Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

Molly-Mae I am thinking! Broke up with Tommy Fury. Social media explosion!

Genuinely never heard of either of them. Am still under 60 and keep up with national, local and international news.

Have heard of Kardashians, but wouldn't recognise one, enjoy celebrity masterchef but usually have to research who's who.

YANBU. It's why they even bother commenting that gets me!

People are responding because it's a really dumb question, so dumb in fact that it makes it interesting. Also the concept of 'cool' is dumb as dumb can be. It's a concept suitable teenagers not adults. Also the OP posted it on 'AIBU' whereas it should be on 'Chat'. Also dumb

Therefore it's a triple dummy!

The amount of people who missed the point on this thread - is quite simply shocking.

Well maybe so many are missing the point because you’ve moved the goalposts several times.

If you made a clear point very few would have missed it

The "celebrity" type programmes are very much a case in point. I don't think I've ever watched one where I knew who all the "celebrities" were prior to the programme starting.

As a family, we watch Strictly most years. There has never yet been a year that all 4 of us know everyone between us, but my young adult DC quite often know celebrities that DH and I have never heard of (and vice versa).
(None of us watch soaps, so the soap stars are often the ones that none of us know).

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/08/2024 11:03

OP, why did you even post this ridiculous thread? You said that you don't follow the Kardashians, have never watched an episode... and yet you can't understand why other people don't know who they are? Why bother yourself about them at all then?

I suppose also that it depends what you (general, not aimed at you) watch and which channel that's on because the adverts mention upcoming programmes. Someone like me uses that time to dash to the loo, make a drink or put a wash on or do something else, before returning to my programme. That could be why some of us don't have your trashy celeb knowledge/? Or we could be streaming having paid extra to not have these adverts at all. Mind-blowing, eh?

I've heard of the Kardashians, I don't understand what they do but have no desire to investigate. Have never heard of Molly Mae. I guess you'll need to try for lie detectors next?

Stupid thread... and my programme's about to start!

Lovelysummerdays · 17/08/2024 11:14

I know who the Kardashians are! Vaguely, big rich family, lots of makeup, ruined Marilyn Monroe dress, Kanye west ex. No idea who molly mae is, I don’t really do social media, I do watch American late night stuff daily show, Seth Meyers, John Oliver type stuff so get bits of knowledge that way. It’s a fairly big leap from social media star to late night tv topic. I wouldn’t be surprised if the number who consume that type of social media content is smaller than you’d think.

rzb · 17/08/2024 18:39

@SnakesAndArrows

If you meant something else, you should have said something else.

Quite. I think a high proportion of arguments would be avoided if people communicated clearly and accurately.

FFS. I've had enough of this weird reality.

Who or what is MM?

Edited

Honestly thought they meant Meghan Markle.

Why don't I know who social media influencers are? Because I am 56 and a snob.

I think you've misunderstood...the PP was asking why people even comment, on stories about people they haven't heard about, to let others know they haven't heard of the person.

steff13 · 18/08/2024 03:04

I don't know who a lot of celebrities are. I don't think it's cool not to know. I do think it's odd to comment on a thread or post about said celebrity with just "who?" I mean if you're interested enough to reply then certainly you're interested enough to just Google who the person is. If you genuinely don't know and don't care then what is the point of replying?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/08/2024 14:32

People respond to all kinds of threads about things they don't know about or have an interest in. Not just about random celebs, innocuous things, like 'slips'. Believe me, that thread ran for pages and pages because of posters (who don't like, wear or even know what slips are), frothing away about them.

People are strange. Grin

FuzzyPuffling · 14/08/2024 20:17

Why under 60? Do people over 60 not read the news or watch tv? Do they suddenly become immune to tat?

I see what you're saying. I don't think age really has much to do with it, although arguably older people are less likely to be interested in current celebs, and certainly less interested in music industry related ones than younger people.

I'm just over 60 now, but probably for the last thirty years I've neither read the news nor watched TV news. I do however listen to Radio 4 constantly - which has very in depth news coverage, but tends to be a totally celeb free zone. So I have very little idea who any of them are (although I have heard of the Kardashians - but not Molly Mae). So I'm not immune to tat - I'm just not really exposed to it and never have been.

Elsvieta · 18/08/2024 20:13

One of them's called Kim and she used to be married to Kanye West and has a huge arse. There are some other sisters - don't know how many, think their names all start with K but don't know what the names are (must have heard at some point I suppose, but don't remember). Don't know what the sisters do. They are all somehow related to a transgender athlete who played some sport Brits don't follow, I think. That's it. And there must be people who know less than that. Some people really don't follow this stuff.

EmeraldA129 · 20/08/2024 09:59

I had to read the thread to find out who MM is…. But it doesn’t sound like she’s that famous tbh

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 20/08/2024 14:21

Katherineryan1986 · 14/08/2024 20:22

When you put MM my first thought was Meghan Markle 🤷‍♀️ I truly haven't a clue who Molly Mae or Tommy Fury are and I am under 60

I thought mainstream media

Gingernaut · 20/08/2024 22:12

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 20/08/2024 14:21

I thought mainstream media

Nah, that's MSM

MM was for Meghan Markle, she's clearly been replaced by thus nonentity

asdfgasdfg · 21/08/2024 20:13

I know the names but nothing about them, have no young people in my family so no need to know them. DH takes it to a stupid level apparently doesn't know who David Beckham is, idiot

OneAmusedUser · 15/05/2025 10:28

Late to this party, but I'd agree that if you're in a first world country, you likely know the Kardashians, but I've never heard of Molly Mae until this week. But... you're forgetting that many people aren't interested in rubbish shows and rubbish media - a lot of people wouldn't know an apparently popular "influencer" or socialite if they fell over one - zero interest in those social circles. I don't actually know how the Kardashians ever came to prominence, even though I know the name. I assume another waste of time 'reality' tv show? And yes, I'm not 20, but nowhere near 60.

AgentJohnson · 15/05/2025 11:10

What a strange position to take.

DD 18 has no interest in the Khadashians and wouldn’t be able to identify any of them in a lineup. I’m not on SM but if Marina Hyde and Richard Osman are talking about it on their That’s Entertainment podcast, then I’m covered.

DisabledDemon · 15/05/2025 13:52

'Who?' means that the person is irrelevant - either to the commentator or society in general. It doesn't necessarily mean that you've never heard of them, just that they mean nothing.

TheWorminLabyrinth · 15/05/2025 13:56

This thread was pointless enough the first time around. What a waste of a zombie resurrection.

IsItAllRubbish · 15/05/2025 13:56

I used to be a bit “ok whatever <eye-roll>” about people not knowing Taylor Swift but I have no idea who Chappell Roan or Sabrina Carpenter are (well, I’ve very recently learned of them).

CurlewKate · 16/05/2025 07:04

It’s like when the Glastonbury line up is announced, and people respond to very mainstream acts with “who?” Just in case anyone thinks they’re one of the “mundanes”.
