I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

But pepper goes in literally everything I cook, how can you not use it?

Lifeomars · 31/07/2024 18:58

I don't like it on my food, but I keep it in as I add it to some of the things I cook. I also keep it in for guests, same with sugar, there if the urge to make a cake or a pudding suddenly descends and also for guests who have it in hot drinks.

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

Funnily enough I recently went back to white pepper. It's hotter and just pepperier.

quietdays · 31/07/2024 18:53

But it’s not the same taste. I buy black peppercorn but white pepper already ground. White pepper is stronger. And I buy red peppercorns.

Edited

I like black pepper and rainbow. Just checked the jar, and it was a third black, third coriander, sixth white, and sixth pink/green/allspice. Now replaced with black, though I want to buy coriander and mix it half half as I love coriander. Just haven't felt the need to use anything else.

mitogoshi · 31/07/2024 19:01

I'm guessing many of the people posting here don't actually cook from scratch though. I get through a kilo of onions and 4 bulbs of garlic in a week, a pepper grinder lasts me 6 months. But I cook from scratch

Apart from chefs and anyone who likes cooking. I use black pepper for everyday but white pepper if I want some heat in the dish.

No rainbow pepper though as can’t risk it with a cashew/pistachio allergic child (pink peppercorn is a known partnership).

I’ll be on the poncetastic Christmas thread later 😂

Hmm. Salt only household. Writing on MN about pepper ?
Guests are supposed to be accommodated to a degree. Refusing to have pepper is a bit extreme.
Perhaps just collect some packets from McD, or splurge at Poundland for some black pepper you can keep for 10 yrs just for this guest.

I use white pepper - it is ace on sprouts and cabbage - as it is much hotter than black pepper. There seems to be an image that white pepper is less 'posh' than black pepper. No idea why, they are equally expensive.
Very odd not to have both black pepper and grinder and white pepper, possibly ready ground, but also could have a grinder for that as well - white peppercorns are available.
Pepper (I have cayenne as well as white and black) is a basic spice.

You must eat a very bland diet. Do you never eat out or have a takeaway?

Or you could see it from the otherside and think why do I need to add so much stuff to my food to make it taste good. If everything is covered in pepper surely your just tasting pepper and not the actual food

@AGodawfulsmallaffair

where the hell from??

Only the best, Iceland and Poundland!

BreadInCaptivity · 31/07/2024 19:03

Each to their own but I use pepper lavishly and daily.

Fresh ground black pepper, pink pepper, white pepper, long pepper, pickled green peppercorns.

It's my favourite spice.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/07/2024 19:03

I use pepper daily, it is a little unusual for any decent cook (who admits using other spices) not to have pepper.

Very occaisonally I'll do minces and stews from scratch but its mostly in the winter. Even then I use lazy garlic powder or sauce as I can't physically prepare garlic, and I buy chopped diced onions. I still don't use pepper.

If you're doing it properly then no of course it doesn't just all taste like pepper. In the same way other herbs and spices are used and they don't overpower the food. Cooking without any herbs or spices would indeed give a very bland dish.

How do you cook, its not possible to make most recipes without using any herbs or spices?

I eat mainly toasties, egg on toast, baked potato, beans on toast, pasta and cheese. A take away is usually chicken balls and a plain chow mein.

Youcantcallacatspider · 31/07/2024 19:07

How do people function in life being so petty?! You can buy a mini schwarz pepper grinder from most shops for a couple of quid. Just get one and let the guests take it home if you don't want it. You'll give yourself an aneurysm letting such a none-issue take up so much head space

Are you me this is my kind of diet although I did buy a cookbook the other day so who knows 🤷‍♀️

I use both. White pepper is better for sauces I find and actually quite underrated.

Devonbabs · 31/07/2024 19:08

It’s just one of those things people generally have. It’s rare I would use it but when people come over for dinner I’d put it on the table

LoneHydrangea · 31/07/2024 19:09

Buy one and give as a gift to your guest when they leave?

Do you not have guests often? It seems very odd to not have a pepper mill for dinner guests’ use. We always put pepper and salt mills on the table when we have guests.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 19:10

tbh I have visitor fatigue
3 days of noise and queues for the bathroom so far.
and faffing. one of them is master faffer.

and dinner is later than usual.

I have never heard of rainbow. Do you use it on everything?

I'm like this with salt and only have it to tackle the slugs in the garden....

OP - You need to ask mumsnet to move this thread to ‘attention seeking’ section of the site

AIBU is the ‘attention seeking’ section of the site these days, isn’t it?
