She bought the same coat as me.

I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

QUOTE: I bought a stunning lipstick after I saw a friend of a friend wear it, I would never have picked that colour on my own and the amount of compliments I get each time I wear it - never experienced that and my safe nude colours before 😂.

I wonder if your friend whose lipstick you copied was P'd off with you.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 16/09/2024 14:49

@Goodtogossip you can't see a difference between a lipstick and a coat, no?

CrowleyKitten · 16/09/2024 18:52

allmyliesaretrue · 15/09/2024 17:52

Well she should have picked her own style of coat, not copycat her friend's! It's a dick move!

it is her own style of coat if she liked it and bought it.
if you're that worried about someone owning and wearing the same garment, take up making your own clothes or get them specially made. you could buy from car boots and charity sales, and it would be less likely than buying current clothing from the high street or internet. they make thousands upon thousands of the same item. so if you're buying from current ranges, it's inevitable that someone else has it too, and has just as much right to wear it as you.

that's the only way you'll know nobody else owns the same item of clothing, and never have to worry about someone wearing the same thing.
but if you buy from regular shops and websites, sometimes people will wear the same thing as you.

20 years ago, a colleague and I used to go shopping together. We ended up with a couple of the same outfits. It amused us to wear them to work on the same day. Yes, probably childish, but we liked very similar stuff.

my best friend and I once bought the same tops from topshop. same style, same colour. I think it was when their plain tops had a cheaper price if you bought two, and we both really liked the burgundy vest top, and we went in together to get the cheaper price on them. and there were a few times we both wore it at the same time, and we never thought anything of it.

You're completely missing the point. It's not about A N Other Stranger wearing the same coat - it's about your mate Mabel going out alongside you wearing the same one!

I buy from independents and I wear the coats for years, so I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear the same coat.

DisabledDemon · 16/09/2024 21:10

There’s only so many styles of coat in the world!

why does this bother people? it's a coat! A friend of mine and I with some similar tastes have had the same clothes on a number of occasions, and it's just not a big deal.
when you buy an item of clothing you like, you don't buy the rights to ban anyone you know owning and wearing the same thing.
hell, on one occasion, she lent me some boots of hers she liked so much she bought two different colours in the style, both wearing them on the same day, because she wanted me to see how comfortable they are (roughly the same size feet) and I later bought some on ebay in the colour she wears most, as she encouraged me to, and we've worn them at the same time on a number of occasions when they're the best boots for our plans and the weather.

I genuinely don't see the issue. these aren't one off garments. they are mass produced, and sometimes someone else will be wearing the same thing, and I don't see why anyone would care.

the only issue I can see is if you pick up the wrong coat and go home with someone else's keys instead of your own in the pocket.

Creamteasandbumblebees · 17/09/2024 17:39

I'm with you OP, I'd be cross too.
I've had it happen to me in the past, one friend in particular was very bad at copying everything I bought. I don't find it flattering, I find it annoying.

In the end when she asked where I'd bought something from I'd cheekiky say 'I'd ather not say, I don't want you buying the same thing!'

She got a bit huffy a few times but it definitely worked she stopped asking and copying!

JillMW · 17/09/2024 18:10

I went to London by train, travelled on the underground and then another train to P!ymouth. Every woman regardless of age, shape or size was wearing the same style coat. I think they all copied you.

Mermaidsarereal · 17/09/2024 18:18

I have a friend who does exactly the same, copies loads of things that I buy. It is annoying but just take it as a positive that you have good taste!

Lovelysummerdays · 17/09/2024 18:24

I’m pretty sure every other woman I meet in winter is wearing a Didrikson, it’s a bit cold and wet where I am and they are really good coats! I’d struggle to be bothered about this you either have good taste or have found a classic coat.

GreatGardenstuff · 17/09/2024 19:25

A friend at work did this, but bought it in a different colour. It always made us smile when we turned up at a customer meeting in coordinating coats. I think her mum then bought one too, it was a lovely coat!

YerArseInParsley · 17/09/2024 21:50

Just make sure all your mutual friends see you in it first so they can compliment YOU.

If you don't understand, no amount of explaining is going to make you understand.

I would never wear someone else's shoes, nor vice versa.

Who said it was their biggest worry in life???!

Pherian · 17/09/2024 23:57

I need to know your secrets for solving every problem we mortals could possibly have that you have time to worry about this :)

Tell your friend they look great when you see them and move on with your life ❤️

imgonnadowild · 12/09/2024 21:15

Yes. Thankfully I skip to my 7 figure job holding hands with bunnies and kittens every day. I’ve never had a problem or issue in my life.

Whats also very primary school is the answer of “is that all you have to worry about!?”. We’re allowed to post about any issues we have, from the most privileged first world problem to the darkest unimaginable problem. You aren’t the gatekeeper of AIBU on Mumsnet.

7/8 figure paying job and you buy off the rack..eww. How basic of you. At that level of income I‘d expect made to measure pieces. 😂

Also: has no one ever told you that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit…

No-one has ever told me that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. That's a new one to me.

1989whome · 18/09/2024 09:02

I have actually done this recently 😂 my cousin had a lovely hoodie so I ordered the same, no drama though, She sent me the link. It's not an exclusive item just for you. No doubt alot of people have that coat, take it as a compliment and move on.

Streetcornerchoir · 18/09/2024 11:20

I think it’s odd when people repeatedly copy you, which it sounds like your friend does. I’ve had friends like this that also pretend they didn’t know you had the same item after asking where you got it or, in one case, taking a photo of it in my house! It’s weird like they lack their own ideas or something. I wouldn’t be overly bothered about a coat they were upfront about ordering though unless you see them all the time, just enjoy it when you’re not together and have a joke about it when you are.

TENSsion · 18/09/2024 11:26

Whenever I meet up with my best friend, we always turn up with at least one item that’s the exact same as each other only in different colours (I always go for blue/ purple/ green and she goes for more red/pink/ orange).

We love it!

Verv · 18/09/2024 11:39

If i find/buy something nice that i think would be up my best mates street i send her the link and say "you have to get this!"

So far we have same pants, same jeans and same bras. We're the same shape so if she finds a bra that really hoiks them up, she sends me the link and the instruction to buy as well.
We've also had the same coat but in different colours.

Doesnt and wouldnt bother me at all with any friend.

Imagine being this miserable of a person.

And who shames anyone for “buying off the rack”

You’ve probably never experienced a friend copying you because you don’t have any.
