To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I think people are missing the point.

I have never seen the kardashians, I know almost nothing about them, but I have absolutely heard of them and know roughly what they are famous for.

I don’t believe that people haven’t heard of them.

I have no idea who Molly-Mae is! My teenager doesn't know either as I've just asked. I have heard of the Kardashians but don't know individual names or what they're famous for. My teenager told me they were reality stars, if I recall correctly.

I'll be honest and admit that I had to google who they are. I had heard of them but didn't know what they were known for.

I don't watch Love Island and that is why they were unfamiliar to me. It doesn't make me superior or cool. I couldn't name most of the England football squad either as neither Love Island nor football interest me very much.

I do this because I honestly did not know who you were referring to when you said MM. I do not know who Molly Mae is.
I don't think they feature in BBC news, do they?
I am 53. I sort of know who the Kardashian's are, but mostly from MN I think; I don't follow them or have the slightest bit of interest in them.

Off to Google now.

Me neither. I do remember they named their baby after a cartoon character, because I saw something about that but I don't know what the mum is famous for.

I'm not being snotty though: I could tell you all the ins and outs of the Kardashians, for example.

I think people forget that we're living in a world of infinite, fragmented media and we don't all see the same stuff that they do. Probably OP included. Strange that she thinks anyone would pretend.

I am quite a bit younger than 60 but have no interest in celebs, so hadn't heard of them.

I was about to say exactly this.

I have heard of the Kardashians but I have no idea who they are individually, and I don’t care.

I am not cool, and have no interest in being cool. It’s bizarre that you think this is a pretence.

I don’t really know who most trashy celebs are. Only the ones that are big enough to feature in mainstream non-tabloid newspapers.

I’m not on social media and don’t read magazines other than Vogue, don’t watch tv, so I really don’t have exposure to that, unless someone does something that has wider relevance and is featured on the business pages or gets a Sunday newspaper feature.

So I’ll know Katie Price, MM I’ve just heard the name and that she’s a popular influencer but nothing else.

I know who the kardashians are but the only one I would recognise would be Kim.

I had no idea who Molly May was until I saw a thread earlier about her relationship break up. I don’t watch love island so I wouldn’t know who she is.

I can recognise Kim Kardashian. I couldn't tell the other Kardashians apart though - wouldn't know which was which.

I rarely know who 'celebrities' are. Influencers I have zero clue on. I'm only 41. I don't know much about the Kardashians - I know they are rich (don't know why) and had a family tv show and like sparkle and plastic surgery. I'm pretty sure Molly Mae was on love island and I think her boyfriend was a boxer and I think they have a toddler maybe. I know they broke up as some ad popped up on my Facebook today. On the whole I'm pretty happy with my level of knowledge on slebs.

Just checked my BBC news app (am away on holiday) and see in fact she is in the news.
I wouldn't click on the story to read I don't think.
When I googled Molly, first hit was Ringwald, Mae wasn't high in the popular hits.

I used to think the same and I think there are some celebs that are obviously well known, and people act like who they don’t know is a bit silly (eg madonna) esp when its a death thread.

BUT.. i do think its possible to not know so called bog celebs- my youngest niece recently telling me about all the music and ‘celebs’ she follows and I honestly had 0 idea who they were and having checked social media they have massive followings so you would have thought I would.

One example- Olivia rodrigo.. massive singer who apparently has sold out many 02 shows this summer and everyone under the age of 25 probably knows. I had heard the name but I honestly thought she was some reality tv star lol

I’m only aware of them because of the Daily Mail. Since they changed their cookie settings I literally can’t look at all the celeb trash. It’s very freeing.

I agree with you OP in the respect that people will hop onto a thread about someone they've never heard of, just to say they've never heard of them. Why bother? If the thread isn't of interest because you've not heard of the subject then just move on to something that does interest you.

Seems a strange thing to randomly disbelieve. Have you got any idea how many films there are to stream, sports available online, YouTube channels to watch etc?

Why do you think everybody has seen the same things you have?

I have heard of the Kardashians. This thread is the first I had heard of Mollie May and Tommy Fury. I have no idea whatsoever who they are. I thought the thread about them was a baby names thread. I have no reason to lie about that.

I’m 43 and until this evening had no clue who MM is. I asked my 12 year old - she knew!

Well I’ve heard of the Kardashian’s but beyond that I wouldn’t be able to pick them out in a line up. No clue why they are celebrities.

Frequently during conversations about well known actors etc I don’t have a clue.

I’d say it’s more ignorance and definitely not trying to be cool and I also have a crap memory for names and faces…Does that makes me cool? 😆🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t know who the Kardashians are apart from there’s one called Kim who was married to Kanye West! I couldn’t tell you who is in the family or what any of them do apart from they had/have a reality tv prog and people are foolish enough to believe it’s their real lives and not scripted. 🤷‍♀️
