I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

Buy one, a pepper grinder is about a quid.

KimberleyClark · 31/07/2024 17:46

Do you not have a black pepper mill? Freshly ground black pepper is ace.

user8464987632 · 31/07/2024 17:46

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

Yeah you need to buy one. You can get one from Morrisons for like 56p . It’s just a normal thing to have in. So normal I wouldn’t think to ask someone if they had it in.

yeesh · 31/07/2024 17:48

Black pepper goes in everything surely? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t have it

KimberleyClark · 31/07/2024 17:48

I use white pepper to season the veg when I do a roast.

Presumably not, as she doesn't use pepper.

thebluebeyond · 31/07/2024 17:48

Why is it a big deal? just get a little pepper shaker for about £1.10.

Didimum · 31/07/2024 17:49

Should anyone care?

let your guest keep it?

Raaraathelionrah · 31/07/2024 17:49

Is it a reverse?! Have you said you’re making a meal when visiting and host has asked you to buy a pepper grinder if you want to use it?!

Procrastinates · 31/07/2024 17:49

How can you not use black pepper? It's so versatile, useful, lasts ages and cost about 40p. I'd be very surprised to find it wasn't in someone's cupboard.

I use white pepper regularly, in Chinese dishes, and in things like white sauce where black specks would spoil the look of the finished dish. It’s stronger than black pepper.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:49

no pepper mill.

last time I used pepper it was to bake christmas spiced biscuits.

YANBU. Every house is different. You’ll never find sugar and onions in my house. It’s just not something we use. Even if it’s 1p I wouldn’t buy them as I don’t need them.

SauvignonBlonk · 31/07/2024 17:50

It’s up to you OP but I think you’re missing out. Fresh black pepper is gorgeous!

Fifteentreefrogs · 31/07/2024 17:50

I'm with you. I never owned pepper. I have some now because my DH bought it. I've never bought any in my entire life.

SwingTheMonkey · 31/07/2024 17:51

Someone is offering to cook for you, why wouldn’t you just get some in? What a strange hill to die on.

<faints away at the thought of cooking without onions>

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:47

why?

I don't use it.

I hate tea, but I still buy tea bags. I never add salt but I still keep it in for other people as it’s a common condiment that people like. It’s no hardship. You can buy a tub of ground pepper for less than a couple of pounds in Aldi.

GreyCarpet · 31/07/2024 17:52

Not really sure what the purpose of the thread is really.

You're not unreasonable for not having it in if you don't use it. They're not unreasonable for asking for it - it's not like they're shocked you don't have fresh lemongrass.

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

So what if they do? If they want to buy some, let them.

It does sound like this has become a matter of principle. It's pepper.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:52

if I want heat I use other spices.

OP posts:
ouch321 · 31/07/2024 17:53

I have it as a cupboard staple should a visitor ask for it if eating over but don't touch it myself. It's too spicy.

Beth216 · 31/07/2024 17:53

Freshly ground pepper on scrambled eggs is a must surely? Also particularly great for anything in a white sauce,
I've read that adding black pepper to a meal helps you to absorb nutrients, I wouldn't be without it.
