! And I was also going to say if it’s purple it’s really annoying because you will look like a bunch of grapes going anywhere together. 🍇

Thankfully I only copied a friend of a friend who I really don’t see very often, not even once a year now so I just looked like a solo grape when I wore it.

How you put your clothes together makes you unique. If you think ownership makes you unique, unless you’re buying or making custom clothes you’re absolutely not unique at all.

I don’t think ownership makes you unique I just don’t like being a sheep and following the crowd.

I think it's a really weird thing for your friend to do, it's quite rude really.

Oh for goodness' sake . You both sound about 12.
Correction: ALL the comments going on about how rude, she's doing it on purpose to diss you sound stonkingly immature. Dress is NOT a freaking competition.

Seeingisbelievin · 12/09/2024 22:05

Shocked that anyone would be upset by this. I wouldn’t give a shit I’d just be chuffed someone liked my taste.

Are you annoyed because she's bought a size or two smaller than you and will look better in it?

Nasty!

It sounds like a nice coat, where did you get it? 👀

My favourite comment

DillDanding · 12/09/2024 22:09

Who would do that? I’d never buy the same coat as a friend, it’s just not the done thing. And you’d look like absolute tools if you went out together and both wore it.

Oh sorry! I misread that. I had imagined the coat was purple so when I saw “ mauvish” I leaped to conclusions!
Op it’s great you are getting your mojo back after a tough time. Try to just take it as a compliment because it’s either that or jealousy.

MissFancyDay · 12/09/2024 22:10

OP this is one of those strange things that seems to get people on Mumsnet competing about how unbothered they would be, but in real life most people would get a bit miffed about.

She was rude and I am not surprised that you are upset.

Such a strange comment. I use the underground every single day and my sister would cry and have a panic attack if she ever had to get one. I’m not like wow I’m shocked anyone would be upset about an underground carriage.

Because I can actually comprehend that human beings think and feel stuff differently. Also I’ve never said I was upset, I said I was annoyed - they are different emotions.

I’m never going to post the coat because I don’t want opinions on it. You know there are people on here that are so bitter and nasty that I could post a coat of their dreams and they’d still rip it to pieces and how horrendous it looks and how ugly I’ll look wearing it.

My confidence is low, I don’t need it getting kicked another six feet under.

You need to work on that confidence sweetheart - that's a bigger issue than the coat! Would you consider counselling? It sounds like you have been through a lot. Pay no heed to the challenged of thinking x

I’m not brave enough for a purple coat 😂, maybe next year and thank you

I can empathise, went through something similar. Was getting over the very traumatic ending of my very abusive marriage, while in a job I loathed. I ended up seriously ill as a result. Looking good was the last thing on my mind. When I got myself together and started taking a pride in myself again it would have pissed me right off if I was looking in the mirror and feeling happy, only for Copy Cat to buy everything I had carefully chosen.

And, I dont know about you (obviously I did spot the sarcasm earlier!) but money isnt something I can freely just chuck around so when I buy something its a treat, its special. I cant pull my phone out and order something no matter how much I want it. So to act like something I may have saved up for can just be bought on a whim would take another layer of shine off it.

May not be logical but feelings arent.

MermaidMummy06 · 12/09/2024 22:19

I understand you feel the uniqueness of your coat has gone & you will hesitate wearing it now. People also like to comment & poke fun if you turn up in the same clothing.

If it helps, OP, I know how you feel. Except mine is much worse - it's my elderly mother! She often buys what I'm wearing. I turned up recently for a family gathering wearing current fashion pants.... DM was wearing the exact same pair. She'd asked me where I got them. It frustrates me because I can't wear them to gatherings anymore, as it bothers me because people like to comment on it, implying I'm copying her!!

And only men would post about feeling inadequate about penis size. Men and women care about different things. Whats your point?

Oldfatandfrumpy · 12/09/2024 22:21

The correct answer (if you don't want people to buy it) is 'oh this? I found it in the wardrobe, can you believe I completely forgot about it?!'
