Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

“Like you ** I find it very hard to believe that anyone who uses the internet (and everyone on Mumsnet does!) has never heard of Molly-Mae.

Please! 🙄”

HELLO! @SweetBirdsong now you’ve met one! 🤣 I use the internet daily and have never ever heard of Molly-Mae until today. 🤷🏼‍♀️

WolfFoxHare · 14/08/2024 20:44

I have seen a headline today that someone called Molly Mae has broken up with someone else. I had never heard of her before, nor of the bloke she’s broken up with, and I didn’t click on the story. I’d probably never have thought of it again if I hadn’t read this thread. I’m just not interested in most slebs. I’m sure the things I’m interested in and aware of are obscure to other people, that’s fine with me.

Arrivapercy · 14/08/2024 20:45

I have heard the name kardashian but would have no idea of the first name, or why they are famous etc

I don't really watch any television or use instagram or similar social media and the only radio station i listen to is radio 3

And i am under 40

Sethera · 14/08/2024 20:45

Like you I find it very hard to believe that anyone who uses the internet (and everyone on Mumsnet does!) has never heard of Molly-Mae

That's a naive thing to say. Think of the welter of information that's constantly bombarding you on the internet. You simply can't take all of it in or register every single person who is ever mentioned on the screens you look at. You develop a filter so you see what interests you and discount the rest.

chattyness · 14/08/2024 20:45

I'm under 60 and just about know who they are, but not what they're about, I just assume they're from some reality show or other that I don't watch or fashion brand I don't care about so I've no interest in them. I don't care about someone else's breakups anyway unless they're my close family. The trouble is main stream media and social media never shut up about them , so I scroll on or turn over if it's T.V . I don't wish them any ill will, I just don't give a shit about their problems. They won't care about mine either 😆

jammiel · 14/08/2024 20:45

I'm horribly out of touch though, especially if it involves pop music. I did watch Made in Chelsea some years ago though (admittedly rubbish) so I know who some of those celebrities are when they are mentioned.

Arrivapercy · 14/08/2024 20:45

I have literally never heard of molly mae.

Teanbiscuits33 · 14/08/2024 20:45

Not everyone has any interest in love island - I, for one, would rather watch paint dry, as would everybody I’m close to, and not everybody considers people from reality shows ‘’celebrities’’.

It’s not that much of a shocker that people don’t know who celebs are. I’m only 33 and couldn’t tell you who most of the latest celebs are because I genuinely couldn’t give a single shit about their lives, I have my own to live.

I find it very sad that people are so obsessed with people from reality shows, to be honest.

Catza · 14/08/2024 20:45

SweetBirdsong · 14/08/2024 20:39

Yeah it annoys me too

Same kind of numpty who posts..........

'There have been nearly 300 episodes of 'Keeping Up With The Kardshians' in 20 years, and I am proud to say that I am intelligent enough to have never watched a single episode ever.'

Big fucking whoop-dee-doo for you! 🙄

Ditto Love Island.

You're not superior or smarter or more clever than those who watch these shows, so just bore off. nb, I have tried watching the Kardashians and really don't like it, and used to Watch Love Island, but have been bored with it this past few years. Last decent series was the one with Ekin-Su. But I don't judge and deride people who watch these shows and enjoy them. Also, I like Big Brother.

Like you @Emz1212 I find it very hard to believe that anyone who uses the internet (and everyone on Mumsnet does!) has never heard of Molly-Mae.

Please! 🙄

Do you find it hard to believe? Today was the first time I heard that name and it was because of the thread title (and I didn't even click on the thread). I've been using the internet all day and haven't come across the name (except here) despite my understanding that this is some kind of a big news item.
I don't know where you think people are going on the internet where this information is floating freely but it doesn't seem to be the same place I go. I hear the algorithm is very good nowadays and will offer you adverts for supersonic hedge trimmers the minute you think about them. So I am guessing my devices have me sussed as I never see any celebrity news unless it's about Dave Grohl.

SweetBirdsong · 14/08/2024 20:46

jammiel · 14/08/2024 20:41

I have no idea who Molly-Mae is! My teenager doesn't know either as I've just asked. I have heard of the Kardashians but don't know individual names or what they're famous for. My teenager told me they were reality stars, if I recall correctly.

Your TEENAGER has never heard of Molly-Mae?!

Just wow.

ilovesooty · 14/08/2024 20:46

HappierTimesAhead · 14/08/2024 20:21

Also, someone might have heard 'Kardashians' but literally know nothing about them or even their level of fame so if they said, "Who are they, I have no idea " then they would be telling the truth. They may not even know why they are famous, what they look like, what their names are. It would still be fairly accurate for them to say they don't know who they are.

What I genuinely don't understand is why it bothers people when people say they've never heard of a celeb (whether they are lying or not).

Agreed. I know they're some kind of celebrities but I don't know anything about them. Until I read this thread I'd never heard of Molly - Mae. I don't regard that as particularly "cool".

MargaretThursday · 14/08/2024 20:46

We don't have a TV, don't use much social media and have a dreadful memory for names (just ask my children).

I have heard of the Kardashians but have no idea beyond that they're famous for tv stuff and have no interest to go and read about them. Never heard of the other two before today.
It's something I have no interest in. Other things I could tell you all about and you would have no interest. Not knowing doesn't mean you're greater/lesser, simply a different interest and knowledge.
I wouldn't normally post on the threads and ask who though.

OldTinHat · 14/08/2024 20:46

I have no clue as to even who A list celebs are! I can't recognise anyone and I'm not interested in their private lives.

Same, never heard of Molly Mae, so I checked with 15 year old ds, who looked blank and said " there's a Molly in my year at school" 🤣

Iwasafool · 14/08/2024 20:47

Oh well I'm 70 so I'm OK not knowing. Glad we cleared that up.

Sethera · 14/08/2024 20:47

KvotheTheBloodless · 14/08/2024 20:41

See, this is a perfect example of what I mean - use of the word "trashy" to demonstrate that the poster is somehow above such oiks, and simultaneously pretending they don't know which celebrity us being referred to.

If you don't know the celeb, how do you 'know' he/she is trashy?

I love Mumsnet sometimes, especially the class wars 😂

Er, the OP starts To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/08/2024 20:47

I have heard of the Kardashians. But I genuinely had never heard of Molly Mae until she was on the news today. It really does depend what you watch and listen to I think. When the BBC announces the Strictly line up I usually only know of half of the contestants. It’s not an affectation. I’m 57. But I’d say I’ve been out of that loop for 20 years or so. I’ve no reason to pretend I haven’t heard of people if I have. It just happens that I often haven’t.

Ageism

Cosyblankets · 14/08/2024 20:49

I know the name Kardashians and i know there's a Kim but i couldn't name another one and i wouldn't know them if they sat next to me.
I too thought MM was megan markle. I've never heard of molly mae. I've never watched love island.
There's nothing fake about me not knowing who they are. I have no interest whatsoever.

Garlicfest · 14/08/2024 20:49

Madamecholetsbonnet · 14/08/2024 20:25

I know who the Kardashians are, but am not a Love Island fan so have no clue who these people are.

It seems like a very false comparison to me…

Same here. I'm befuddled by all the people going HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW WHO THEY ARE? YOU DO KNOW, EVERYBODY KNOWS THEM, STOP LYING!!!

I've only watched Love Island twice, and couldn't watch it to the end either time. I was hoping to be wildly fascinated by new, exciting weirdness but it was just young people being vapid in too much makeup. Same as real-life people in my clubbing days, but on TV. I had to look to Sam Smith for my contemporary weirdness injection.
... oh, have they had him/them/it on Love island??

minthybobs · 14/08/2024 20:50

I know who the kardashians are but I have no clue about younger celebs as I have never watched love island or any of that garbage and even though I see them in the paper sometimes they all look the same to me! They all have duck lips, extensions and the same brows so I can’t really distinguish them and I don’t want to. They are literally irrelevant to my life so I pay no attention.

I don’t think that’s particularly odd, on the contrary I think it’s rather healthy actually. I’m very focused on my family and my own goals so that’s where my attention goes 🤷🏻‍♀️ Im in my 40s btw so not exactly old either.

Arrivapercy · 14/08/2024 20:51

I found it just as baffling during the general election that i had loads of colleagues who literally didnt know who any of the following were:
Keir starmer
Ed davey
Penny mordaunt
Angela rayner
Rachel reeves
Jacob rees mogg
Nigel farage
Jess philips

These are people who are in the news regularly and yet most colleagues did not even know they were MPs. One younger colleague had not heard of Theresa May.

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/08/2024 20:51

According to Wikipedia: “Molly-Mae Hague (born 26 May 1999)[1] is an English social media influencer who was a runner-up in the fifth series of the reality dating show Love Island. She is a brand ambassador for PrettyLittleThing.”

She doesn’t sound as though she’s particularly famous, unless you watch Love Island, follow influencers on Instagram, and shop at Pretty Little Thing. I’m more amazed that so many people seem to know exactly who she is and that her break up would be reported on by mainstream media!

SeeTheWorldAnotherWay · 14/08/2024 20:51

DilemmaDelilah · 14/08/2024 20:17

I really don't know who most of them are - and I really don't care!

Same. I genuinely have no idea who most of them are, nor do I care.
