Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

OP posts:
BeaRF75 · 16/08/2024 09:30

I'll agree that I have heard of the Kardashians, but I wouldn't recognise a picture of them. Just like I don't know any Taylor Swift songs, but I do know she's really popular. If you get your news from Radio 4 and the broadsheets, why would you recognise some of these so-called celebs? We don't all consume the same media - that's hardly a surprise.

KnittedCardi · 16/08/2024 09:46

I vaguely know the names, but never their daily lives. I don't watch any of the kind of programmes they may have been on..... I have never watched Big Brother, or the Jungle, none of the Round the World stuff, not Love Island, or Made In.... Etc etc etc, they just don't appeal, so I don't come across the kind of people who pop up in these programmes. I haven't watched Strictly for years either as it got boring.

ladydeedy · 16/08/2024 10:27

They are irrelevant as far as I'm concerned and how I chose to live my life. That's why I dont know who they are and am not interested in finding out either! There'll be another one along in a minute, no doubt!

DancelikeFredAstaire · 16/08/2024 10:50

Openthefloodgates · 15/08/2024 19:27

Exactly and I’m saying that they probably do know who they are; they are just saying “who” as if it’s all beneath them

Nope other than what's been said about Molly Mae on here I have no idea about her, why would I if reality shows and "influencers" (whatever the heck they are) are of no interest to me. I could ask you your opinion on a musician that I like, but the chances are you wouldn't know anything about them if you have no interest in their music/band/genre. I wouldn't suggest you were lying if you had not heard of them, nor would I think you were just trying to act "cool".

BlueSmurfPantMan · 16/08/2024 11:18

Whilst I agree that posting "Who?" can be irritating, it is completely valid in some cases.

The OP has chosen to say "MM" in their opening post rather than use the actual name suggesting that she feels that everyone should know what MM stands for. Clearly that is not the case. Googling MM is not going to help.

redskydarknight · 16/08/2024 11:22

I do think it's about understanding that most people choose to focus on a few subjects of interest - and that's just about what they care most about, rather than thinking that they are more "cool".

I suspect if I posted a thread called what do you think about the latest about Tim Walz? there would also be a lot of people saying "who?" despite the fact that he has also been in the news a lot recently, and not knowing about him does not in any way suggest you are cool.

BlueSmurfPantMan · 16/08/2024 11:33

@redskydarknight

Well I could go and google Tim Walz if I wanted to find out who he was/what you were referring to.

If, like the OP, you posted "what do you think about the latest about TW" that would not be helpful.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/08/2024 12:21

TW = thread warning.

Posters need to be clearer!

Justrestingmyeyes1 · 16/08/2024 12:22

Under 60 here and I have no idea who molly mae or her ex are. I’ve heard of the Kardashians but wouldn’t be able to pick them out of a line up.
I’m not interested in reality tv so have never watched an episode of any of the many series that are on.
I promise, I’m not trying to be ‘cool’. Just have no idea who these people
are.

I thought TW was trigger warning.

You're right, I thought it was 'thread warning'. I don't know who Tim Walz is either. Grin

Agree with this. I can think of musicians/artists who are extremely well down in the circles I mix in that if I mentioned them on here most people wouldn’t have a clue

The OP seems to struggle to grasp that different people are familiar with different things

Mummamap · 16/08/2024 13:10

This is a bit of an odd post.
why do you think people are pretending. I wouldn’t know a Kardashian if it slapped me round the face.
i have never watched Love Island or any other reality tv. I couldn’t care less about celebrities to be honest - I have enough going on in my own life without worrying about people I have no interest in.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/08/2024 14:22

I've been thinking about this, it's not superiority. Anybody who thinks that liking/not liking or knowing/not knowing of somebody or other, means that that person is pretending and trying to be 'cool', is a bit of an idiot really.

It's of its time, isn't it? I used to like Big Brother - when it first came out. Never had an interest in the z-leb version because they just weren't, the pukka celebrities never needed BB. The pop groups and bands that I liked, the actors that I rated, there were those from years ago. I genuinely wouldn't know any of the people on the front cover of any gossip magazine now. Am I missing something? No, they're just not in my orbit anymore than I would be in theirs, I'm not their target audience.

The one big difference is that back in the 80s/90s there wasn't a social media as such as I'm grateful for that. It's the most insidious and time-draining 'prop' ever. Others will disagree; I'm ok with that.

Firethehorse · 16/08/2024 15:49

I find it strange you assume people would know who these identikit wannabe famous people are.

DisabledDemon · 16/08/2024 16:00

Well, I'm over 60 and I know who they are - but mostly only at a a superficial level as I wouldn't click on articles about them as I find nearly all of them insufferably boring.

Obviously, I know who Mollie Mae is as she's all over the papers and internet today so it's difficult to avoid articles about her but as for reading the articles? No. I'd rather clean out my kitchen cupboards.

UnfriendMe · 16/08/2024 16:52

Way way under 60 and I have no clue who Molly Mae is. Based on the comments here she is some twat on love Island which I have never watched either but based on what I've heard, it's a show about sex starved d listers.

The more important question is why do people care about this stuff in the first place? Why would you spend your time watching the mundane life of a few stupid women instead of living your own life? The other day I saw an advert for a show about some woman, fern something, and she literally sounded like she was mentally retarded. Is that what passes for entertainment these days?

SweetBirdsong · 16/08/2024 20:15

Some people on TV today were comparing Molly Mae and Tommy Fury to Charles and Diana.

I almost choked on my weetabix this morning at breakfast when I heard that!

😂😂😂

Who cares?

Quite…..

The amount of people who missed the point on this thread - is quite simply shocking.

A question, OP, a genuine one — where do you imagine people pick up this basic knowledge of who the Kardashians etc are? What outlets, publications, forms of media etc? Where do you absorb this information from?

I think the reason people are missing your point is that you have made it really badly!

If you had included your later examples (David Beckham, Taylor Swift etc) then it would have made a lot more sense as these are all people in mainstream news - but unless someone is interested in celebrity culture or particular TV shows then they probably haven't come across Molly-Mae (whoever she is). Although I guess a lot more MNers have at least heard the name after this thread!

People are responding to your opening statement and refuting it. If you meant something else, you should have said something else.

YANBU. It's why they even bother commenting that gets me!
