Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Resolute don’t accept Irish driving licenses - but they do passports if they are in date.

They then do background checks which take a few days - you don’t get instance access.

They accepted my driving license last week as my passport was out of date

IvorTheEngineDriver · 17/03/2024 13:23

Something similar happened to me and I sorted it by going into the branch and, after explaining the situation, they gave me cash.

It's Monday being a bank holiday that's screwing you OP, I'm afraid.

I have three current accounts with different banks, payment on my phone, PayPal and a credit card, and I still keep cash in the house, enough for a full tank of petrol and a full food shop.

banking systems can and do go down, and so do shop systems . I think Sainsburys were unable to accept phone payments late last week.

i know not everyone has enough money to keep a load in the house, but it really does make sense in case of cyber malfunctions.

hope you get sorted OP

Similar here. Technology is great, but when it fucks up, it can leave you up a creek without a paddle.

I have a couple of £20s in the back of my phone case, and there is about £300 at the back of DHs sock drawer.

But this doesn't help OP.

My suggestion is to explain the situation to a good friend and see if the will lend you the money for a couple of days.

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 13:28

Thanks for the replies. I've sorted it the best I can now .

I've borrowed the money off a family member now, and told them I will pay them back later next week

I absolutely have to pay for something this weekend, Due to timing issues, it can't wait until Tuesday.

I know i could have asked a family member earlier. But I hate asking family for money. Especially as the amount I need is not that small, and my family are not rolling in money.

I felt really bad asking them

Anyway I've learned a lot of lessons from this..

  1. in future i will make sure I have money in two accounts.

  2. i will also take a photo of my bank card, so if I lose the card, I will still have all the details i need , if i need to pay for something online

Completely wrong. I used my license to set up a Revolut account and I had access and was making transfers within 20 minutes.

They don't work immediately
Not at the weekend!

It says on my bank app

"money transferred at the weekend, will not be processed until the next working day"

Edited

I think this is a 'your specific bank' issue rather than a general issue.
I have accounts with 4 different uk banks and they all do instant transfer, even on the weekend.
although for some reason nationwide doesn't process standing orders.
All seems very weird to me, I mean presumably there isn't someone with a clipboard standing there checking every single transfer who goes home at 5pm on Friday, so don't understand how banks who don't offer instant transfer justify it.

I'm not in the UK!!!

I've said it several times.

Banks in ireland don't have the same services as banks in the uk

You don’t have a credit card? Or can you not make the payment you need using a credit card?

Do you have a permitted overdraft on the second account - if so could you use that to withdraw money and then pay off the overdraft as soon as possible ?

Do you think that banks in every other country work the same as banks in the UK?

They have totally different processes.

UK banks probably have different legislation in place

They also probably have better funding and services in place, as the UK is a larger country than ROI

I don't have a credit card because i know several people who are in huge credit card debt. The interest rates are extortionate. I don't think that they are a good service.

They are really designed to get you into continual debt. In my opinion. That's why i don't have one.
They might suit some people

I’m in Ireland…. Bank transfers are instant everyday of the week. Who on earth do you bank with?

That can’t be right

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 13:48

This thread has been a little bit of an eye opener for me in seeing

that some people in the UK, seem to presume that because they have weekend transfers in their UK banks, that people in other countries MUSR have the same thing.

I keep saying that I'm not in the UK.

And people keep replying to me about what their UK bank does.

I dumped old fashioned banks and was an early user of starling bank. They are super and easy to get cash from post office if you want

Scarletttulips · 17/03/2024 13:49

Well we never know when this might happen to any of us.

I think you’d be wise to keep a small sun at home so you aren’t in this position again.

You're completely wrong!

I'm with bank of ireland

If you go into the bank of ireland mobile banking app, go to send a payment, it liiterally says word for word:

"Money sent after 2.30pm on a working day, on Saturday or on Sunday, will not be processed until the next working day".

So what are you on about?

Borrow from friend or family until you can pay them back.

There’s a big system change across all the European banks this weekend, fyi. Payments that would normally be faster are delayed for all the Irish banks. I know you borrowed money, but ring the contact Center and they might be able to do something for you. You should be able to add your card to Apple/Google pay via the app also

penjil · 17/03/2024 13:57

QforCucumber · 17/03/2024 12:09

do you have Apple pay or the android version? Setting that up shouldn’t be affected by a lost physical card for future.

But surely the card you register on Google/apple pay will be the same one that gets lost and subsequently cancelled?

DaisyHaites · 17/03/2024 13:59

I’m in the UK but have been transferring money between Halifax and Chase today without any delays.

Have you actually tried the transfer as some say that as a worst case scenario.

My other advice is to open a credit card for emergencies in future, but this won’t help now.

askmenow · 17/03/2024 14:01

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:11

No
I'll definitely get it in future, now I realise how utterly dependant I am on a small card

This is why we should NEVER allow banks and/or Governments to convince us to get rid of Cash!

The payments fiasco at Tesco and Sainsburys checkouts yesterday was a case in point.

Scenic queues outside the supermarket cashpoints trying to draw out money to pay for their groceries.
Keep a stash of cash handy at all times....

Bridie1980 · 17/03/2024 14:01

Upcoming delay - SEPA payments to non-BoI payees on Friday 15 March 2024

If you make payments after 2.30pm on Friday 15 March
After this cut-off point, payments made within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) to non-Bank of Ireland payees will not arrive in their accounts before Monday 18 March. In other words, those non-BoI customers will not have access to their funds on Friday 15 March or over the weekend.
Payments to Bank of Ireland payees are not affected.

As per my original post there is no issue transferring from one BOI customer to another.I think the OP just wanted to have a moan and blame the bank!
