Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Which bank are you with?

Picklestop · 17/03/2024 12:27

I am not really sure what you are expecting. Banks have never been physically open on a Sunday or Bank Holidays, so if you lose your one and only bank card, then there was always a potential problem looming. You get around it by having a second card of some description and pay with that.

Online bank transfers work immediately, there’s no delay due to Public Holidays etc. You can transfer ££ to a friend and ask them to withdraw it..?

I wish that was true for me. Not my bank.
My bank doesn't do transfers at the wknds.

What bank are you with?

"As if I transfer money from my bank ton revolut, it won't go in until next Tuesday either."

No, because you won't be transferring via your bank app, you'll be transferring via revolut. When you set up revolut you link it to your existing BOI account and can then make transfers instantly.

museumum · 17/03/2024 12:31

Your bank is rubbish I’m afraid (or things are different in Ireland). BACS transfers in the uk are usually instant.

IncompleteSenten · 17/03/2024 12:31

I transfer money all the time and it instantly shows and is available but when you look at your transactions and statements it shows the date being the next working day.
That's my personal experience with nationwide, HSBC, tsb and RBS.
They all say it will be processed/appear next working day etc but it still shows right away and is available.

What do you have to lose by transferring it and seeing? You can't access it until tuesday so worst case scenario you still can't access it until Tuesday 🤷

You could talk to a friend and see if they can help if you show proof you've transferred the money to them, even if it doesn't show until Tuesday you could prove it's in the system if they have the money to lend while it transfers through.

SueSheeMee · 17/03/2024 12:34

That's a shame that transfers aren't instant for you. I've just this minute transferred money from my account into DH's (different banks) and he got the notification he'd received it before I got the notification that it had sent. England here.

I already tried a transfer. That's how I know it not going through.

You mightnt have seen the whole thread

I already tried a transfer.

I have bank account 1. (No bank card).

I have bank account 2 (different bank. I have a bank card for this account.

I tried to transfer my money online from account 1 to my own account 2 in the different bank. So I could get the money out that way.

I did the transfer yesterday.

The transfer hasn't gone through

That's pretty crap, I've transferred money to a friend this morning for tickets, and she got it straight away.

Maybe once you're sorted, look to change up your systems?

Purplevioletsherbert · 17/03/2024 12:35

Have you checked your banking app to see if they’ve updated your card details to your new card? They often do this very quickly and you can see the details long before your new card arrives. You could then use these details to set up Apple Pay etc

Cockapoopoopoo · 17/03/2024 12:36

Your bank must be extremely old fashioned, I have never come across the weekend delaying transfers before, I move money between my own bank accounts all the time and it is literally instant. Have you actually tried doing the transfer? The pop up message might not always be true they're just managing expectations

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:36

Thanks for the replies guys

I'm just looking at something on my bank app. Then I'll be back

Faster payments are immediate, or 2 hours at the maximum, so the vast majority of transfers these days are really quick- even at the weekend or bank holidays. Im really surprised that you bank with someone that hasnt signed up to the faster payment service -i thought all major banks did as i dont know why anyone would bank someone without this.

Most banks also provide the new card details on the app when you order a replacement which then allows phone or online payments to be made, and apple/android pay to be set up to make in person purchases so you have access to money while waiting on the new card to come through.

Also, having one account is very risky as you have now discovered, most people have more than one account or a credit card which helps in emergencies.

Im sorry you are in a difficult position but your bank sounds terrible - what your annoyed about isnt the reality for most people these days.

Ah sorry. I didn't see that. I thought I'd read through all your posts but I must have skipped that.
How important is the Monday payment? No chance it could wait a day? Or that a friend could help out if you proved you'd transferred and it would appear the next working day? Assuming you have extra to transfer of course.

EmilyPlay · 17/03/2024 12:38

Any money I transfer is instant. . Even at the weekends.

toomuchfaff · 17/03/2024 12:39

I think you'll find the issue is that your bank doesn't doesn't offer the services you need.

I've got 2 bank accounts, partner, son, mum all have other bank accounts and all our banks do immediate transfers, all our banks have the ability to add the card to Google pay or apple pay or PayPal.

Santander, HSBC, Chase, Halifax, Barclays, Revolut all of these you would be able to transfer cash to a friend and they would get it immediately.

Think one option is find a friend who will do you a favour and lend the money if they see youve initiated the transfer that will land in their account on Monday, then vote with your feet to a better bank.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 17/03/2024 12:39

If you have a friend with a BOI account it will go through instantly I think. It’s just interbank transfers that can take longer.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 17/03/2024 12:41

Also do you need the card to set up Apple Pay? On my app it just says add card to apple wallet

VivienneDelacroix · 17/03/2024 12:41

I'm sorry OP this is incredibly frustrating for you, and then on top of that you have people repeatedly telling you to do something you know won't work!

IncompleteSenten · 17/03/2024 12:41

🤦 you said it in your first bloody post. I'm thick.

Well, I'll be crossing bank of Ireland off my banks I might use list!

Weirdaf1 · 17/03/2024 12:42

I'm with Bank of aireland and Revolut. When I transfer cash from BofI to Revolut it's instant.

I can't remember if I could use my Revolut as soon as I set it up or did I have to wait for the physical card though.

We don't have Santander, HSBC, Chase, Halifax, or Barclays in Republic of Ireland

Our three main banks are AIB, Bank of ireland and PTSB.

They probably don't have features as good as some of the UK banks, as they are smaller banks.

I must see if AIB bank do weekend transfers . They might do

Unfortunate timing OP, combination of the weekend and BH, and not having faster payments in Ireland.

Hopefully someone can lend you money, but for everyone, an illustration why it is important to have 2 working forms of payments, with different banks, one credit and one debit and preferably one that uses Visa and one Mastercard, so all bases are covered with outages etc.

Here in the UK, people are coming unstuck because Sainsbury's had a big outage and people didn't have a back up, so are complaining they can't buy food.

Unless you're literally down to your last few quid, so can't afford to have money/credit in more than one place, put some resilience in place, so you don't get caught out when things go wrong.
