I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

I am equally baffled by all the people who assume that because they like something, anyone who doesn't happen to like it is Wrong. I find this a very strange attitude.

Arrivapercy · 02/08/2024 14:16

I don't use pepper either, just don't love it.

I keep a box of pepper corns and a grinder for guests tho. I ignore sell by dates, dried pepper corns keep for years.

I’m going to guess it’s the in laws staying 🤔

It’s not a question of right or wrong. It’s very basic level hospitality.

Read the thread. Blame blame blame: what a weirdo not to have the right sort of pepper to offer what a skinflint steal some from a café if you can't afford it oh I can't imagine how people manage to live without pepper and on and on and on. Clearly the OP is being deemed to be wrong for not having pepper available at all times even if she does not use it herself.

This is unfortunately not true: without salt, human beings die. Slowly.

Fighting. need. to. be. pedantic....

That's about the size of it, yes.

after <counts> 5 days of home invasion I'm no longer hospitable...

brought home a few pepper sachets from a coffee shop. guest happy. and I will just thank guest politely for their efforts at dinner.

Gosh, how magnanimous of you.

Some one else mentioned white pepper being seen as less posh than black. I think you're both right. I recall ground white pepper being used by my middle class, but not very worldly grandmother, but my far more cosmopolitan mother used black pepper.

I suspect black pepper and peppercorns became a thing the same way and at the time olive oil started to be used generally for cooking , rather than unblocking ears.

White pepper probably got the heave ho by the Elizabeth David generation as being too parochial, too British but it's made a comeback.

I can't imagine not having black or white pepper in the house or making just about anything savoury without onions.

I use both, but white peppermill is used for sauces when I want a smooth white finish to the dish.

Barney60 · 03/08/2024 08:30

I do not have a pepper mill, i can not have black pepper, i use white only.

RuthW · 03/08/2024 08:34

I have never had pepper in my house and I'm 56.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 03/08/2024 16:47

After reading this thread, I’m definitely going to try white pepper next time I make mash or fried rice!

T1Dmama · 03/08/2024 20:27

I don’t have pepper, salt or sugar in the house 🤷🏻‍♀️

Inkyblue123 · 03/08/2024 20:42

Nah I wouldn’t bother. It’s just more waste, more plastic shite hanging around. Tell relative your on a zero waste mission and they are welcom to bring their own and take it home with them. I find the taste of pepper overwhelming

RampantIvy · 03/08/2024 20:43

I can understand someone not liking pepper, but having no salt or sugar is odd to me. We use very little sugar, but I'll add a pinch to a home made tomato sauce, and eating no salt at all sounds rather joyless.

Unless you have unconttrollable high blood pressure why would you not add a little salt to your cooking? I can't imagine making a slat free tomato sauce for pasta for example.

Same, I couldn't cook without salt or sugar
Salt to draw out moisture as well, sugar for bbq sauce or to tweak a tomato pasta sauce that's too sharp

Black pepper goes in everything surely? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t have it

I've never had pepper in the house in my life - revolting stuff, and putting it in anything while cooking ruins it for me. Why can't people just put the grinder or shaker or whatever on the table and let people put it on when they eat if they like it, instead of forcing it on everyone?

RampantIvy · 03/08/2024 21:43

I agree with you @Elsvieta
I love freshly ground black pepper on my food and agree that it doesn't need to go into food, as pepper lovers like me can add it at the table.
