Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

Who or what is MM?

DilemmaDelilah · 14/08/2024 20:17

I really don't know who most of them are - and I really don't care!

HappierTimesAhead · 14/08/2024 20:17

YABU because how do you know they are pretending? I seem to absorb a lot of news about celebrities without even being conscious I am doing it whereas my dad would genuinely have no idea who Molly Mae is. He's not pretending, he simply knows nothing about celebs

FuzzyPuffling · 14/08/2024 20:17

Why under 60? Do people over 60 not read the news or watch tv? Do they suddenly become immune to tat?

Molly-Mae I am thinking! Broke up with Tommy Fury. Social media explosion!

Catza · 14/08/2024 20:18

I know who the Kardashians are (but only became aware of them very recently) but when I queue for a checkout, I often mindlessly glance at the celeb magazine and can't help but think I have no idea who those people are and why anyone would choose to pay to read about them.
It is absolutely plausible that someone who doesn't have a TV and only uses social media for their specific interests (which, for me is design and art with an occasional dog meme) wouldn't know any of the current celebrities.

Sirzy · 14/08/2024 20:18

I don’t think it’s cool, but in most cases I haven’t heard or them or if I have know the name and nothing more. Simply not something that interests me

Shawdee · 14/08/2024 20:20

Who cares?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 14/08/2024 20:21

I agree with you about some celebrities. I find it hard to believe anyone just hasn't heard of the Kardashians.

But I genuinely only have a vague awareness of Mollie-Mae - I couldn't have told you why she was famous, and I hadn't heard of her partner. I don't think Mollie-Mae has quite the same global recognition as the Kardashians.

I wouldn't go onto a thread about her to just respond with "who?" though.

Tulip8 · 14/08/2024 20:21

But I don't watch Love Island so how would I know who she is? I know from reading sky news breaking news alert!

TheFlis · 14/08/2024 20:21

I have heard vaguely of Molly Mae but no idea why she is supposed to be famous or who she is dating. And I am wayyy under 60.

Exactly. I have no idea why people get so invested in these ridiculous tabloid fodder relationships with a couple of fame hungry Z listers.

HappierTimesAhead · 14/08/2024 20:21

Also, someone might have heard 'Kardashians' but literally know nothing about them or even their level of fame so if they said, "Who are they, I have no idea " then they would be telling the truth. They may not even know why they are famous, what they look like, what their names are. It would still be fairly accurate for them to say they don't know who they are.

What I genuinely don't understand is why it bothers people when people say they've never heard of a celeb (whether they are lying or not).

Fimbledore · 14/08/2024 20:21

I'm in my fifties and don't know who many current "celebrities" are , including MollyMae. I saw on a thread about her earlier that she was on love island, but I've never watched it.
I'm not pretending to be cool.

loropianalover · 14/08/2024 20:21

I often imagine the smug little chuckle they do and how funny they feel after commenting ‘sorry… WHO?? 🤣 how is this news!!’ for the fifth time in one evening.

Blablablabladibla · 14/08/2024 20:22

I find it impossible that you can't work out why people do that.

They don't want to be associated with following those celebrities. Or they literally don't know them.

Katherineryan1986 · 14/08/2024 20:22

When you put MM my first thought was Meghan Markle 🤷‍♀️ I truly haven't a clue who Molly Mae or Tommy Fury are and I am under 60

FuzzyPuffling · 14/08/2024 20:22

I thought MM was Meghan Markle.
Or Miriam Margolyes.

I don't think anyone who says they haven't heard of a celeb is saying it because they think it's 'cool'. They are just stating a fact.

twoforj0y · 14/08/2024 20:18

Molly-Mae I am thinking! Broke up with Tommy Fury. Social media explosion!

Never heard of either of them.
Honestly.

Offcom · 14/08/2024 20:23

Everyone must know who this person is

If they don't know they are pretending

The reason they are pretending is so they can impress other people

That's quite a wild thought process!

5128gap · 14/08/2024 20:23

I'd imagine it's a reaction to the "Molly and Tommy OMG!! Broken heart emoji" posts that make out like minor celebs are household names that we should all be thinking of immediately their first names are mentioned. They want to indicate that the person who's posted it is overdramatising a non event.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/08/2024 20:23

I genuinely don't know who Mally Mae is - I thought you were putting MM for Meghan Markle. I am well under 60 btw.

MonsteraMama · 14/08/2024 20:23

I'm sorry everyone is talking about Molly Mae and I genuinely, truly have no idea who that is. I'm not trying to be cool, I really don't know!

As for the Kardashian Klan. I imagine people just want to emphasise how much they don't give a shit about what they're doing by pretending they've never heard of them.
