Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

I know this has been sorted now but, because I am a BOI customer, I was intrigued as I had never noticed this as an issue before.

So in the interest of research, last night around 11pm, I transferred money to my revolut account (money appeared instantly), my husband's AIB account (took about 10 minutes), and to our EBS account (joint and tied to our mortgage, and certainly not known as being with a progressive bank/building society).

This time the money had not appeared by 11.30 so I left it. But was there by 9.15 this morning when I checked again.

The transaction date, however, shows as the 19th, which is the same as the grocery shopping I did in lidl on Saturday the 16th. Perhaps this is what BOI mean in their ts&cs.

I believe, having read up a bit about it last night off the back of this thread, that the sepa updates this weekend will ensure an instant /10 second transfer time across all sepa banks /countries, so it should get even better, but I don't think those processing times are too bad.

Transfers won't go through until next Tuesday

Monzo bank transfers go through immediately, I've never had a payment, I've made to someone, go through later.

I have online banking and transfers have always been instant?

Varies bank to bank. I have 4 different banks I regularly use on line. 2 are usually immediate, 1 is sometimes immediate and the other is usually there within 12 hours. Blinking pain sometimes, but one reason I have 4 different banks is to limit tech issues causing problems.

celticprincess · 18/03/2024 21:44

On all my accounts standing orders won’t go through on a weekend or bank holiday however if I go online and make a transfer on a weekend it does go through instantly.

I'm glad that happens for you.

Bit it's definitely not every bank

It is every bank in 2024 other than yours. I’m pretty sure if you transfer funds they will go into your friends account.

what bank are you with? I know that RBS, Barclays, Nationwide, Virgin, Mondo & BoS would all send it straight away though it may not be fully administrated until the next working day.

Read their posts says bank of Ireland in Ireland

peakygold · 19/03/2024 08:26

We always pay in cash when out shopping and keep cash on us/in the house. I cannot understand why other don't.

I did, I also read all the other posts that think it would go through too. I think she should try transferring a very small amount to see if it works as there is a high chance it will.

if you read them you would have seen that for irish banks this weekend sepa payments were down for maintenance- any transfers including same banks wouldn't go through till Tuesday it was also Bank holiday in Ireland
irish banks operate differently and the ops bank bank of Ireland is the worst one we have. we only have like 3 or 4 banks to choose from
also you would have seen op was sorted

Seriously, after op has said she’s sorted she has posted another three pages of comments responding to people saying every single suggestion is impossible for her.

  • she had cash in the house, she could have given it to a friend to make the purchase for her
  • she could have borrowed from a friend if she genuinely knew there was no other option for her & not bothered getting hundreds of people to try to help her find a solution
  • she could have found a friend with a boi account so she could transfer funds to them instantly.

she was not without easy options.

I have also been in RoI, with Irish residents that have sent me money by transfer in the evening on the weekend during a bank holiday. That along with the many Irish posters saying they can also do this makes me think there are other solutions.

anyway, the op is already going on and in and on about how everyone is wrong, the thread doesn’t really need you to be doing the same. The thread doesn’t need to exist tbh.

Gardengirl108 · 19/03/2024 11:47

Online transfers are instant with my banks (TSB and Chase) - even on bank holidays and weekends. Maybe think about exploring other bank options for yourself?

Whoopdie do for you!
OP doesn't have much choice of banks in Ireland

CatMum000 · 19/03/2024 13:14

when this happened to me the replacement card was in the post but the new card details were in the app so I could use them to pay by phone link to Google wallet etc. Worth checking.

You’re a bit rude. There are 16 banks in Ireland, I’m sure she’ll find one that suits.

DH has family in Ireland. Transfers from us to them are instant. They are with Barclays Ireland.

As follows
Barcelys Ireland - private bank- used for investment banking etc
Bank of Montreal - International banking - focuses on cooperate customers
Citi Bank - Investment banking and wealth funding
Dell Banking - Leasing and financing only
Eleavon Finacial services - is a card and payment processes services
Hewlett Packard international bank - provides lease loans etc to commercial
Intesaa Sanpaolo- international bank - only has an office here in Ireland
Macquarie Bank Europe - Global Financial services
Scotiabank - Global Whole sale bank
Wells Fargo Bank International - International Banking
KBC -This has exited the Irish market - Wikipedia needs to be updated

These are not really for use in day to day banking for the majority people of ireland
Leaves these
EBS, AIB, PTSB and BOI
EBS ( this is a subsidiary of AIB) was used mostly for mortgages and not many people would have their current account until recently especially with the exit of Ulster bank etc
Recently an post and the credit union have come into paly for current accounts
Most of the people though have accounts with either AIB and BOI- your standard current account - especially as there would have been until recently a branch of each in every town in Ireland and would also had bases in schools colleges etc

Revolut and N26 has become more in use in Ireland - but majority of people use AIB, PTSB or BOI
Since 2008 we have lost 7 banks and we are now limited with what choice we have for the services we need
