Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

"It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday."

I presume you are in Northern Ireland, as the posts mentioning £ have not been corrected to euros?

This is a strange one. I often get told that the money will be through in 24 hours. But it does go instantly. At the most, two hours. Is it worth you trying? They money just might be through instantly. I have done this on Sundays.

The British £ system is instant, but euros in SEPA seem to take up to 4 hours.

As to Revolut not accepting your passport photo... sometimes these apps use "one size fits all" and they ask for two pictures (meaning your ID card, as if you were in Europe). I once just sent the same photo twice and it was accepted this way! If the photo is being rejected it may be because a light is shining on the actual data that they are trying to read. Try to make sure that alone is clear and hang everything else! Good luck!! xxx

I'm in the Republic of Ireland.

Thanks for the last bit

As I said I do have two bank accounts with cards attached.

The problem was that I couldn't transfer money from one to the other!

Cards and accounts are not the easiest option.

I'm going to make sure I have Google pay in future. I wasn't using it before
I will now

Apologies. Clarification: 2 accounts with cash in them that don't require you to transfer was my point. In case a banking system ever goes down

Have you checked out Wise?

@Sashamalia I'm glad you're sorted now. Well done on keeping your cool on this thread. It amazes me how poor some posters' comprehension skills are!

Thanks!

I can understand people at the start assuming I was in UK, as mumsnet is a UK website

But I did say then that i was in the ROI about 8 times.

And people still talked about banks that are only in the UK

Ah well , their intention was to try to help

I use Starling rather than Revolut. It works basically the same way. Maybe try opening an account with them.
I know you are sorted for now, and it wouldn't have helped anyway as there is no way of putting money into it this weekend; but for the future.

I am pleased that you have managed to sort something. Situations like this are so so stressful. (Even more so when you are repeatedly getting the same advice over and over which doesn't apply in your situation)

Beautiful3 · 17/03/2024 14:49

This happened to me before, I always make sure I have a stash of emergency in the house.

LakieLady · 17/03/2024 14:49

Thisilldo · 17/03/2024 13:11

There is no such thing as Faster Payments in ROI.

Its a UK thing. The EU are getting around to it apparently.

I had no idea that this was the case. I have a Santander account, and they do them. I wonder if they only do them in the UK, or if they're an exception in Europe?

I'm paranoid about being unable to access funds. I have 2 bank accounts with different banks, I still have a cheque book and I always keep a stash of cash in the house just in case the banking system has issues. Not loads, but enough to get petrol and essentials for a couple of days if necessary.

My late DP thought I was quite mad until the Natwest system was down for quite a while a few years ago!

Bichonmum · 17/03/2024 14:51

I'd just be careful of having a photo of your phone as a back up option. If your card gets lost and has to be cancelled then your existing card details may change (card number maybe the came but valid from / to dates may differ) x

SabreIsMyFave · 17/03/2024 14:53

There's a lesson to be learnt here @Sashamalia Keep some cash in your home. Just £100 even. I do, always, as I have been caught out like this too. Sometimes at checkouts my card fails. Sometimes it's my fault, (not enough in current account,) sometimes it's the shop, sometimes it's the bank... (So I keep £50-75 in my purse at all times.)

As has been said, what are you expecting anyone on here to do?

What are you expecting the bank to do?

PearTreeBoat · 17/03/2024 14:54

Have you tried doing a transfer. My old bank used to give a message saying transfers may not be credited until the next business day but they always went through within an hour or so.

Don't think I know of any banks that don't do instant transfers now even on weekends.

I did have emergency cash kept at home.

It didn't help me at all. As you can't use cash for everything.

I needed to pay for something online. It could only be paid for with card,
not cash

How I eventually resolved it was I got a family member to pay for it with her card.

And I transferred her money from my bank account.

I told her that the money won't be in her account until Tuesday next week
. She is OK with that

Transfers don't go through on weekends.

They go through on the next business day.

What bank is this? I can transfer money online at any time and its always pretty much instant.

What you're saying doesn't sound right to me at all.

I am glad to read your issue has been resolved for now. I am sure you will be having a plan B for any future bank holidays and never losing your bank card again.

If this was me I would probably deposit however much I needed into an online bingo site paying with PayPal. Then I'd straight away withdraw the money from the bingo site back to PayPal so it was now in my PayPal account. Then I would withdraw it from PayPal to my other bank account. PayPal transfers tend to be almost instant.

You would only need to open a PayPal account. You can add money directly into your PayPal wallet. Bingo need not be involved.

moonbeammagic · 17/03/2024 15:10

Mine are instant too, even at weekends - HSBC and Co-operative. I thought that was standard now.

Judellie · 17/03/2024 15:13

Quite surprised that the UK has a better banking system than the ROI/EU.
We never seem to hear about or appreciate the good things we have here.
Glad you are sorted OP.

I think this is a 'your specific bank' issue rather than a general issue.
I have accounts with 4 different uk banks and they all do instant transfer, even on the weekend.
although for some reason nationwide doesn't process standing orders.
All seems very weird to me, I mean presumably there isn't someone with a clipboard standing there checking every single transfer who goes home at 5pm on Friday, so don't understand how banks who don't offer instant transfer justify it.

For the benefit of non Irish posters….

You pay QUARTERLY FEES on all Irish bank accounts. Most Irish residents won’t bother having accounts at more than one bank other than a Credit Union.

IRISH banks don’t do weekend or bank holiday transfers.

Brexit fucked everything up for us Brits living in Ireland. I lost my U.K. bank credit card because of that stupid vote. You can’t open a U.K. bank account without a permanent address in the U.K.

Are you surprised? That's interesting.

I know from experience that UK runs various things a lot more efficiently than ROI

Mainly due to size. The UK is a bigger country than ROI.

So it just has more infrastructure and organisations in place.

Also the UK was a richer country for longer than the ROI.

Ireland is definitely a bit behind the UK in a lot of things. But it is a small country.

Ireland is also newly wealthy, from EU money. So they haven't really had time to improve a lot of the old systems in Ireland yet.

Bank of ireland charge me 6 euro a month just to have a bank account.

That's cool, if uk banks don't do that

I am glad it has been sorted. It is always wise to keep 100 in euros in the house just in case.
Also be aware Revelut is not signed up to various bank protection schemes. I would avoid it.
