Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

If you didn’t watch love island and don’t have social media you’re not going to know who Molly-mae is. Even if you did watch love island if you don’t have social media you aren’t going to be thinking about them years after the show… so YABU to suggest EVERYONE is ‘pretending’ to not know.

However I agree 100% some people comment ‘who?’ Just to appear above the whole reality star stuff. It’s on par with ‘well said 👏🏻.’ 😂

Cookerhood · 14/08/2024 20:52

I would bother replying "Who?" but I had honestly never heard of either of them until today. Why would I, I've never seen Love Island or any other "reality" shows?
I have heard of the Kardashians but I genuinely don't know why they are famous & wouldn't recognise them.
It's not being "superior", I have no interest in influencer type stuff.

I found it just as baffling during the general election that i had loads of colleagues who literally didnt know who any of the following were:
Keir starmer
Ed davey
Penny mordaunt
Angela rayner
Rachel reeves
Jacob rees mogg
Nigel farage
Jess philips

These are people who are in the news regularly and yet most colleagues did not even know they were MPs. One younger colleague had not heard of Theresa May.

Really?! Shock Do all of these people spend their time asleep?!

How the fuck has ANYONE - over 16 - not heard of all of these FFS?!

SweetBirdsong · 14/08/2024 20:52

Catza · 14/08/2024 20:45

Do you find it hard to believe? Today was the first time I heard that name and it was because of the thread title (and I didn't even click on the thread). I've been using the internet all day and haven't come across the name (except here) despite my understanding that this is some kind of a big news item.
I don't know where you think people are going on the internet where this information is floating freely but it doesn't seem to be the same place I go. I hear the algorithm is very good nowadays and will offer you adverts for supersonic hedge trimmers the minute you think about them. So I am guessing my devices have me sussed as I never see any celebrity news unless it's about Dave Grohl.

Who the fuck is Dave Grohl? Confused

#kidding He's a fucking legend! Grin

usernother · 14/08/2024 20:53

I don't think people are always pretending. But I don't understand why they feel the need to tell us they don't know who they are. BTW I'm over 60 and I always know who they are.

BoobyDazzler · 14/08/2024 20:53

I know who the kardashians are but those two who were being discussed earlier on for separating.. not a fucking clue, don’t know, don’t want to know.

LiterallyOnFire · 14/08/2024 20:53

What cool about it? If you haven't seen the song, programme or sport, you just won't know.

bergamotorange · 14/08/2024 20:54

I would bother replying "Who?" but I had honestly never heard of either of them until today. Same here.

I can promise you that if DP didn't watch Keeping up with the Kardashians, I would have no idea who they were. I'd think you were on about an alien race from Star Trek!

kitsuneghost · 14/08/2024 20:54

I know the kardashians but beyond that I really don't know who most of them are. It's not snobby or weird. It's just exposure.
And I don't watch a lot of reality shows or read any magazines.

LouH5 · 14/08/2024 20:54

I think the point OP is trying to make is, people go out of their way to comment on news articles or whatever saying “who? Never heard of them!” And it’s that that is so unnecessary! I really believe when people do this, they know damn well who the article is about, but want to look superior or whatever by acting like they don’t.

For example, I don’t follow football and don’t really know many footballers. So if I saw a MN post or news article or whatever, about a footballer I genuinely hadn’t heard of, I’d just scroll on and be uninterested, instead of commenting on it saying “who? Don’t know this person!”

I agree massively with OP that it’s just such a pointless thing to do. If you genuinely haven’t heard of whoever the article is about, just move on! No one cares if you know who they are or not!

Myfavouriteflowers · 14/08/2024 20:54

I'm not cool and dont think I'm cool.
I have no interest in " celebrity".
Of course I've heard of the Kardashians. Who could gave escaped them? Or katie Price.
But when I saw a Molly Mae thread on MN today I wondered why they were posting about Andy Murray's dog? But I understand now it's some woman I know nothing about.
What I don't understand is how people who are into celebrity culture really get upset by the fact a lot of people have absolutely zero interest in it.

LilBowWow · 14/08/2024 20:55

It’s fine to never have heard of people. No problem whatsoever. The people saying “whoooo?” on those threads have definitely heard of them though.

PrincessSakura · 14/08/2024 20:55

I’m in my 30’s but I have no idea who either of them are! There’s tons of “celebs” that I know nothing about!

SweetBirdsong · 14/08/2024 20:55

usernother · 14/08/2024 20:53

Oh they just HAVE to tell us that they don't know these reality TV stars, because it means they're better people, and more intelligent than us plebs who know who they are dontcha know?! 🙄

PreFabBroadBean · 14/08/2024 20:56

I thought this was going to be a weather thread - otherwise I'd never have clicked!

I had no idea who they were, but when I saw the trending post, I actually went to the Daily Mail website 😮, and it was front page news. But then I am 60, so officially well past it...

Oh I see. I would just scroll past a thread like that as I don’t know about them

I think it's when people don't include a surname that people are most likely to say "who?" If stuff isn't clear, people naturally ask.

I've seen threads here just called "Kathy" or whatever, that turned out to be about soap characters.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/08/2024 20:57

I'm 54 and don't know who these people are. I'm not pretending! Obviously I've heard of The Kardashians and vaguely know or think the Dad was OJ's lawyer. Wouldn't know or recognise any of them if I met them in the street or saw them on TV

When any celebrity reality shows are on like I'm a Celeb or Strictly I often only know less than half the people. I'll know them if they are actors from something I watch or ex 80's pop stars , ex politicians but I'd have no idea if they were from a soap or Love Island or an influencer or something like that.

CautiousLurker · 14/08/2024 20:57

Well, I am nowhere near 60 and have teen kids and had no idea who ‘MM’ and partner were until I foolishly clicked on a thread here. Proud to say no member of my family (16-82) has ever watched a reality show (besides Gogglebox, a guilty pleasure of mine). No-one read weekly women’s mags, the DM, or even morning daily TV. Consequently there are a shit load of B and C celebs I have no awareness of, and can happily say so.

In fairness, not having heard of Ed Davey is no discredit. He’s about as well known as the mayor of a hamlet in Rutland.

Mum2jenny · 14/08/2024 20:57

Never heard of Molly-Mae until today, and I still do not care or know anything about her.
Why should I know or care?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/08/2024 20:57

I don't think it's cool, I just sometimes don't know who these people are. I've heard of the Kardashians but couldn't tell you their first names or what they do. I don't know who Molly May is that's mentioned on this thread.

LesMisSaigon · 14/08/2024 20:57

I am in early 50s, I have heard of the Kardashians, but could potentially only identify Kim in a line up. I have vaguely heard of Mollie-Mae, but thought she was from the X Factor, never heard of her fella. I have never watched Love Island, I'm a celebrity, Big Brother or even SCD or anything else starring 'celebrities' ( except quiz shows)

BuccoA · 14/08/2024 20:57

I assumed MM was either mainstream media or Meghan Markle before I scrolled the previous responses.

No idea who the person is people are mentioning but I certainly don't think I'm cool - I'm a 40 year old analyst that enjoys hiking and reading, if anything I think I'm a bog standard nerd.
