I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

I use black pepper for European and North African dishes, white pepper for Asian dishes. For American (North or South) one can sub in chipotle or jalapeño (mild) chillis.
If you neither make nor eat any of those then YANBU.

Differentstarts · 31/07/2024 18:40

We don't have pepper can't stand the stuff so have never bought any

KimberleyClark · 31/07/2024 18:43

White pepper is also very good on baked beans. Always have it on my beans on toast.

if I buy some now ift will only gather dust until I have the next clear out.

If I bought some pepper for someone who planned to use it in meals she wanted to cook for me, and she was then able to use it in my food, I would be going hungry because I loathe the taste of the stuff. As far as I am concerned it spoils anything it is in.

Forgot about beans on toast! Always use white pepper on mine too. On a fry up you need both. Cracked black pepper on the fried eggs and white on the baked beans.

Do you use turmeric? It’s best to pair it with black pepper to get the curcurmin.

If you need recipes using it, I can share one from my weekly rotation that uses 4 peppercorns as part of the spice blend 😋

GinAndBeerIt · 31/07/2024 18:45

I think I'm the only woman in the world who doesn't have any herbs and spices in the cupboards.
I do have salt and black pepper somewhere in them though.

I use white pepper regularly, in Chinese dishes, and in things like white sauce where black specks would spoil the look of the finished dish. It’s stronger than black pepper.

I use white pepper in scrabbled eggs but normally I use crushed black pepper in everything, it's lovely on strawberries!

Agreed. My tastebuds are dying at the thought! To be missing out on such a lot of varied, deep and accent flavours!

I just skip the onion part. My DH doesn’t eat onions and I don’t like touching/ cutting them. It’s no big deal.

WetBandits · 31/07/2024 18:48

But what do you have on your scrambled eggs?! Shock

I don't and I also don't have pepper but I like really basic food

Salt, cheese and sometimes ketchup

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

I still use white pepper in a cheese sauce.
And I put lots of black pepper in/on loads of things. I’d be very peed off in someone else’s house if I was eating there and they didn’t have any.

ItsAlrightDarling · 31/07/2024 18:53

If someone was cooking for me and my family and asked for a very cheap, simple ingredient to help with that, I’d pick one up with the shop.

Why do these have to be white pepper? I've always used (plenty of) black pepper. I don't think I've even seen white peppercorns in the supermarket.

But it’s not the same taste. I buy black peppercorn but white pepper already ground. White pepper is stronger. And I buy red peppercorns.

You must eat a very bland diet. Do you never eat out or have a takeaway?

How can you not use black pepper? It's so versatile, useful, lasts ages and cost about 40p. I'd be very surprised to find it wasn't in someone's cupboard.

Edited

I don't use pepper, I don't like the taste. I use salt very sparingly but I have to be careful with it as I have high blood pressure.

FrogFreg · 31/07/2024 18:56

I’m with you OP, I don’t use pepper on/in anything! We have it in the house because my husband likes it, but if I lived alone I wouldn’t buy it.

Turophilic · 31/07/2024 18:57

White pepper is black pepper with the rich aromatic outer layer removed by soaking rather than left in and dried to go black. It just adds heat, no other flavour.

I don’t care if it stops my béchamel or mash being nice and white, black pepper is marvellous. I love the smell of it.

Pasta with black pepper and cheese, cream of tomato soup - heck, any creamy soup, eggs of any kind, most sauces, spuds… black pepper is queen.

As for cooking without garlic or onions - those are offensive to Lord Krishna, the nice singing bunch with tambourines told me as they pressed a free vegan cookbook into my hand.

I knew in that moment that becoming a Hare Krishna was not for me. 😉

£5 for a decent one in Ikea, £3 odd for big jar of black peppercorns in Tesco. We couldn't live without plenty of freshly ground black pepper on just about everything. DD and DS too.
