I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

Get some and just give it to your guest. I'm not seeing the issue here .

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:53

if I buy some now ift will only gather dust until I have the next clear out.

We don't have pepper either, no one likes it. We don't even have any herbs or spices at all. Garlic salt is as good as it gets 😂

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:54

a meal for 10 uses what, a teaspoon worth?

if I want heat I use other spices.

It's not just about heat though?

It's seems so blooming weird to not have something so common especially if you have lots of other spices and then refuse to buy it just because you don't use it. Your guest is cooking for you, why wouldn't you provide them with such a cheap ingredient it's hardly extravagant or expensive.

No actual garlic?

Fink · 31/07/2024 17:55

I absolutely hate pepper, it ruins the taste of everything it touches so that all I can taste is the burn of pepper. I don't get how people can treat it like salt - something that you can add to a dish to bring out its own flavour - all pepper does is bludgeon every other flavour into submission so that I can barely taste it under the pepper.

So, if it were me, I wouldn't be buying a pepper mill, however cheap, because I wouldn't then be able to eat the food.

It doesn't seem as though you can't eat it, though, you mention having had some in the cupboard in the past. So maybe you'll find it's ok if your relative finds some and puts it in. Still wouldn't buy it specially though.

What do you use if you want pepperiness?

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

White pepper is fantastic in mashed potatoes and I prefer it in scrambled eggs too.

YANBU. Every house is different. You’ll never find sugar and onions in my house. It’s just not something we use. Even if it’s 1p I wouldn’t buy them as I don’t need them.

I don't use sugar, but I still keep it in for visitors. If someone ever invites anyone over for a meal, then it would be standard to have salt and pepper.

Hankunamatata · 31/07/2024 17:58

Love ground pepper. I use it more than salt yabu

Peppercorns in a grinder will last ages.

None, everyone except me is autistic and live off of fruit and their ' safe foods' so mountains of pasta but not a single herb, spice or bit of pepper to be found!

Riapia · 31/07/2024 18:04

I don’t smoke, I have ashtrays for those that do.

White pepper is lovely with veggies, you’re missing out.

DH thought the same as you but raves about my mashed potatoes, bubble and squeak etc - it’s because I add white pepper.

He's a convert now.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:47

why?

I don't use it.

Because it's cheap and you have a guest coming who has offered to cook for you and needs pepper.

Just let your relative take it away when they're done if you don't use it.

Moier · 31/07/2024 18:07

I have a pepper mill .. it came as a duo with my salt grinder.
I've filled the salt grinder up lots.. the pepper mill hasn't been used once. Looks pretty though with the colourful pepper in.. not everyone likes / uses pepper.
I don't.

You wouldn't be able to eat any food that is seasoned with pepper, at all? That must be extremely limiting. Most people use it in cooking and it is in a lot of pre-packaged/ prepared foods.

I agree with the above. Sounds like you just want to be obstructive for no reason. If the relative needs pepper for the recipe just get some.

I had a set like that. I still had 2/3 of a mill of pink salt when the rainbow pepper ran out!

This is why you should buy some pepper.

To not to do just makes you an arse.

It's not a hill worth dying on.

You sound like hard work and very petty, it's pepper not caviar. If I were the relative I wouldn't be cooking for you with an attitude like that.
