Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Some banks like natwest or Ulster banks let you use an app called get cash. But yes if you lose your card, on a weekend, and don’t have a credit card, there is not much you can do

Freakinfraser · 17/03/2024 12:08

Sorry on Monday I think uou can go to a physical branch.

QforCucumber · 17/03/2024 12:09

do you have Apple pay or the android version? Setting that up shouldn’t be affected by a lost physical card for future.

It just seems ridiculous that there is absolutely no other way to access your own money.

When I was with ulster bank they had a get cash option that you could use at weekends.
Ulster Bank have closed in ireland. They are not here anymore

I had to move bank. The new bank doesn't have any getcash option

No
I'll definitely get it in future, now I realise how utterly dependant I am on a small card

Do a transfer to a friend and ask them to withdraw for you would be your best bet. Happy St Patrick's Day!

There are lots of ways, but most need to be set up in advance. It's just shit luck you need access on a bank holiday.
Try taking a photo of your passport with a different phone, or turn on more lights. Or turn off your flash, it might be washing out the photo. It shouldn't be difficult to set up revolut.

Nevermindtheteacaps · 17/03/2024 12:16

Just transfer money to a friend and have them withdraw cash?

KrisAkabusi · 17/03/2024 12:16

Just to add that the EU are bringing in a rule that all transactions have to go through within 30 seconds, so weekend closing won't be an issue soon.

Tangled123 · 17/03/2024 12:18

My account won’t charge me for going into overdraft as long as I put money in the account by 1 or 2pm on the same day. Can you check if yours is the same? I would have thought if money won’t go in, it shouldn’t come out until Tuesday either, so any transfers today should cover what you spend (as long as the transfer is for more).

TuliLily · 17/03/2024 12:21

I just realised even if I get revolut working, it won't work for me this weekend

As if I transfer money from my bank ton revolut, it won't go in until next Tuesday either.

Online bank transfers work immediately, there’s no delay due to Public Holidays etc. You can transfer ££ to a friend and ask them to withdraw it..?

HouseholdBores · 17/03/2024 12:22

Do you have PayPal? Can you do it through there?

Even at the weekend?

When I go into my bank app to transfer money, it says "money transferred at the weekend will not be processed until the next working day"

Do you not have faster payments in Ireland? Transfers go through within 2 hours although usually instant.

I agree it's crackers you can't get access to your own money!

Edited

Yes always been instantly even weekends

dementedpixie · 17/03/2024 12:25

If they have the faster payments system then the money should transfer straight away but will have the next working days date on it.

HouseholdBores · 17/03/2024 12:25

If this was me I would probably deposit however much I needed into an online bingo site paying with PayPal. Then I'd straight away withdraw the money from the bingo site back to PayPal so it was now in my PayPal account. Then I would withdraw it from PayPal to my other bank account. PayPal transfers tend to be almost instant.

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:26

TuliLily · 17/03/2024 12:25

I'm glad that happens for you.

Bit it's definitely not every bank
