Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

I'm with Bank of aireland and Revolut. When I transfer cash from BofI to Revolut it's instant.

I can't remember if I could use my Revolut as soon as I set it up or did I have to wait for the physical card though.

I'm gonna try get revolut set up again.

Do you have a Drivers Licence? It might be easier to get a clear picture of that rather than passport.

Therealjudgejudy · 17/03/2024 12:46

I'm in Ireland and have accounts with AIB and PTSB. Same bank to bank do transfer straight away.I know that if I transfer from one of my accounts to the other (different bank) it does take 1 working day to go through.

Also, no payments go through on bank Holidays which is annoying. Irish banks need to sort this out.

Mrsttcno1 · 17/03/2024 12:47

I have to say OP I think this must be a very niche problem pretty much specific to only your bank. Between my husband and I we have a few different bank accounts and absolutely all of them do instant transfers regardless of weekends or bank holidays it is literally a matter of seconds to transfer money. Definitely worth you changing banks, even Monzo or Revolut is instant

user1492757084 · 17/03/2024 12:47

In my experience a bank transfer does go through instantly but only if you have sent money to that account/person previously.
Have you transferred money to the new account before? Could you try transferring a little to a friend who you have previously sent money? If it works send them more, and ask them to withdraw the cash?

Use your cheque book.
Borrow from someone and pay them back next Tuesday.

I'm not in the UK. The banks are different in ireland.

It takes one working day to process most transfers here

Banking in Ireland doesn't prioritise the convenience of it's customers in my experience. I really like Revolut for this reason, so convenient.

It's not exactly a niche problem when it's the same for everyone in ireland.

It takes one working day to transfer to another account.

When i used to be a with a different bank in ireland, they were the same. They didn't do any transfers at all at weekends.

They only went through on a working day

Thanks so much

I've taken photos over and over of my passport and drivers licence.

It's with a new phone. The picture is super clear.

Revolut still keeps saying "your I.d. is not clear enough'

Sigh

I'm going to have to try to borrow money off someone. I hate borrowing money

The OP is correct in that transfers in Irish banks don't happen on weekends and bank holidays.

Also, most Brits are unaware that banking in Ireland isn't FREE.

In Ireland, people have to pay quarterly fees for a standard current account. That's why I use a German online bank account because it gives me free banking. Unfortunately, I'm waiting for some transfers to come into it via Irish banks so I'm stuck with less than a euro in my account till Tuesday as lots of stuff went out before the weekend.

Thankfully, I always keep have a couple of hundred in cash lying around at home for emergencies.

Madcats · 17/03/2024 12:58

It is most definitely worth having multiple bank accounts.

FWIW, HSBC and Barclays both do/accept instant transfers.

I'm pretty certain DH's Nationwide acct does instant payments too.

HSBC, Nationwide and Barclays do not have any bank branches in the Republic of Ireland.

Yeah bank holiday weekends are a pain. You can't sort out anything until Tuesday.

Can you borrow cash from a friend or family member?

Revolut, Monzo, Chase ? Just a few examples of banks that do transfers within a few seconds surely would work if you had them set up?

In terms of the bigger picture it is a niche problem in the sense that most banks- as you can see from the replies- do same day instant transfers.

isthewashingdryyet · 17/03/2024 13:04

I have three current accounts with different banks, payment on my phone, PayPal and a credit card, and I still keep cash in the house, enough for a full tank of petrol and a full food shop.

banking systems can and do go down, and so do shop systems . I think Sainsburys were unable to accept phone payments late last week.

i know not everyone has enough money to keep a load in the house, but it really does make sense in case of cyber malfunctions.

hope you get sorted OP

Most banks in what country though.

It's different in every country

I don't think most banks in ireland do weekend transfers. So I can't just choose to change to another bank. If I would I could.

Thanks though

About revolut

I've tried to set it up for two days now.

Agh.
It keeps saying that the photo of my passport /drivers licence is not clear enough.

My mobile phone is new. My camera on the phone is good. The photo is really clear. you can read every number

I've taken about 15 photos now.

Revolut refuses to accept any of the photos. I tried with another phone. Still won't accept any photos. Technology!!

I know that you have only the three physical banks in Ireland but can you set up an online account with a “British “ bank (obviously afterwards)

Thisilldo · 17/03/2024 13:11

There is no such thing as Faster Payments in ROI.

Its a UK thing. The EU are getting around to it apparently.

Bjorkdidit · 17/03/2024 13:16

Is Starling, Monzo, Chase or Kroo available in Ireland OP? Similar to Revolut, but might be better at checking your ID - my phone is nothing special, but I've set up Starling fine.

But 'just use faster payments' is starting to get a bit 'cancel the cheque'. Maybe that would solve your issues if cheques are still a thing in Ireland - write a friend or family member a cheque for X euro and they give you the money now, and they get paid back when they bank the cheque.

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 17/03/2024 13:17

@Sashamalia sorry to hear about your bank problems. It sounds so frustrating for you!

I’m sure you’ve done this, but check that your phone camera doesn’t have any dirt on the lens when you try to photograph your passport. (I know I’m clutching at straws)

Bridie1980 · 17/03/2024 13:20

I'm a BOI customer and if I transfer to another BOI customer over weekend it appears in their account immediately. Test €1 with a friend and see if it works and you'll know for certain.

Scarletttulips · 17/03/2024 13:20

Resolute don’t accept Irish driving licenses - but they do passports if they are in date.

They then do background checks which take a few days - you don’t get instance access.
