To be upset that my "friend" has told me off for getting a disabled person's railcard

... because I'm not in a wheelchair and don't have trouble walking so I don't need one. Oh and apparently I've got a well paid job and she doesn't see why people should have to pay extra to subsidise me.

We went on a trip at the weekend and she saw me using the card and took the opportunity to lecture me - lots of other people on the train were clearly listening and taking it all in.

In fact as she very well knows I have epilepsy with grand mal seizures and absence seizures (effectively brief blackouts) and dyspraxia. Driving is simply not an option as there is a high chance of me killing myself or someone else. Taking the train, taxis, buses all the time is expensive and time consuming. After a seizure I'm usually quite disorientated and confused...

But according to her I should get off my arse and learn to drive

I didn't enjoy the trip and came home and cried... I thought about giving up the card but I've decided to give her up instead.. wish I could give up the epilepsy too Sad

Who needs enemies when you've got friends like that?

You are entitled to the card. Its there for people like you, who need to use public transport.

Good call. She sounds like a nasty piece of work.

Don’t cry. If I was entitled to a discount card just for having a name starting with T, I’d say, “thanks very much!” You have an actual reason.

fiftiesmum · 19/02/2024 17:43

Give her up. They wouldn't give you the Railcard if you wasn't eligible.
Many over 60's have the senior Railcard and quite a few have good jobs (and pension on top) and will quite often have a car as well (which you cannot)

weebarra · 19/02/2024 17:44

Seriously, fuck her. She's wrong on so many levels.
You know you're absolutely entitled to your rain card, well paying job or not. And she thinks you can just learn to drive? Wonder what the DVLA would say about that.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 19/02/2024 17:44

You did the right thing.
Shes clearly not a friend as she doesn’t know or care about your issues. Doesn’t matter now anyway. There are nice people out there.

LeopardsRockingham · 19/02/2024 17:44

She's an arsehole.

Use your pass as you deserve it. Going by public transport only (unless you live city centre only) is a pita..... so she can do one.

Amazing how so many people are 'jealous' of the " benefits" ha that come with a disability. But if they were incapacitated you would never hear the end of their health troubles.

CrotchetyQuaver · 19/02/2024 17:45

She wouldn't be my friend any more after that. It's horrible to say things like that in the first place and she's WRONG.

Londonrach1 · 19/02/2024 17:45

Op....it's her not you. I've a friend who did similar reasons has a free bus pass and has a car sitting on the driveway which legally she can't drive now. I know it drives her mad and so much harder than driving. Her husband can drive but wfh so car mostly unused apart from weekend. Life is unfair sometimes. You don't need this so called friend.

shellyleppard · 19/02/2024 17:46

I'm sorry op she sounds like a really horrible friend. Don't let her get you down.... remember not all disabilities are visible 🙏❤️

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/02/2024 17:46

What a horrible cow. Nobody needs friends like that and I'd be telling her quite clearly why you have come to that decision. I get this as my son has "invisible" disabilities and I've had side eye from people on more than one occasion. It's sickening. I'm sorry this happened and don't you dare give up that card! Flowers

TigerRag · 19/02/2024 17:47

You need a better friend and she needs to educate herself and keep her stupid opinions to herself.

honeyytoast · 19/02/2024 17:49

She sounds like an idiot

Popetthetreehugger · 19/02/2024 17:49

How dare she lecture you in public ! Thank god you don’t see life threw her eyes … sanctimonious cow . You made a good call , onward and upward. I can drive , but hate it . So I’m always on trains … love it . I have an old girl card …. Am I allowed that , I wonder 🤣, the next trip I go on , I’ll think of your ‘friend ‘ subsidising me and order another glass of wine at the buffet 😎🙌

AlexaPlaySomeHappyHardcore · 19/02/2024 17:51

Those cards are meant for people exactly like you OP- people who have no choice but to use expensive public transport because they have a disability or condition that limits their options.

I’m glad you’ve sacked off that sanctimonious sack of shit “friend”. But do consider learning to drive. Only so you can run her over though.

TomeTome · 19/02/2024 17:55

She’s an idiot. I’d give FREE tickets to disabled people.

Angelik · 19/02/2024 17:55

Put that person in the bin!

SushiMayo · 19/02/2024 17:56

She's a right thicko. Be done with her. Use your railcard.

Pegasusforme · 19/02/2024 17:57

She is not your friend.

the80sweregreat · 19/02/2024 17:57

I can imagine it's not a say to get any kind of disabled rail card and anyway it's none of her business at all
I'm glad your binning her off
What a cow she sounds

the80sweregreat · 19/02/2024 17:57

Easy I mean , sorry

pointythings · 19/02/2024 17:57

She's an awful person. Hang on to that card, you are entitled to it. My youngest is disabled (but visibly, uses a wheelchair) but the way the world is now still worries about being 'disabled enough' because they have a part time job and get PIP. People are horribly mean spirited sometimes.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/02/2024 17:58

You made the right decision.

This ^ she is not your friend.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/02/2024 18:00

I've got one. I have MS. It flares up occasionally. I felt a bit of a fraud getting one. But train fares are so expensive that every little helps.
