To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

Another one who assumed 'mainstream media' and has never seen Love Island. I've heard of the Kardashians but I don't know what they do and I wouldn't be able to pick one out of a police line up.

Is it really that odd that different people are interested in different things?

I know who she is - because she was in literally the only season of Love Island I watched. Had she been from any other season, I wouldn't have a clue.

I watched it because there was so much hype from people I was working with, so I thought I would give it a go. I've had no desire to watch it since.

Why do you think people are pretending not to know who she is? She's the kind of celebrity that is mostly known to a younger age group and only some of them... I doubt that even my kids know who she is, and they would be the right age group.

I know who the Kardashians are but I have no idea who Mollie Mae is. So my life is carrying on as normal and I'm not devastated by her break up with Tommy, whoever he is.

The people who respond with "Who?" are ridiculous and trying to pretend they are somehow 'above' popular culture. It's snobbery of the most hilarious kind and I enjoy seeing it

In real life, loads of people will have no idea who these people are, but will either not bother to click on the thread or will Google the person/people. That's the normal thing to do.

I thought MM was Meghan Markle too, not heard of the other one. I don't follow celebrity gossip at all so unless they were famous in the 90s or they're big enough to appear in The Times (where I try to avoid the MM/Meghan Markle articles), I probably don't know who they are. Promise I'm not just trying to look cool!

OP I get what you mean. It is the posters who open a thread such as on MM and just say who? If you are generally posting on MN you probably will at least heard the name even if you are not sure exactly who they are, just from general osmosis.

If you really haven't heard of them, just close the thread and move on.

Well I recognise the names but I really couldn't identify any of them as I don't watch them on tv, don't watch love island etc. same with Big Brother, Made in Chelsea etc etc - I have no interest in any of them.

People don't 'think it's cool' - they genuinely don't always know who celebrities are, trashy or not.

Is your frame of reference so limited that you can't imagine others might have different frames of reference?

Your acquaintances who don't know the Kardashians might have an encyclopaedic knowledge of well-known figures in a field or era that interests them - say, they might know numerous top golfers, past and present. Would you expect them to sneer if you said you didn't know who Scottie Scheffler was?

It’s not the fact they don’t know who the people are, it’s the “am I supposed to know who that is?” type comments. Just hang around until you put two and two together or read a thread that’s highbrow enough for you.

You're not superior or smarter or more clever than those who watch these shows, so just bore off. nb, I have tried watching the Kardashians and really don't like it, and used to Watch Love Island, but have been bored with it this past few years. Last decent series was the one with Ekin-Su. But I don't judge and deride people who watch these shows and enjoy them. Also, I like Big Brother.

I'm always amused by the people who leave comments such as "Who?" or "Never heard of them." under online articles. These are obviously disingenuous comments since, presumably, anyone commenting on online fora has access to internet search engines and, if genuinely curious about the subject of the piece, could look them up in seconds. Alternatively, they could choose not to click on an article about someone they'd never heard of.
When people go out of their way to leave these sort of comments on articles they are demonstrating their intellectual superiority to being aware of such frivolous celebrity nonsense, which can surely be the only reason for leaving this kind of glib pointless comment which suggests they've actually taken the time to read a whole piece about someone they supposedly have never heard of and care nothing about.

I have no idea who Molly-Mae is! My teenager doesn't know either as I've just asked. I have heard of the Kardashians but don't know individual names or what they're famous for. My teenager told me they were reality stars, if I recall correctly.
