I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

I don't think it's that bad really, I'd probably be quite flattered. But then I wouldn't care if my friend was wearing the same coat as me at the same time because I'm not really bothered what other people think 🤣

It would bother me too OP. Especially as she has form. I have a friend who used to do this but we were teens, she has since grown out of it.

I can't remotely relate to this. I find it really odd that so many people think like this, it would honestly never occur to me and I can't imagine my friends being like this either. I wouldn't think twice about two people wearing the same coat together if I saw them no idea why anyone would or why you wouldn't just say 'oh, God we'll look a right pair of twats together if you buy it too' if that's what you really think.

I had a friend who used to do this in our teens. The worst thing was when she copied my perfume. I couldn’t afford another as well so whenever we went anywhere we created a thick fug of this particular fragrance which got commented on more than once. It was most embarrassing. Thankfully one night a guy we knew got drunk and outspoken and asked her if she felt lame always copying and ran through a list of reasons why he thought she did it. She stopped. 🤣

No, I’d say we’re pretty much the same size and height too - she’s maybe an inch shorter than me. I’m also not fatphobic and automatically assume because someone’s bigger they couldn’t look good which is clearly what you’re implying.

But tbh it’s not really a thought that crosses my mind because I don’t think I look nice ever, so a friend wearing a bin bag I’ll think looks nicer than me.

OP on a 7 figure salary you were being wildly unreasonable to not offer to buy the coat for your friend. If my millionaire mate watched me get out my phone to purchase my own copycat coat I'd be majorly fucked off 🤣

I ended up with the same colour coat as my sister a couple of years ago, very similar styles too. If we were together people would say "here comes the mustard sisters" 🤣🤣 Just roll with it OP, honestly there's bigger things to be miffed about.

If you showed her a new boyfriend and she went "ooh where did you get him?" and went looking for a lookalike, then I'd understand the annoyance.

I’m never going to post the coat because I don’t want opinions on it. You know there are people on here that are so bitter and nasty that I could post a coat of their dreams and they’d still rip it to pieces and how horrendous it looks and how ugly I’ll look wearing it.

My confidence is low, I don’t need it getting kicked another six feet under.

@imgonnadowild Isn’t the whole point that because it’s a big purchase for some people they might only want to get their one shot right and buy what they’ve already seen on somebody else?

Unless you’re couture levels of spending, there will always be someone with the same thing as you. it’s not a big deal.

Maybe I’m ND but I’ve never liked people copying me. I would never dream of secretly copying someone else let alone getting my phone out then and there and purchasing something my friend had. I like being unique and having my own style and actually get put off items/clothing if I see the same thing everywhere!

Well if there is one thing I think you need to rethink, its your confidence. You clearly have good taste if she wants to copy you, no matter how "not ok" it is for her to do it.

I suspect the problem here is that you look far better than you think you do and your friend is jealous, plain and simple.

There's some items of clothing that really wouldn't matter (I sent a link to some leggings I was wearing to my friend just the other day so she could buy them based on my recommendation) but it's a coat - chances are, if you meet up anywhere outside of your homes then you'll both be wearing it.
