Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

My bank card was cancelled a while ago and a new one issued instantly for me.
I could see my new card in my app immediately, so could use the details for online shopping before I got the card in the post.
Also added it to Apple Wallet so could use my phone to pay whilst out.
So I wasn't without access to my money at any time.

Transfers don't go through on weekends.

They go through on the next business day.

Really virtually all my transfers are almost instant now, even payments between my bank and credit card. Does it not work nasal efficiently in Irland?

Bridie1980 · 17/03/2024 14:07

It does work efficiently in Ireland! OP just doesn't want to be wrong

Youre actually the one that is completely wrong bridie.

Are you with bank of ireland?

Go into their mobile app. It says in their own words that "they do not process payments to non boi accounts at the weekend."

Not just this weekend. They do not process payments to non boi accounts at weekends. Ever.

It says it there in their own words, on their mobile banking app!

If you look at my original post I never mentioned other banks I said to another BOI account and I shared the post from the app today. You asked for information and were given loads, if you'd read the post of the app correctly you wouldn't have wasted everyone else's time

Bridie1980 · 17/03/2024 14:01

Upcoming delay - SEPA payments to non-BoI payees on Friday 15 March 2024

If you make payments after 2.30pm on Friday 15 March
After this cut-off point, payments made within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) to non-Bank of Ireland payees will not arrive in their accounts before Monday 18 March. In other words, those non-BoI customers will not have access to their funds on Friday 15 March or over the weekend.
Payments to Bank of Ireland payees are not affected.

As per my original post there is no issue transferring from one BOI customer to another.I think the OP just wanted to have a moan and blame the bank!

You're saying thqr there is no issue transferring from one BOI account to another

I never needed to transfer from one BOI account to another BOI account did I?

I needed to transfer from my boi account to another bank account in a different bank

Bank of ireland will not do this transfer at weekends.

The UK posters on this thread have said that they can transfer from one bank to another bank, instantly at the weekend.

I needed to transfer from boi to another bank.

So your posts don't make any sense. It means that you just didn't bother to read

I have online banking and transfers have always been instant?

That's my understanding to, I was able to show the mobile mechanic that the payment had gone through before he'd loaded his van on Friday!

Or in future keep a little cash in case of emergency.

Not in the republic of Ireland
Different country . Different banks

OP - is right, I have a BOI credit card, and an An Post bank account, and neither manage instant transfers - always takes at least a day (An Post to my BOI credit card generally 2-3 to get credited)

sometimes my Revolut -> An Post or An Post -> Revolut is credited same day, but often it isn't.

Faster Payments just aren't the same over here.

So it's just bad luck that you've lost a card the same weekend that BoI are doing something major system wise and all transfers are delayed. If you hate borrowing money and hate credit cards then this is probably your useful lesson to have 2x bank accounts with cards attached. One for emergency purposes. A credit card could be used as emergency too (and put away for the rest of the time).
If your relative has a BoI account then you could transfer and pay them back immediately it would seem

AppropriateAdult · 17/03/2024 14:20

I do think this problem may be specific to this weekend, @Sashamalia - I got the message below in my AIB app. I don't think BOI is generally slower than other Irish banks. Glad you've got sorted now.

PlumbersWifey · 17/03/2024 14:21

It says that but usually goes through quicker. I went in branch to pay in money yesterday and it said next working day but took just 14 minutes to appear in my account.

CleftChin · 17/03/2024 14:22

Oh! When i thought I'd lost my BOI credit card and requested a new one, to my surprise they gave me an absolutely identical one, rather than a new number - I'm guessing you don't remember your CVV though from the old card, so that doesn't really help, you won't be able to get it set up - or that they're issuing a brand new card number too.

Hi @AppropriateAdult no it's not specific to this weekend.

I've checked boi mobile banking

They will not do any transfers to non BOI accounts at the weekend. Any weekend.

Not just this weekend.
Any weekend

So If you send money on Saturday to a non boi account. It will never get there until Monday.

It's written on their payments section on ther mobile banking app

I'm glad that happens for you.

Bit it's definitely not every bank

Sounds like the answer is to move to one of the many banks that offer "fast payments" to avoid this weekend problem you have with yours.

As I said I do have two bank accounts with cards attached.

The problem was that I couldn't transfer money from one to the other!

Cards and accounts are not the easiest option.

I'm going to make sure I have Google pay in future. I wasn't using it before
I will now

An Irish poster above wrote that "no irish banks have the fast payments scheme"

She said that the EU haven't implemented it yet.

Sorry really frustrating. Especially when people don't believe you or understand how it works here 😅 I know even Revolut won't transfer into bank account over the weekend here, it only comes through next working day. Unless transferring to different account with same bank.

Just looking up and it says you can set up google/apple pay via your BOI app. Though I'm with PTSB so can't check. Also if you have your card details saved anywhere on your phone you could use the number to setup on your phone, maybe already been suggested sorry I didn't read through everything.

If this was me I would probably deposit however much I needed into an online bingo site paying with PayPal. Then I'd straight away withdraw the money from the bingo site back to PayPal so it was now in my PayPal account. Then I would withdraw it from PayPal to my other bank account. PayPal transfers tend to be almost instant.

And this is how to get flagged up for money laundering.

In my personal opinion, Ireland is called Europe's tech hub, because it has the european headquarters of Google and Facebook here.

They come to Ireland for the great corporation tax rates.

So Ireland is good for the tech companies: its good for Google and Facebook

This does not mean that ireland is putting excellent technology into its services for the irish PEOPLE.

Alot of technological services seem to be subpar and old fashioned
