I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

You are being very tight fisted, you guest obviously wants it.

BigLicks · 01/08/2024 23:41

I use white pepper ...hate the smell but love the taste.
Absolutely love black pepper on most things though from sandwiches to pastas..the crunchier the better here.

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

I have. Peppercorns both black and white in my store cupboard

StarlightLady · 02/08/2024 04:20

A small glass disposable pepper mill in the supermarket costs a fee pounds. As far as l’m aware, pepper does not go off.

I don’t take sugar or add salt to food/cooking but l keep some in the house for those that do.

I cook the same way, and I don’t really like pepper. I do have it for guests though because my father loves it.

Here's my list:
chilli, turmeric, coriander, cummin, paprika, harissa, mustard (occasionally - more likely on the side), garlic, capers, small gerkins, pepper and salt.
I use other things, too, of course. Depends what I am cooking. Most recipes mandate 'season to taste', which means adding salt and pepper to the amount you like (or not, ofcourse).

rookiemere · 02/08/2024 08:42

We don't use sugar in hot drinks and don't bake so it's not something we have a need for, but it's something that regular visitors use so we make sure we have it in, ditto instant coffee ( although it's a few years old).

It's hardly a big deal to have pepper in your house so just spend the pound to get some.

It's not like my US visitors who seemed shocked to the core that we didn't have orange juice in the fridge ( they didn't ask for it in advance and I'm not a fan of the concentrated sugar in fruit juices) or the ingredients to whip up a salad dressing ( had planned to put mayonnaise on the table).

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/08/2024 08:52

Were I the OP (and had the OP's attitude to pepper), I would still spend a few quid on black pepper as a flavour favour to the person cooking for me.
We do use a lot of black pepper though (shown next to the cat for scale purposes only 😁)

I was wondering about the stair bannister on the table Grin

I use white pepper all the time (usually in gravy’s, casseroles, etc). I use black pepper when it’s more or a seasoning (eg wedges, steak).

gotmyknickersinatwist · 02/08/2024 10:05

LittleYellowCloth · 31/07/2024 17:49

I use white pepper regularly, in Chinese dishes, and in things like white sauce where black specks would spoil the look of the finished dish. It’s stronger than black pepper.

I use it a lot. It lifts mash & champ to a new level.

betterangels · 02/08/2024 10:07

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:47

why?

I don't use it.

Maybe guests would want pepper on their food?

A significant number of mumsnetters never let anyone other than the residents of the household over the doorstep. That is even if they answer the door.

To be fair, if the OP doesn't even like pepper why would the friend who is cooking for her want to use it?

Sgtmajormummy · 02/08/2024 10:22

I heard on TV that “salt enhances the flavours but pepper improves them”.
I can certainly advise it for anything chickpea or lentil based. Those pepper canisters with grinder lids are cheap and good for visitors. Why wouldn’t you?
You’ve also inspired me to buy some white pepper which I haven’t used since I left home!

I don't see why the OP should buy an ingredient that she never uses just because someone else is cooking. I don't use salt in anything and haven't bought any in more years than I can remember. I don't think I've got any sugar either. I wouldn't buy salt and sugar just because someone else was cooking for me.

Can you please post that you don't have a television too so I can fill up this bingo card 🙏🏼

I use both, white pepper is good for things like homemade mayonnaise and Chinese food for example.

Just buy the pepper. Is this really a thing to worry about? Especially if you have guests then in my opinion you should make them feel welcome and spend 40p on the pepper they have asked for.

Is there a reason why you have all the spices, herbs etc but, draw the line at pepper?

Bellaboo01 · 02/08/2024 10:58

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:47

why?

I don't use it.

Why is it about you and if you use it or not.

If you can't afford to buy some pepper then just say to them that they will need to pick up pepper.

They are probably assuming that most people have salt and pepper in their cupboards.

White pepper too. Hotter and a must with cheese on toast, sprouts etc.

Aibu definitely

I could live without salt but not pepper

This is unfortunately not true: without salt, human beings die. Slowly.

Almostneverunreasonable · 02/08/2024 12:40

YABU. I keep granulated sugar in in case anyone visiting likes sugar in their tea. Literally never use it myself. No difference here. You don’t seem very hospitable.

spikeandbuffy · 02/08/2024 13:54

Thanks to this thread I did a cheese savoury sandwich for lunch with white pepper. Definitely recommend!

This grinder reminds me of a Victoria Wood sketch.

Baffled that someone would never use black pepper in cooking.
