I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

why?

I don't use it.

Do you never have guests over for dinner?

Why did you ask if YABU then? YABVU

You wouldn't be able to eat any food that is seasoned with pepper, at all? That must be extremely limiting. Most people use it in cooking and it is in a lot of pre-packaged/ prepared foods.

I check the ingredients list, it's just second nature. And I make sure to tell restaurants when I'm ordering. Family keep it in the house and just add it at the table if they want, or tell me what dishes it's in so I avoid them.

If I were eating at someone's house and they had added pepper, I would force myself to eat it for the sake of the relationship and politeness. I'm not allergic to it, I just wouldn't taste anything but pepper for some time afterwards.

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

I use it every day

Turophilic · 31/07/2024 18:15

Pepper in a cheap supermarket grinder is under £2 - a small price to pay for someone cooking for you! And everyone who stays at your house and wants food

ClydeBank · 31/07/2024 18:15

OP - You need to ask mumsnet to move this thread to ‘attention seeking’ section of the site

For white sauces like bechamel, mashed potatoes and Chinese food. If you like to cook it would be weird not to have white pepper.

chattyness · 31/07/2024 18:16

I can't stand pepper, my DH only likes black so I buy that for him .

DilemmaDelilah · 31/07/2024 18:17

I hate pepper. If it wasn't for my DH I wouldn't have it in the house.

Devilsmommy · 31/07/2024 18:18

yeesh · 31/07/2024 17:48

Black pepper goes in everything surely? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t have it

I don't have black pepper at all as it burns my tongue so it's never been brought in my house. Obviously don't own a pepper grinder either. Am I adulting wrong 🤣

rainbowunicorn · 31/07/2024 18:18

onwardandupwards · 31/07/2024 17:53

We don't have pepper either, no one likes it. We don't even have any herbs or spices at all. Garlic salt is as good as it gets 😂

How do you cook, its not possible to make most recipes without using any herbs or spices?

quietdays · 31/07/2024 18:19

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 18:11

And we really don’t care. It’s a bit rude to your relative, but you do you.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 31/07/2024 18:20

Knock on the neighbours door when they start cooking and ask if they'd mind giving you a quick grind? So to speak 😂

Send one of the teens to do it as revenge for being a pain in the ass

TheBizzies · 31/07/2024 18:20

Don't know why you bothered asking then

CoolSummerDays · 31/07/2024 18:21

YANBU. I wouldn't have pepper if my husband didn't love it. I don't add it to any food, he can his after it's cooked. My stomach doesn't like it - I know I can handle a small quantity but never quite know where the limit is, so avoid it as much as possible after a very embarrassing incident at someone's house!

Agreed. My tastebuds are dying at the thought! To be missing out on such a lot of varied, deep and accent flavours!

wippandzipp · 31/07/2024 18:23

Interested to know what they are making and what alternative spices you'd use if you were cooking it? I don't particularly like black pepper myself.

maras2 · 31/07/2024 18:23

Weirdo.

LittleYellowCloth · 31/07/2024 18:23

OP, in essence, you are asking “someone is going to do me a very kind favour which saves me a job. AIBU to be rude enough not to make a contribution to that favour which will only cost me £2?”

Your meals must be very bland. Do you never go out for an Italian, a curry, a Thai, a Chinese or get a takeaway?

I love freshly ground black pepper. It has lots of flavour without much heat.

My mum didn't like it so I never got to taste it until I was an adult. As a result my sister and I use it liberally on food. A steak au poivre is delicious.

We use it a lot too. There are some things that have to be white pepper!

Mashed potato, cauliflower cheese, all over a roast dinner, tomato soup and a full English.

RampantIvy · 31/07/2024 18:25

In answer to @bluecomputerscreen YABVU, sorry.

YANBU. Every house is different. You’ll never find sugar and onions in my house. It’s just not something we use. Even if it’s 1p I wouldn’t buy them as I don’t need them.

What do you cook? Literally 90% of recipes usually start with onion. I don't know how its possible to cook without them.

I use white pepper loads, especially in Chinese cooking. Also have a very large pepper grinder which is in use constantly.

And fried potatoes.
