To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I don't know who either of them are. I use limited social media, and have little interest in celebrities that don't seem to have actually done anything.
I've heard of the Kardashians. Mainly off the back of the OJ Simpson debacle.

Or maybe they just don't know who those celebrities are and/or find celebrity worship culture a bit bizarre.

I know who the Kardashians are, but am not a Love Island fan so have no clue who these people are.

It seems like a very false comparison to me…

Because I have no interest in following what celebs do. I'm aware of the Kardashian's (but I'd have no idea on any of their first names). It's not that I'm pretending to be cool but just that I have no interest in celebs.

I know who the Kardashians are, they’re internationally famous. I’ve no idea who Milly Mae and Tommy are, but have seen references to Love Island so assume that’s why they’re famous. I don’t think it’s “cool” especially not to know who they are, I’ve just never watched and have no interest in Love Island so don’t know anyone connected with it, not on Instagram etc so wouldn’t see anything they post.

I hadn't heard of Molly Mae until today. I don't think that makes me cool, it just means I have no interest in Love Island.
It is possible that not everyone watches the same show and if you don't watch it you wouldn't know.

Many of us don’t watch reality tv shows like that. I didn’t know who Molly Mae is until today. Love Island and shows like it are not my thing. I have watched a few episodes of Love at First Sight Australia years ago but then it was just boring after awhile with the same dynamics.

I have decades before I’ll be 60, btw.

I know the Kardashians are a reality TV family in America. Never heard of Molly-Mae in all my puff and I'm only 45. But I also know that I am deeply, deeply uncool.

I know who the Kardashians are but there are plenty of people I have zero knowledge of who everyone else seems to.

I’m not snobbish - I like classic literature, opera, rap, Married at First Sight, Strictly and a whole host of varied things.

But no idea who was in the jungle, love island, most music after 2000 etc.

I don't have a TV nor do I read celebrity news.

Whilst I may have heard a name in passing, I have no idea who they are and don't care enough to bother googling.

I googled MM news first and it’s a media house in Pakistan. Took me reading another post to find out who OP was on about.

I honestly have no idea (or interest) in any of them. I assumed MM was Meghan Markle.

I don't watch TV or use SM other than Mumsnet. I do read the news but don't bother with anything celebrity related

I watched a few Married at first Sights but then got bored.

I'm now fed up of reality shows and I can't see myself watching another one.

I'm another who'd never heard of MM or Tommy before today. And I still know nothing about them beyond the fact they were on Love Island. I don't think this makes me cool or not cool, just someone who doesn't watch Love Island or read articles about celebrities.

I think it's more odd that people do assume you know who these people are, as if they can't imagine that people who don't watch reality tv exist.

When there are threads about influencers, I genuinely rarely have a clue.

But rather than making a twat of myself by typing 'who?' and expecting people to explain to me, I quietly Google.

To be fair mumsnet got readers all over the world and some "celebrities" are just famous in their own country.
